SimonB Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Yes that's right ! I have almost been living in Calgary for a year and I just caught my first Brown Trout yesterday ! SO here is the story...I am from eastern Canada where trout rivers are not very aboundant...more used to Bass fishing or pike ....Anyway, a year ago when i moved here the Bow was quite itimidating, fast flowing and had no idea where fish would be...So needless to say that last summer, i caught three rainbows.... Not gonna lie, I thought flyfishing was gonna be over for me before it started....then came winter blues.... I started tying and really doing my homework. Fished the end of January and all of march and was quite succesful, LOTS of rainbows and whites but still ..... no ....brown.... My luck finally switched last monday, I hooked into a pig of a brown that put on a pretty good aerial show before running like ive never seen before and headed straight for a run .... instead of running after it, I froze and it broke off...I shed a tear... Then it wasnt until yesterday that my dreams finally came true ! I caught my first brown, not very big but what a beautiful fish !! I can offically say that im hooked for life ! Thanks for reading Simon 3 Quote
Jayhad Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Congrats, you have to love the browns, each one with it's unique markings, awesome Quote
SimonB Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Yes I love how some of them are really silver and others bright gold ! Quote
fishinglibin Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Congrats, they are a beauty of a treat. So now you have had time on the Bow, what do you think? Quote
SimonB Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 I think its a great river ! I am a huge fan of birding as well so I am well served with all the eagles, ducks, etc. Definately has its challenges which is good, it keeps you thinking ! Now that i feel somewhat comfortable on the Bow i really want to start exploring mountian streams and alpine lakes. Quote
Rich Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Congrats no matter the size the first is always a great feeling. And story too. Quote
bjbailey Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Congrats indeed! Everybody has a few of those big ones that haunt them... 1 Quote
Hawgstoppah Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Now that you have cut your teeth on the Bow the montain streams should be decently easy for you... just half size your bow river nymphs system, or go dry fly I love the Browns on the Bow as well, more than anything myself! Quote
fishinglibin Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Love the Bow period, but yes those browns are a treat. Some people cringe when I say how beautiful fish are, and cant understand the fricken amazing colors. My wife was blown away by a hog brown I caught, and the gold was amazing. Brookies are no slouch for color and love the silver bullet. Will never tire of the colors. Check out some of Adriennes pics to see a great example. Are the gold browns, the german strain? Quote
FraserN Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Congratulations. I have caught lots of bow river browns, but I still vividly remember the very first one on a rainy june evening at Mckinnons flats way back in 1984. They really are a special fish. 1 Quote
SanJuanWorm Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Awesome. Your story sounds a lot like mine did 13 years ago. 1 Quote
SilverDoctor Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 There are always those "special" fish that standout. 1 Quote
mcleod52 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Nice story and congratulations on the first brown. They are perhaps my most favourite trout. Stew Quote
alan2 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I haven't caught one brown so far this year, which seems odd. But then again, I got skunked twice in a row, friday and sunday. If I keep that up I never will catch a brown on the Bow LOL. 1 Quote
SimonB Posted May 22, 2013 Author Posted May 22, 2013 Just keep at her Alan ! I havent had the best luck on the bow lately either...hopefully i can get a couple decent outings before the full blown run off starts ! Cheers Quote
