i don't know much about this new sage ''One'' rod , haven't even seen the stick , lucky me , today i got a new in the tube 9'6 4 piece in a 6 wt coming in the One , they say it's a hell'va nymphing stick ,who really knows as they just coming out so i'm told , anyone else have that stick and have opinions , rod should be in my hands in a couple days , then i'll have to decide to keep it or let it go , it was included in on a big trade deal , got me some new old hardys which i'm more excited about then the stick , the hardy's will stay, could be a good boat rod , also anyone use the rio nymphing line they make , opinions also please , good or bad

thats just what you need johnny is some new running , and a great choice , i'll trade you all the slick shooter and frog hair you want for them running lines , how's about that pretty blue loop running line you have , i'll swap you out for a spool of pink slick shooter , pro's , = cheep , casts like a son of a gun , lays on the water nice and don't really have to coil and hold loops , and even you my friend will look like ed ward for the distance you will get dislikes = that shiz coils up real tight and it's a pain in the ass , i do use it in the summer on my trout speys in my boat while guiding , and even then it still coils some , not as bad as when the weather gets anywhere close to -1 , lots of times it will slip through the fingers while casting as so slick , same as if your holding it tight to the cork and you need to lay the wood to set the hook , it will slip , for these reason i will only use it in warm weather , to each his own ,i know some die hard steelheaders who swear by it ,

nymphing for steelhead has been going on for lots of years , and not talking about just nymphing with a egg , small nymphs and even stone nymphs , i can't remember who it was that told me the biggest steelhead he ever got was using a big black stone while nymphing for them , maybe not so much on the west coast , but in ont and the eastern states it has been going on for many years , fishing with center pin reels for steelhead even longer , i have a old friend who's from BC and all he ever used to use was a hardy silex centerpin reel and roe for them , a guy with a center pin reel and knows what he is doing , can really fling it a long way out into the river i think allot guys who steelhead fish with spey rods like to keep it more traditional , i see nothing wrong with someone using a switch or spey rod for nymphing , works good on the bow river for trout and it's way easier on the body throwing them big nymph rigs all day long , and if your going be chucking streamers , well it's for sure allot easier and talk about making nice presentations while searching for big browns with big streamers , down deep and across slow slow

conor i 'm not sure on where it started on the swung presentaion , i would say england myself if i was to guess , and yes that's the whole ideal about it , fool the fish and make him move to your fly , the hotter fish as some call it , there could be 10 atlantic salmon or steelhead in a area , maybe just one will move to take your fly , in my opinion steelhead are much much more easy to fool or have them chase your fly then atlantic salmon , atlantic salmon can be fussy SOB , most times if they get pissed they will attack the fly , i don't think to eat as they don't eat after they come into the river system , till after the spawn and the winter is over , then they do but we call them ''blacks '' ok to catch and in truth easy again as they hungry and will eat on there way to the ocean again , just nothing for the fight like they are when they first come into the rivers steelhead , will eat , the hens will eat salmon eggs for sure , i can't say if they eat much after they come into the rivers, someone will know and hopefully answer this question , i did hear from a good friend who got a steelhead a few days ago with a good size rainbow in it's mouth i don't think nymphing for steelhead is a cause for any concern about foul hooking them , the ones i got when swinging the egg were all hooked clean , not sure about centerpining for them as i have never done that , but i don't think so myself , flossing is a dirty trick they do when fish stacked in heavy , mostly on west coast salmon and in alaska they do it big time , to me thats not even really fishing , more like snagging , if i'm correct i have never heard it before being done on steelhead , now nymphing or centerpining for steelhead with bait , like roe is hard on the fish as they take it in so deep and some fish die from it , when your swinging flies across in front of the fish , they chase and follow , then grab and turn which hooks them in the corner of the mouth most times , i only once hooked a fish while swinging a fly in the down and across for steelhead not in the corner of it's mouth , it was a hen and i stuck her in the bottom and inside of her mouth , don't ask me how it happen or why , but thats where she was hooked

420flyfishin you can fish a nymph or egg with a single hand rod or a 2 handed spey rod , some will laugh at you , but who cares, you do your own thing , the point that a few guys were trying to get across , was it's really easy to catch em that way , and the better way in some opinions is to swing for them , kinda like having a piece of apple pie , or have that same piece of apple pie heated with a scoop of ice cream on top , ones just a little better then the other Rickr come on tex , you should give it a try , those that sent emails wanting to see the best fish in the week we was fishing in the dirty water this year , well after chatting with Ty and getting the go ahead from him as it's his ugly mug shot and i didn't know if he was maybe wanted by the law ,before i posted these pictures , ha ha , here it is , we got this fish in ''the no name river'' he took a big black and blue intruder on the swing , this is the fish that left ty on his knees all out of breath , tuckered him in the fight he was bigger then that female that left us with tears after such a fight and at one point we were up on a big log running down it try to stop her , as she had her mind set on going down river through a big set of rapids , i had my hands on her 3 times and i was just not strong enough to hold her , she ended up sliding down a good trench and the line cut clean off on the rocks , i would say she was the biggest female i have seen yet , check out the size of head on this big wild steelhead , also want to add that Ty was using a 4 inch hardy wide drum perfect and had to do lots of palming it to hold this big buck from running away on us , great fish , great fight, and whats even better , no egg , took him on the swing so this fished moved to the fly , he was even better in real life , pictures don't do him justice , now maybe some can see why we think it's better to fish for fresher fish and take them on the swing , this fish even made me shake after i tailed him
-
nice pictures drew , i got there the day it started blowing out mud , it was crazy , rained everyday and the rivers just kept going up and up , we stuck it out for the week and got some fish , never went up to the babine this year as i kinda figured it would be packed with guys as it was the only game in town with good clear water , glad to see you got fish , we went searching and found some good water that was clear enough to catch fish , 2 ft vis

Over fifty years ago Roderick Haig Brown wrote about this technique for steelhead in his treasure of a book, A River Never Sleeps. I started down the pool happily, rolling the fly out into the tumbled water, mending the line upstream to give it a chance to sink well down . . . The fly came over the loaded place, and I held it there in quiet water at full stretch of the line...knowing how it hung, how it looked, how the water plucked at it and gave it life. I moved my left hand up to recover line, and the pull came . . Clive , someday i must get that book and read it , that is so like it happens , your flies will work just fine , i'll see ya anyway and i'll give you one that i know first hand that works , can't wait to see Al's intruders , as it's your first time Clive , if all else fails , then you go swing the egg , ha ha , just like the game monopoly , you get a free pass and don't have to go to jail , but i'm pretty sure you'll do just fine swinging for them , i'd like to see the look on your face when that big hard tugs hits ya i would have to agree 100% Rightyeegs , as i'm sure everyone would also agree , the bait is another big NO NO , my reason is i believe the fish take em way to deep and more fish do die from it , it is a full catch and release as they all wild , only a few places left in the world like it , catching a hatchery fish is another story , not saying i'm against using live bait on some fish , like worms for brookies as we keep em to eat , just not for these steelhead ,

mike brooks , those will be dandy , lots of guys use Syd's flies , so so many nice flys for steelhead , i'm not a great fly tier , don't have it in me to take my time enough on these steelhead flies , i always seem to be in a rush , when i do get in the mood , it takes me over a hour to do a nice intruder , so i don't tie to sell ,or i'd be piss poor with nothing , yet i buy lots of flys from everyone , i just like opening my boxes and seeing nice steelhead flys , classic ones , dee's , speys and even nice intruders i don't mind buying from guys at all , to me thats the cheepest part about steelhead fishing is the fly , the gas , hotel, tags, food , boat, rods, reels, lines , sinktips , and in truth it comes all down to the fly , so i like to buy stuff that i know will work , plus when i meet guys on the river we always like to do a show and tell and even trade or give the odd fly away , i tell this story to everyone , and it's the truth so help me god , i cringed and hummed and thought how crazy i was when i paid $15 for one fly, i think 4 years ago it was , yep $15 big bucks for one fly , then i gave him a $10 for another one , now this fly was a intruder style , done by Todd Scharf himself while i waited and watched him tie it , it took even him , a long time as he's pretty picky about it being well made , and with the best material , and what a better way for someone to learn from a master , is to stand right beside him and watch him tie it , so it was a win win for me in my mind , $15 bucks for a fly and a hour lesson i thought , first i just had to talk myself into spending $15 for one fly , after that it was easy , ha ha i knew inside me that this fly would catch me fish , i had no doubts in my mind whats so ever , well let me tell you that at the end of the life of that fly , we was glueing it in the hotel room that night and trying to get another day out of it , why , well that fly caught me 11 big fish all on the swing with some of the hardest pulls i'v had yet in just 3 days , best was a 39 inch buck , before it was finished and i had to throw it out , crazy when you think of it , 11 great steelhead for $15 bucks , thats like a dollar and a bit per fish so now i just look at it as only having the best fly's i can get and use , as you don't get allot of chances at these steelhead , so for my mind set , i like to have the very best flies i can get / buy / trade or do myself , you have a whole year to get some good fly's , you don't need allot , try to get some from those who fish the rivers you plan on fishing as they will be in the know what works the best

ha ha clive i will stop in and see you and Al '' adc'' for sure , i know where your staying , just finishing my packing now , waiting for '' angryjohn '' to fly back from texas and then were hitting the road you do have my cell number for texting me , looking forward to seeing you both , i will tell you that you won't see em sipping on top like those big browns and rainbows i showed you and Al on our float trip , that would be just to easy , your first fish will be one you'll always remember clive , so handle it with care and savour the moment , they still take my breath away , everyone of them , i tailed the biggest fish ever '' for me '' , this year for my bud on the first trip over , Ty got a fresh buck that was well over 40 inches , he was so tuckered out at the end he was on his knee's , just before i grab the tail and held him , wasn't my fish but hell it took my breath away at the beauty of such a sweet fish , the raw power in my hands , made me shake all over , Ty looked like he was going to cry from the sight of him and holding such a fish , it really was something to be a part of , i'd post a picture but last time some guys got all carried away and it was a *hit show , don't want to talk about the big hen that gave us a really good licking about a hour before that , and left us standing with our mouths wide open and tears running down our face , had my hands on her 3 times and i couldn't hold that fish leave that story for another day , maybe at your cabin when we have a sip or scotch Rob stop by anytime for some good books on fishing for steelhead and tactics , also have some great books on steelhead flies , and no egg patterns in it , ha ha , this winter again i will have a steelhead party at the house , was a good time last winter, watch some good video's , all is welcome and great to meet new people and you'll be shocked at just who swings the odd egg every now and then , i'll leave it at that , i seen this saying the other day , made me laugh , was on another forum , i think it's kinda true with about how addicting this steelhead fishing can be , here it is below ''I've heard that fishing for steelhead is as addictive as crack.........I think I could kick crack.''

Monger what a hot topic you started , some great posts made , your feeling dirty already and you haven't even gone yet , ha ha , thats just to darn funny so before it really gets into a shits show , as some of these guys i think just want to chuck crap at each other , i'll try to give you my thoughts on it my story and advice to you STORY first time i went , i had the thought of just wanting to catch one fish so i could add it to my list of fish caught , as i spent my days growing up fishing and to me atlantic salmon was the king of the fly fishing , i'v gotten well over 100 atlantic salmon on flies , even some on drys , small green bombers , now thats another story for another day when we meet again on the river Monger , so i had forum member Silver Doc and Mike Mailey from Southbow fly shop , tie me up some flies to swing for these so called steelhead , i didn't have a clue where to start or even what to use , so i sought advice , did lots of homework the time had come and after the long drive over , was 3 of us , the first couple days and i think maybe i had 2 fish swinging , swinging was easy for me as i had been doing it for years , only thing was with a single hand rod and atlantic salmon , they just hold in diff spots then steelhead , i should add at most times they do , but i was this time using a spey rod which i will say helps in getting more distance and is a joy to cast next day i was standing in a run fishing when 3 guys walked past me and started above, coming down the run following me , about 10 mins into it a big fish jumped out in the river and the guy above hooked and landed it , another 10 mins goes by and another bigger fish jump's about 40 feet out from me and the same guy above me hook's it , i'm thinking to myself , holly *hit this guy is picking up fish where i just fished through it , i turn around and walk out from the run as the fish is so close to me by now from coming to the bank , and i said to him i would help him land it , my reason was to just see what he was using , when i tailed his fish , i couldn't believe what i saw in it's mouth , a '' EGG '' orange in colour , he could hardly speak english but after 20 mins of talking with him , and nodding my head many times , he told me it was all he uses , and he got 7 fish the day before , and he ended up getting another following me down to the end of the run , well that night i called a buddy in the area and he had some tied up , next day we went a fishing with the egg , i never used a float / bobber / or yarn , just a big sink tip and it was kinda like letting it swing , same way i seen that Italian fellow fish and catch 3 in less then a afternoon but to me it was still nymphing , only without a indy , i fished for them just like one would do on the bow river as my thoughts they were really just a trout anyway , i ended up getting lots of fish , it was in my opinion very easy , was still allot of fun at the time , i think i got like 15 one day but the guys who were with me said i got 18 , don't matter on the numbers as i just want you to know monger that it is a deadly easy way to catch em , some will call it swinging the egg , call it whatever one wants , to me it's still nymphing for them , they do it lots and lots in the east for steelhead , ont and in the eastern states , most times they use floats or indy's after that first year and my one week trip , all i could still think of was that great clean silver hen that gave me such a fight on a swung fly the second day , she was not the biggest fish of the week , but she was the best fighting fish of the week in which we got 55 steelhead between us and a couple were in the 40 inch and way bigger , hands down as she was so hot and fresh , i can still see her in the air out in the middle of the bulkley next time for me , a full year later i went for a week , i used the egg for a day only when it was slow going and got a couple fish , then the water cleared and i was back to swinging for them with flies , after some great fish on the swing with intruders and such hard pulls that sometimes would almost rip the rod from your hand , it came to me that this was a much much better way to fish for them , and if you hit it right , it can be just as deadly as any egg , only way way more fun and very addicting , i had some days with 12 hooked and landed 6 all on the swing , now you must understand it was a good year for fish , better then they have seen in years , that is not the norm for steelhead fishing , i would say like getting one a day is good if you decide to just swing for them , i went back again for another week , slept in my back seat of my truck , i was now getting hooked bad , and this time again , i only swung for them , had a blast , caught again lots of fish and was really getting this so called steelhead '' tug is the drug'' , so after that trip , well again i went for another week and swung only intruders and black leach patterns for them , i was now very very much into swinging only for them , words can't say what it's like , you will have to see for yourself , i'v seen you fish and i know you'll get into them , it's more of how bad you want to tough it out as it can be slower fishing for sure at times this year so far i have only again swung for them and i will never use the egg again , one could say , i grew out of it by just catching a bunch and getting lucky with a good year for a run of fish , i was able to land 27 fish in one of those weeks all on the swing , it changed me in a big way and the whole thought on fishing for steelhead , i have this year also gone to swinging classic speys and dee's for them , plus also using a 12 ft bamboo in splice joint with some older hardys perfects , it add's to the overall battle and the excitement , i can still remember the day on the bow river about 3 years ago when PKK told me that it's a growing thing and a learning curve , and he told me that after a bunch of fish i would grow to swinging only and then even going after them with drys on top , he was so correct , because he's seen it before many times with guys , now i find myself looking for them so called '' hot fish that will rip you a new ass hole in a good fight '' for my last trip of this season , it will be 16 days swinging some great flies and will be no swinging the egg for me , i will go blank befor i do and enjoy the moments on the river as it really is just god dame nice to be alive and able to fish in that country , i no longer have to get fish to make my day , it's now about the experience next year in 2012 , i plan to just spend my time on the main skeena fishing for the even better hotter fish my Advice to you Monger go get some eggs , take em , stop by my house as i think i have 6 or 7 and you can have em , also i have some great books about steelhead fishing and your more then welcome to have em and read em , just return them when your done , for your eggs , go to troutfitters downtown and get some , they have a steelhead guy on staff who likes to fish em when it gets tough , ha ha , go get yourself some fish , have fun , but i think once you see the whole package , you will grow into swinging only for them once you catch a few , same as i went through , PM me and i'll give you my cell number as i'll be around the smithers area and you can text me , i'll have my jet and might be able to take you for a day with me if your having trouble finding some fish or spots and remember this Monger from me , as your already feeling a little bit dirty , when you have that big steelhead on and you get em in your hands , look at that egg in his month , it's dirty, but nothing a good clean shower won't fix , ha ha all these great posts , some really made me laugh , PGK , easy big fellow , chris , we know how you feel about us fish whores from calgary who nymph , we don't have the luck of living in your country and able to fish everyday for them , so try to understand that guys do like to catch fish , when they take a week off work and spend that kind of money to fish for steelhead , just might not be your way of fishing for them bcube , well stated brent , and it's kinda like using a nymph for cutty's on the oldman , they deserve better , i'd sooner sit all day on a rock and drink coffee and wait for them green drakes to start popping Righteggs , your so correct , it is not a numbers game for sure , and yes brian is a fish whore , everyone knows that , yet everyone can fish the way they see fit to do , i still pray for brian at night hoping he will see that the '''egg or red worm''' is not king , ha ha , just don't ever think or bet with him that you can outfish him , as he'll eat you alive i also think and feel that everyone can fish whatever way they want , , and yes if you really just want to pound some fish , like Rightyeggs says , go get a long rod with a centerpin reel and you'll slay em , use the egg , get some of them pink rubber worms , have at it , and to hell what people say or think , if thats your cup of tea now if your looking for a better experience and i'm pretty sure it will change the way you fish for steelhead, then swing for them with a speyrod or even a single hand rod , and hang on tight for the ride, as nothing is like it for me , i like this tug on the swing , the harder the better , sends shivers up my back and gives me goose bumps , i love getting my knuckles wacked hard in the fight , palming my reel , and last , this is the gods honest truth , i have never ever smoked a joint , tried any of that hash or coke , any dope at all in my life , but if it's like this steelhead tug , i can see and understand now why it's so hard to quit and people get addicted sorry about the big post , and again this is only my opinion , not right or wrong , just the way it happen to me and for those who fish with eggs , beads, big pink worms , whatever is your cup a tea, if you can try to give it a go with a 2 handed rod and a nice classic spey fly and get em on the swing , you'll be more then happy and i will go so far as to say that it will change you

thanks don for posting that , good one , hope this wakes the judges all up in the province and they now start giving bigger fines all the time
-
that must of been a fun trip for sure , thanks for sharing it with us, nice pictures also
-
i'v seen him once myself for a few seconds from the net , but he broke free from the guy with me , brian got him with a guy in the highwater at run-off , tough fish , i'v seen a rainbow this year that was kinda scared bad on one side , we call him Two Face
-
thanks , and i hope you get the $300 reward , well done ,

smitty your correct in that there was a bunch of small thugs , but i'll also add in all the youtube video's i'v watch and on TV when it was happening , sure was allot and i mean allot of canucks jersey's running around , no one can tell me they were not fans , you could see them jumping and screaming about the canucks so to help make it sound better for the media and city , they come out and say a small group of thugs , whats a small group , 10 , 20 , 50 , small to me would be at the most say 100 , i only have seen 1 person in all the video's wearing a mask , yet i would guess i seen at least 10,000 wearing canucks jerseys , but no chance they were fans , or was the group of thugs not small and was big those standing around in my eyes just as bad , cheering them on , oh don't get me wrong was allot of true fans who were disgusted by what they were watching being done , if everyone would of left after the game when it started to get out of hand , then the cops could of done the job way easier rounding up the so called '' small group of thugs'' , yet i don't believe it was a small group , this is not the first time them crazy canucks made a mess , like 3 times , a whole bunch of sore losers who just wanted to raise a little hell , here's a couple of the so called small group of thugs , looks like canucks fans to me , wish i knew how to blow the pictures up as the guy on the car is holding the lic plate and wearing a canuck jersery , -
