Yeah, you'll lose a few. I certainly experience this occasionally when fishing long tailed sculpins to cutties. Not so much with bulls. But, try to slow your hook set a tad, you may pulling too quickly and pulling the fly almost out of the mouth. There is not much difference, but a split second can make a huge difference. Maybe also slow your strip speed a bit. May lead to other outcomes. Worth a try if you haven't already.

In planning a NZ trip, I'm doing a lot of looking .... . I am not seeing any river or stream names appear, and I'm sure i'd seen this info previously, like a couple of months ago. Has GE changed something? Have I changed something unknowing/unwittingly?

I've a 7'6" 3wt Diamondback I bought years ago specially for Liv and similar water. It'll cast the entire line if needed and has landed two 20+ RB's out of the upper Highwood with no issues. If your gong to downsize one line weight is not THAT much different. Personally I've got that special 3, a 4 I never use, a load of 6's and a couple of 8's for big water and dredging with a full sink. If you main rod is a 5, I'd be looking at 3's and 7's to expand the fleet. Two line weights apart. Don

I try to keep a small loop of extra line off the reel but not played out. As you set the hook allow this to slip tru your finger. That'll delay hook set by a second or two.

I did a few nicks I got on my Hyde on the Bella Coola a few years ago. I just bought 3M marine body filler - on the guys at hyde's suggetion. The version I bought ended up pale blue in colour after it cured fully. Not sure if there is a version with a white hardener. I never did get around to the final step of polishing and painting. The blue dots were daily reminders to take a tad more care approaching shore. Since sold the boat but still see it around town - dots and all.

You will probably never tie enough flies to even come close to the cost of all the materials, tools etc you'll end up collecting. I'm pretty sure i've got at least $4-5k in tying related 'stuff'. Maybe it's 'cause I have literally thousands of flies left over from guiding/shop ownership , but I really only tie a few patterns and do a bit of experimenting. And don't think your flies will be as well tied as the store bought for a while. Knock yourself out. Have fun.

I bought a large 'fanny pack' from MEC a few years ago. gave a couple to buds who also still use them. Holds 1 or 2 water bottles, straps for a rain jacket, room for a bit of lunch, small camera, snacks and a couple fly boxes. Keeps more weight on the hips than back and shoulder too. Rather than 2 bottles I carry 1 and a small Waterworx filter system for stream water - I got as much water as I want. I also wear a mostly empty vest just for the ease of having all the tools and gizmo's in familiar places. That's for outings of more than a couple hours in changeable weather. Sunny days, on water I know, needing only one fly just the fanny pack and 'stuff' in pants and shirt pockets.

Classic wood. Alberta made. I've a Kootenay guide with a slightly shorter handle so it'll fit under the rower seat. Love it. A fresh coat of epoxy each time the bag is changed. Still looks good after over 10 years.

Tried to buy a Forester last fall. Salesman was VERY arrogant about the product. Pittance for cash incentive, no loaner vehicles -we live out of town and plan a day trip around servicing- and absolutely NO movement in price, and crap for trade in value. Oh, and we found the seats quite uncomfortable. The dealer really wanted us to buy , but was not willing to do anything to sell. Response re loaners was no, but look at the vehicle you are buying. Tried an Acura RDX as well. The dealer wanted to sell. 5x the cash incentive, $1500 better for trade, loaner vehicles, a manufacturers incentive of $2000 and a bit of dickering on price, and a lot more convenient for us. Local mechanic told me, good decision as the recent Subarus are not the vehicle they were when they rightfully earned their reputation. Not so much now. In the end we paid about the same for the loaded RDX as the partially loaded Forester, by the time we tallied up all the accessories and ad-ons we wanted. Oh, and we didn't have to wait 6 to 8 weeks. Pretty happy so far with 5k kms.

A truly sad time for those of us who knew him, fished with him, sat on committees, on and on .......................... Barry, you WILL be missed. Barry, you inspired us. You meant a lot to me as a kindred spirit. I'll miss our outings, but know that some of the traditions will continue - at least in spirit. I'll still fish 'the river' ......... and think of you at every pool - left handers, pot smokers, Matts to name a few ............... ............. Rest in Peace - you deserve it!! I love random camping. I go for a few days. Pack up all my crap, clean up the fire ring, and leave. These guys and the 'people' along all the south streams Liv, OM, Race etc are not random camping. They are squatting. Selfish bastards think they own the place. Rules: A seasonal random camping permit at a reasonable cost. 14 day limit. No unoccupied site - you leave take your stuff. Just maybe someone else might like the site for a few days. No permit your unit gets pulled and left, out of the way of other users. It gets damaged. Tough *hit. I've contemplated briefly parking my trailer beside an absent squatter's rig such that they can't open the door. If I weren't worried about the potential violence of the reaction I'd maybe try. See how they feel about not being able to use 'their' site for a bit. Anybody want to join a vigilante group?

Had one of those style from Hyde for my drift boat. Got rid of it after 1st use. It just bounces along the rocky bottom. Went back to pyramid style. Being round-ish, like my standby cement filled paint can for the tinnie, it rolls off uneven bottoms. my 2cents.

fishbait; you'll soon learn to focus each eye on something different. One on the indicator, one on the 'action' of your line. Watch peripherally for changes to the line movement. I am constantly mending, both up and down current, whatever is required to increase the drift. I've never actually counted, but I'd guess a dozen times a cast on average, depending on cast length. Try to make a number of casts of the same length and to the same spot, a bit short of your target, to 'learn' what your line will do next time. That way you can mend pro-actively rather than re-actively as the later more often results in moving more line and moving the fly. Keep learning

Just got back from fall BC vacation. Fished a few new lakes .......... blind. Finder failed to work on day two and thereafter. So in the market. Mainly use in 12' tinnie, but pontoon mountable would also be good for the odd occasion. Actually may get more use as found a few lakes that are a bit of a chore for launching and/or a hike to access. Recommendations and comments welcome.

Flytyer: We plan to do just that later in Sept when we have time to get into cowtown. Can't buy anything but big three locally. Anybody with any of my options haul a drift boat about?? 2004 Pathfinder is ok at 240HP but not sure less would do the trick. Acura at 273 and subura at 175 hp??
