Oilsands And Acid Rain
LynnF replied to SupremeLeader's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Are you kidding me? Money is far from everything???? Tell that to the masses who have been laid off this year who are losing their homes, their cars, their ability to feed their families and keep their kids healthy. And I'm not being melodramatic - this is happening all over the place - watch the news. I am certain that money can't buy happiness but money is the catalyst and the key to being able to live life. Without it...where are you? Doesn't matter what the facts or factors are in this great oil and gas debate that keeps occurring on this board, at the very base of it is money and people's livelihoods - and that will always matter most - to most. -
Oilsands And Acid Rain

Wow....go away for a couple of days and you boys are still all in the sandbox. I typed out this huge, long reply and then deleted it. I'm done with wading into anything but a river - especially when it comes to this topic. BUT....I really feel compelled to say this. Certain people who believe that they can live and/or work in Alberta and not be affected by the boom and bust of the oil and gas industry is delusional and hypocritical and need a smack in the head with the baseball bat of reality. Case in point: I lost my job with an oilfield services company - whose work contracts in the oil and gas industry represented 45% of revenue. The other 55% was affected as well...company spiralled downwards, me and lots of others are gone. Case in point #2: my husband runs a construction company. When things fell in Alberta late last year and early this year, so did his business - oil companies aren't spending money, everything comes to a halt...just starting to recover. Case in point #3 - my son works for Tim Hortons. Up until this spring he had alot of hours and a good paycheque. Now he's barely getting 4 hours a week, if that. All across the board in terms of jobs and industries - ALL AFFECTED BY THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY. Careful what we wish for. So...in short....did anyone write any letters to anybody that matters or to anyone of influence or is the discussion merely contained to this board once again. I gotta go find that dead horse graphic now. -

See rickr's reason. I did used to be known as lynnr. But then I got married and had to change it. Clearly my creative side followed me along with my new name. At least I capitalize though -

Oh ya...knishes and latkes....Calgary needs a good Jewish food restaurant ala Toronto's Pickle Barrel. I've heard that My Marvin Deli on 4th and 22nd (is that the right name?) serves that stuff. But I've also heard it's not very good. Every time I find myself there I just go into Mercato for some pear and gorgonzola pizza and forget about the latkes. -

Don't get me wrong...I think discussion and debate is healthy - especially when it comes to this stuff and the futures of our children and grandchildren. But, seriously, this board has seen this stuff beaten to death (insert beaten dead horse graphic here please) and unless this board and the folks on it are willing to, and have the power to, take this discussion thread and somehow get major political attention by it, then it really is not productive. Anyone who is really concerned about this stuff (and we all are...just to different degrees) should write a letter to someone of influence and not debate it to death, again, with a bunch of fly fishers stuck inside because of the rain - or whatever. Kinda like the random camping issue - quit writing about it on here with no hope of resolve and write a letter. And, yes, I did....several of them. -

Ya. That's what I was tryin' to get at. Someone is gonna get banned eventually so we should just quit talking about this *hit now. We all work and/or depend on the oil patch to live. And our lives are more important than anything. And that's reality. End of discussion -

Tell me SL....in which industry do you work and what do you do? Is it any way related to the industry/companythat is causing such dire environmental damage that you've got your knickers in a twist about? I'm betting it is, directly or indirectly. So one should be careful about what one cares to care about. Either that or one should leave his job and/or the province if one cares so much. Just another dead and beaten horse on this board - just the names and places are different. -

Speaking of which - I wonder what it does take to get the maximum $300,000 fine and 6 months in jail? What would you have to do? I'd bet that has never been given out, nor ever will. So what's the point. The courts and system are the joke here. -

I be from the East too....but no worries....I won't take offense. It seems that there are alot of folks from Ontario who are as dumb as bricks - and I even know a few. But manning up? I dunno...they're just doing damage control now - apologize and seem all remorseful so that the reporters have nothing left to sensationalize and all this goes away - they know how it works. Call me a cynic. -
Gotcha now. But that ain't nothin' compared to what's out there. Shoulda taken a pic of the last permanent latrine I saw still standing after the fine folks had left - about...er....20 yards from the creek. Don't be drinking that water. This is a big issue that's been going on for years and years...and nothing surprises me anymore. Some people just think nature is their God given right to enjoy and abuse...and as long as nobody does anything about it (ie enforcement) it'll continue and get worse. Thems the facts of life.

We stored our 27 foot at Calderone Acres in Carseland. Cheapest place we could find - I think $30/month (goes by footage). Look them up www.calderoneacres.com. Call Ted - great guy.

Funny about the Shop Vac idea - Mike had the same sort of idea! The hardened foam seems to be holding and I've only seen a couple flying around so I don't think they're getting out which is good. I don't think they're honey bees...their nest is underground somewhere. They are yellow and black with a red ass end - any idea what they are? But I did go buy some oven cleaner - was cheaper than another can of Raid - so thanks for that tip!

The threats are over the top - no call for that whatsoever, but these guys are only sorry they got caught and now everyone knows who they are. There's no doubt in my mind that they're cruel and got pleasure out of what they were doing - illegal or not. I'd hate to see how they treat their family pets. I hope they get the maximum everything thrown at them. And I hope they're scared shitless - they should be. -
it would appear that Raid fly and mosquito killer seems to do the trick. Just might need a few cans - and you pretty much gotta be in the danger zone to use it LOL Hopefully the foam keeps them from coming out and kills them - but I'm not optimistic. My SIL told me her nest chewed threw foam and duct tape before they made their great escape.

Help! I have a bee's nest underground right beside my front porch. It's a bee's nest, not a wasp nest. We got some foam and have sprayed the crap out of the crack and surrounding area to try and seal it but all we've done now is seal it up and made a whole bunch of bees really mad who want to get back in. Can't even walk out the front door. Any suggestions, short of hiring an exterminator, are much appreciated. The exterminator route is a last resort. Oh...and please don't suggest what the 12 year old at Home Depot did: put on a snowsuit and whack the *hit out of the nest with a stick. So helpful.

I love the quote in this link "and they talk on video...that's unusual". You know the guy wanted to say "what a bunch of ****ing morons" LOL I'm glad they got caught....and with all the charges they're facing I'm betting there's gonna be a nice little fine or two. At any rate, their duck...er....goose is cooked. Good to see. http://www.calgarysun.com/news/canada/2009...404751-sun.html -

That's Mike's favourite....he always asks me to go and get him some. My excuse: it's not on the way. I love their corn fritters and shrimp but it pretty much stops there. -

I'm glad you mentioned El Sombrero - been looking for a good Mexican restaurant too. Boyd's has, by far, THE BEST clam chowder I have ever had in my life. I'd go there just for that. -

I didn't find it overly special. Quit going there after the whole milkshake E coli incident -
I'm sure a couple of you guys must watch this unbelievably delectable and artery-hardening show. Shouldn't watch when hungry though. Anyhoo.....Mike and I were talking about how much we wish Calgary had a place/places like the restaurants on the show. So.....if you watch the show and you know what we mean, and you know of any places in Calgary like that - throw names out at us! I'll go buy myself a mid-life crisis convertible and do my own show if I get enough suggestions!

Newly Unemployed - Looking For Work
LynnF replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I don't think the job Birchy got was because of my referral. But I know he did apply and I'm hoping my buddies there recognize what a great addition he'd make to their team And...after 2 days...I'm unemployed again. I quit...long story short, boss was an ahole. Onto something bigger and better though! -
Wow....I feel like I've been rickrolled...sorta....but not really. And no nipple comments from me.
