  1. Ha ha, I saw probably that same dude out in the middle of the river on Family Day when the water levels weren't that low...musta caught something out there once, I dunno. Let me just say Jerry that last year I was in the same situation as you. I swear the fish keep a tally and make you put in a certain amount of hours before you start catching. I still don't catch many, and I don't feel like I'm doing much differently, but I think reading the water is a big thing, especially since your rig sounds decent enough to get you into a couple fish it's a whole different ball game compared to the crow and oldman etc. Wait till you hook your first 20+ broonie, it's a great feeling!!
  2. I love the "let's play a CD on the car stereo" and use it as our soundtrack as we drive down the road for 5 minutes part. This guy fires me up because he does a lot of stuff wrong, it really bothered me the whole "he's twitching out" thing....um do ya think? You just covered him in snow after dragging him in the river for a few minutes to wait for "cameraman" to finish his commentary. I wish that F&W could do something about guys like this, but technically, they're not doing anything illegal. Is it bad that I wished the cameraman jumping down onto the ice shelf would've broke it and sent these guys downstream on a Bow 'berg for a few miles (ie. over the Carsland weir?)

  4. Great article, gets me exited about the future of Waterproof-Breatable anything...skiing stuff, fishing stuff, etc. Also a great explanation for people who don't know why prices differ so much. I don't think it's unrealistic to imagine our waders as a set of overalls that fit similar to Carhardts (but not neoprenes) due to the softshell-type fabrics. What I have trouble buying into is the fact that your waders breath even when submersed in water. For water vapour to flow, there a pressure gradient must exist to allow that vapor to flow from high pressure to low. I see this when standing in air, but in water, there is high pressure from the water compared to relatively low pressure in your waders...why would the vapor flow out the micropores? unless it's a matter of temperature and trying to equalize temp. or something. The science on this stuff is amazing, but I'm skeptical of waders breathing while immersed.
  5. It features Gore-Tex XCR fabric, so you can't go wrong starting there...then the functionality of the jacket....I wish I could grab one (or a G4), but I already have two Gore-Tex XCR ski shells (= lot of $$) so won't be getting one real soon, but it's on my wish list.
  6. Well where does one get in then on a busy day on the river? Sure, if there's only a couple of you it makes sense to space out as much as possible. Like I said, go up a ways, but not stop right in the next pool. I find on the Livingston, lots of times you only get one cast and the fish can be down for half an hour after. I just don't like guys who think they have the right to the entire river because they were there first....To me, they have dibs on a reasonable amount of water, but not all of it. I also said to be friendly and respect other anglers, to me if you are considerate, you won't usually have a problem. I'm just saying that some guys think they own the river and your the tresspasser because you got there a bit later, which I disagree with. I have a problem when there is tons of open water and the guy starts fishing the same pool as you. I guess I just think that you should spread out as evenly as possible according to the amount of people on the river...if you see one other guy, then head a good distance either way, if there are 10 guys, go to the stretch with the most space between it? How would you know where to hop in if there are 10 guys? or 20? otherwise?
  7. I don't see a problem starting upstream from someone...if you go a ways up. I mean, should there be a "start here" sign and then everyone just lines up and works their way up to the "stop here" sign? If you get to the river first, does that mean that you have first 'dibs' to all pools upstream of you? No, you don't. To me it comes down to courtesy...I will work upstream and down, sometimes I work upstream with dries, and walk back to the truck, sometimes I will work up with dries and nymph on the way down, I will reel in and walk around a pool if there's a guy in it, ask him how it's going etc. if there's a bunch of people, I'll probably just go somewhere else. I was taught to be respectful and friendly, and have had stuff happen on the river, but it's just a sign of the times. I know that my dad has pretty much quit fishing because of what goes on on the rivers these days and I do fear what it is going to be like for my 4 yr old when he gets to be my age.
  8. Voter turnout was poor for sure....I liked those ads like "I couldn't vote because I was in an intense staring contest" or "my recliner got stuck in 'recline' and I could't get out to vote" Pretty good message, still didn't work though. I don't know if it's apathy as much as the attidude that PC's have it locked every time from the votes they do get, so "I" don't need to vote. Boils down to "don't rock the boat"...things are good, people aren't perfectly happy (nor were they with Klein) and nobody wants to chance change.
  9. I too think it looks more natural the Wally wing way!! Say that fast 5 times!
  10. I'm not meaning to start a huge thing, really just asking a question...
  11. Nice tie Terry, Fly Fisherman mag. has a similar pattern this month, but they tie the wing the other way....I was thinking it would look better the way you did it...and it sure does.
  12. Just wondering how you think people get to heaven? by being a good guy? maybe killing some infidels? or just by having good karma and being a good guy? or maybe you think that you die and that's it for eternity...to me, it's scary any way you look at it. Oh, I'm not offended, just wondering what you do think, since you know what you don't think.
  13. Just make sure you don't use them with an indicator....ha ha. Oh and Tako, just because someone has an MSc. or a PhD does not mean every decision they make is right. More "technically" qualified than most? maybe, but input from the people who pay their wages and use the fisheries should always be taken into account. Hell, in the 70s, people with PhDs were denouncing the idea of "continental drift", today it is accepted by 98% of the scientific community. I think the main point is that scientists can be wrong and have been wrong in the past, what matters most is if they learn from their mistakes and make sure they are prevented in the future.
  14. There's 6:48min of my life I'll never get back...
  15. DOn't lie, you know you're working that scene
  16. Ohhh when you go to their "home" page, there's the cover for TB2, but I guess that's just an ad to buy it (which I should)...
  17. AEG is currently touring showing Trout Bums 2: Kiwi Camo, so I doubt TB3 will be out for a bit. Just for those that don't know, the film tour will be in Calgary on March 12th at the Uptown Screen and Stage, doors at 6:00, show at 6:30 Tickets are $15.00 unless your a senior (55+) you can get your ticket for $12.00
  18. For those who rig the split shot at the end of the leader above a knot...tie a knot below the shot to prevent slipping, but tie one just above the shot as well, this way when dragging bottom, if you get snagged, you can pull and most likely bust the leader at the upper knot, thus saving the rest of your rig and you're only out a couple split shot and some leader, tie a couple more knots and continue fishin'.
  19. doesn't Lab = Water-Spaz??? We used to take our lab to Koocanusa and she would have to "save" every piece of visible driftwood from the water...would go steady for an hour or more. Sure do miss her sometimes!!
  20. Glenbow, thank you for adopting this guy. Most people want a puppy, but there are a lot of dogs out there that need good homes. We had to give our dog up (of 7 years) because we moved into on-campus housing at school (not really by choice) and it was a heartbreaking event knowing that there was a possibility that our dog would be put down if no one came do adopt her. Things worked out for us, she was "pet of the week" on global TV and we were informed that she was adopted 2 days later by a person like yourself. Again, I would just like to say thanks and that if we get a dog again, it will be adopted (and we will own our own house)
  21. I bought some GiIlette ones at Walmart at Northland. They seem to dull pretty quick, but I don't have anything to compare them with.
  22. If any of you haven't taken Calc II yet, take it with Len Bos...he's awesome.
  23. youtube has some stuff...including Kelly Galloup tying a Zoo Cougar...Brent, I'll be in to get supplies for the ZC real soon!! Zoo Cougar (not really a beginners' tie, but interesting to watch): Fishing it on the Madison: Decent Deer Hair spinning demo: Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything.....but I'm sure sorry that I missed Kelly at the Fly Fishing Expo this year...I don't think he was talking streamers though...did anybody see him?
  24. Last semester of a Geology degree with concentration in Petroleum Geology.....have a Geophysics 559 MT next week, 10 page paper + 15min presentation the week after reading week. Plus quizzes and critical review due every week, labs in every class and a Petroleum Engineering class for non majors MT week after reading week(a geologist in an engineering course is like a bait chucker in a fly shop) compsci 217...but I don't care, last semester and it's snowing in the mountains, so I'm going skiing....I've got a degree already and have been in the workforce, school is a pretty sweet deal....you don't realize how much free time you actually have until you go to work 5 days a week. Then you have kids and you wonder....how did we waste that much time in our undergrad degrees? Drinking did take up a lot of that time....so did Playstation and Tony Hawk Pro Skater!! Oh and I agree Brent, Calc II is waaaay easier than Calc I
