    Dad Stuff

A couple of stories that happened around my fathers wake and funeral. Not as depressing as it sounds! As in most of my stories, there is a thread of fishing in it. http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/2015/11/20/249/
  2. I pm'd, but here is Elias's contact info: 958-587-8610. If you google Elias Vasquez fishing you will see a bunch of Trip adivsor and other reviews. If anyone uses him, tell him "El Pescadoro Ricardito" says hello and ask how the Shimano Chronarch (gold bait casting reel) is working for him. Reading the above has me all nostalgic.
  3. Problem with rooting for KC is they celebrate probably more than any other team. That's why they were constantly getting under teams skins this year. I'm not a giant fan of the stare down, even if it was brief. Bautista had shown more than a bit of anger about the calls and I think some of that burst out when he hit the homer. Overall though, much ado about nothing. I thought the Rangers pitcher should have kept his mouth shut, but there is a bit of emotion there as well.
  4. My brother and law and I getting stuck in a bit of a thunderstorm fishing in south texas. He says he almost died. He's a weenie. http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/2015/10/15/lightening-crashes-and-brother-in-law-dies-almost/
  5. For fly fishing: I'd have to say my very first fly fishing trip with Dee at Troutchasers. That trip cost me many thousands of dollars though in rods, reels, flys, etc. I had to be talked into trying the fly rod, hooked a mid teens rainbow on a streamer (suicide fish I call her) and was totally hooked (I know, embarrassingly bad pun). I ended up with several that day fishing hopper dropper setup. Great guide, but more importantly a great guy. I've taken guides in Mexico as well. I always use local, I have 0 interest in taking some big boat with a north american guide. Give me a panga with a local guide every time. My favorite is a guy in Huatulco named Elias Vasquez. I've fished with him a few times now. Grew up subsistence fishing (and still does some of that) and taking out us tourists. Last time I was with him I gave him an old Shimano Chronarch reel (high end bait casting reel). He told my wife, who was with us, that it was like getting a Christmas present. After the trip, he asked us to meet him and his wife that afternoon. He gave me some local tequila (yum!) and his wife gave my wife a traditional "baby Jesus" that my wife had mentioned seeing at church the Sunday before. He knew I was leaving the next afternoon and asked if I could sneak out for a couple of hours "to show me how all the things on the reel work". I said "Sure!" Taught him some stuff about the reel, then we started drifting and casting to rocks in a "USA vs Mexico fishing contest" Only rule was I could not cast until he had the boat positioned where he wanted and was ready to cast himself. Not sure how many fish we caught, maybe 10 or so each, but I remember laughing my ass off. I have no doubt that I could find a better and faster boat with better gear and get on a sail or marlin with more frequency. But no way I could have a better time, or feel like I'm actually interacting with someone in the community. Haven't fish with Elias in a couple of years, I guess I'm due a trip to Huatulco!
  6. I might have to steal a couple of those lines. I loved the Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp! I do have a BC cutty box. Use it 95% of the time. But when it's cool I have WAY too many pockets between waders, shirt, jacket, and vest. Total swear fest anytime I'm looking for dessicant, or my phone, or gps, or radio, or.....
  7. A story of my fishing trip into the back country of BC. Lots of pictures and videos and stories of killer turkeys. Enjoy! http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/2015/09/22/now-this-is-a-fishing-story/

  9. A story about how I buy WAY too much stuff getting ready for a fishing trip....http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/2015/09/16/you-can-never-have-too-many-shoes-or-flies/
  10. Fantastic
  11. I hope a lot of people show up, and these guys get the full punishment available.
  12. Nothing in the above post makes me think anyone was targeting spawning fish. We still fish for rainbows and browns when they are spawning, we just don't target the spawning fish, I don't see how this is any different. Just because bull trout are spawning someplace does not mean this fish was. She sure wasn't acting like it.
  13. Nuclear submarine story. Seems like dangerous *hit happens in a lot of my stories! http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/2015/09/05/water-in-the-people-tank/

  14. Done. I never got to meet Jeff. We conversed many times here on FFC and on the phone when he contributed his time and talent to helping me with some fundraising, both for streamwatch and various cancer and MS fundraisers I've been involved in. He was a passionate fishermen and gave back immensely to the sport he loved.I wish I had gotten to fish with him, I know I would have loved it. Rest in peace Jeff. Enjoy your bench.
  15. I actually sent this to the originator of the joke, who forwarded it to his "assistants". The assistants both took issue with me calling him "The Quiet Guy" and in looking back, that could be true. Maybe quiet when compared to me.
  16. Folks, I put up a new blog post about the greatest fishing practical joke I've ever heard. It's my middle son's favorite story. It's called Never Trust the Quiet Guy. http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/
  17. Just posted the second part of the Edmonton Folk Fest 2015. Next up I think will be a saltwater fishing trip with thunderstorms and some unplanned swimming. It was really fun and exciting. My brother in law calls it the trip where I tried to kill him twice, claims it was horrifying. Some say tomato.......
  18. Only if you are alone, or sight fish nymphing, which for anyone who hasn't done it really fun! by the way, if anyone is interested in a folk fest primer, I just put up part 1 of my 2 part edmonton folk fest 2015 post. Not fishing, but....
  19. Dear Mr. Loblaw, This is a fly fishing website. We don't cotton to those spin tactics around here. It is nothing short of fish torture. The hooks are too big and the practitioners are smelly and uncouth. Next thing you know you'll be catching sturgeon with bait and hanging out on disreputable websites. Oh, too late you say? Peddle your wares somewhere else. BTW, if you want to come back over from the dark side of the force, you know where to find me mid September. I'll be inspecting your gear on arrival however. I have been on a fishing trip with that troutlover fella and he broke out a jig on a cutty hole. A cutty hole for goodness sakes. I won't tolerate any of that sort of behavior good (pffffttt) sir, be warned.
  20. Latest blog entry, from a back country trip 3 years ago..... http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/

  22. Gotta tell ya Taco, very little embellishment going on in this story. Maybe some strong emphasizing, but the actual events are pretty much as is.
  23. Must go on haitus now. And try to catch pike in some cold northern lake.......
  24. Did a final post before the long weekend. Practical joke my dad pulled 40some years ago. http://juststumblingthroughlife.com/
