  1. Do you notice casting the versileader is a pain in the butt?
  2. I have a question regarding sinktips and sinking leaders, what are the pros and cons of each? To me, the sinking leader is appealing because it offers a quick-change option versus having to rig (and buy) a new spool, line, etc. but what are the drawbacks? Does it significantly change the characteristics of the head of your line by adding more weight, essentially overweighting your line for the given rod? Just looking for input, I have a full sink right now that I find is waay overkill for streamer fishing. Thanks.
  3. Click here if the movie does not play. Look at about 1:10 and 1:45 into the video, maybe not class 5, but pretty gnarly IMO.
  4. Umm, no I can sit my ass down in a pontoon and don't have to try and use my atrophied muscles to stabilize the damn thing. This thing looks just short of a medevial torture device. Plus, where do you put all the beer? not to mention the dozens of flies I'll go through, plus my 5 rods, dog, trolling motor, GoPro, fishfinder, gps, subway sannies, beef jerky, etc.. It's just too damn minimalistic. I don't own a pontoon, but when I do get one, I bet I wish I had a drift boat, and someone to row it for me.
  5. I saw a ton of people on these on Whitefish lake this past summer, but just paddling around. I think as an exercise, they would be awesome for core strength. I've seen vids of people fishing with them on the flats, which looks pretty doable as Paula attested to. My personal opinion is that it's a bit trendy and people are trying to take it from lakes/flats to the river...bad idea if you ask me.
  6. The website said they were on for $299, so I called there and they said website prices were only in the US, but the G3s were still on sale for $399 from $499
  7. Country Pleasures has the Patagonia Rio Gallegos on for 30% off....think they only had large left.
  8. Hanson's had a deal on if you bought a Zenith, you got the Ultralite for half off...ended Dec. 31st though...wish I woulda had the dough.
  9. I've tied a version of the peeking caddis with a bead head, Pheasant tail and some antron hanging out the back, then you use a lighter to melt the antron and make a little black head, super easy to tie, but the recipe I was using said to tie them on #10 hooks (if I remember right), they seem huge? Any thoughts on the size? I think the book said it was a Lefty Kreh pattern.
  10. This is my dad and brother's reason too, but it's not like the bank takes your money and puts it under their mattress...it's all already online, existing as a digital entity, you 'signing up' for online banking is merely a more simple avenue for accessing it.
  11. From the City of Calgary website: We just had a big discussion on our community's facebook page about this, lots of people think their dog can be off-leash almost anywhere, but that's not so according to the City's bylaws. •All dogs must have and wear a City of Calgary licence as soon as they reach three months of age. •All dogs must be on-leash at all times, unless posted signs indicate otherwise, or are in a securely fenced private yard. •Dogs must be under control in designated offleash areas. This means they must be in sight of their owners and repond to sight or sound commands. •Dog owners must ensure their dog does not: ◦Bite anyone ◦Injure anyone ◦Chase, threaten or attack a person or an animal ◦Bark, howl or disturb anyone ◦Cause damage to property or animals ◦Scatter garbage •Dogs are not allowed in: ◦School grounds ◦Playgrounds ◦Sports fields ◦Golf courses ◦Cemeteries ◦Wading or swimming areas •While on a pathway a dog must: ◦Be on a leash no longer than two metres. ◦Remain on the right hand side of the pathway. ◦Not interfere with or obstruct other users. •Dogs may not be left unattended while tethered. •You may not cycle, skateboard or in-line skate with a dog on a leash while on a pathway. •Dogs may only be transported in the back of a truck if the dog is in a fully enclosed trailer, a truck bed covered with a topper, contained in a ventilated kennel that is secured to the truck bed, or securely tethered and not standing on bare metal. •Dog owners must ensure that they bring along a suitable means to pick up feces. •Dog owners must pick up all feces produces by their dog both on and off their property.
  12. Grew up camping in the Liv/Oldman/Dutch creek area and things have changed a ton since then. We would camp with my parent's friends and their kids and all the parents definately liked to have a good time and I'm sure were a bit loud at times, a few had dirtbikes and 'three-wheelers' There was never any garbage left behind, nor did they build semi-permanent structures that they left behind, bikes were always on trails, fellow campers were friendly, stopping to chat, but no one ever stalked you to your fishing spot. But they all grew up camping there and respect for those areas was passed down generationally as it has been to me. It is so disheartening to see what that area has become and fear where it is heading. We rarely go up there anymore, if we do, it's mid-week to try and avoid the craziness of the weekends. Most guys here have said get video of the guys in the act and record license plates, etc, which is very important, but I would also urge you to take photos of any atrocity you come upon, even if no one is there to 'catch'. The more evidence there is, then maybe we can send of a nice big 'collage' of images to the gov't and show them what this area is becoming. We used to random camp, and enjoyed that freedom, but if banning random camping means preserving this area for my kids to use with their families, then I will adjust. I would be in favor of banning off-road vehicles in the area as well and although that isn't necessarily fair to responsible off-roaders, they can adjust too if they truly care to preserve this area.
  13. I've never really thought fly fishing was hipster.....until now...Tenkara seems pretty hipster to me...do they make capri wading pants now? Tanktops with accessory clips? Felt-soled flip flops? Massive polarized wayfarers... There will be a big rush on to get the old wicker creels with leather straps. I'm guessing this setup works well for Czech/high stick nymphing?
  14. Well, it's illegal to rip donuts in your vehicle, no matter what kind it is...it's called Stunting...would there not be a similar law for boats? I think that cops can be pretty creative if someone is endangering other people...
  15. I went with the Contour HD, it is more compact and from reviews I've read/youtube videos, it's pretty comparable to the GoPro. I actually got mine in Whitefish at a Black Friday sale for $100 because they came out with three new models. Personally, I like the look better than the big GoPro camera sticking out of the top of my head or having to strap it to my chest. The model I have is similar to the "Roam", I don't need GPS and all that stuff...the HD is pretty cool. http://contour.com/products
  16. I knew about the Taimen, but I did not realize how beautiful the country is. Like they say on the website, it looks like the West pre-industrialization...also looks a bit like Patagonia. Hoping for a good bonus this year, maybe make the trip in 2013!
  17. Matador on Shaganappi and Varsity Drive in the NW. Expensive, but worth it.
  18. Although I would prefer to pay more for gas and still have a job versus getting drug down into another Global Recession and getting laid off! I'm soo sick of this global economic BS....someone in Greece sneezes and all markets are down the next day.
  19. I think with the current economic woes with Greece and China's slowdown, we could see oil prices continue to drop....I don't think prices will spike too much before the long weekend.
  20. Looks more like Ponoka south to me....with Calgary, Banff and Red Deer being 'Islands of PCs'
  21. Heard there is a version where someone photoshopped tassles onto the hubs....
  22. Yeah, maybe valid points, but it's comparing apples to oranges when you consider the Rainbows in PGK's example are in a "Closed System" and the Carp are in an "Open System". It doesn't take any knowledge of 'Species Biology', 'open' and 'closed' systems are taught in 8th Grade science class. How about the problems the US is having with Asian Carp? Have you ever heard anyone talk about Rainbows and Browns as a threat equivalent to Asian Carp? If not, then why not? Just because we like to fish for all species of trout? I don't think so, that may be part of it, but I don't think that any introduced species of trout has posed as big of a threat as Carp. If you were to talk about the introduction of non-native species of trout in the early 1900s, then you may have a point, but how much of a conservation effort was there then? Have these introduced species completely decimated native species as Carp would? I don't believe I've responded to PGK's comments before, but I've read them on other topics. I'm not going to speak to his intellect, but I believe that truely intelligent people are those that form opinions based on factual information and can respect others that have opposing views. They can participate in mature, respectful conversation/debate both in person or online without attacking someone personally. In my experience, anyone that has to tell someone else that their knowledge on a topic is superior is not usually as much of an expert as they think they are. PGK is a pot-stirrer, and as evidenced by this board, an effective one. The best way to deal with those guys is to ignore them, eventually they will go away when they no longer get a rise out of anyone. I'm assuming that I'll never run into him on the river, so why waste precious minutes of your life dealing with him on here.
  23. Frickin' Asian Carp..... http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/b...-212351944.html
  24. "The Mrs. will be starting to worry by now.....just one more cast" Ha ha, my exact inner dialogue...and it always seems to turn into at least 50 more casts.
