Pipestoneflyguy Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 13 years on the fly, Only the last 5 would be described as obsessive. 3rd year tying flies, 1st year on spey. 40 years of BS-ing about fish caught LOL ! Quote
Guest Bobr Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I ff'd a on and off a little when I was a kid, but have only been at it seriously for maybe 4 years now. Quote
Pikebreath Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 First fish on the fly in 1969 so I guess that makes 38 years but I didn't become really serious / obsessive until around 1977. So I'll say 30 years,,,,, Quote
kungfool Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Have had 15 wonderful years of fly fishing memories. About half of those years were very meager due to career commitments and schooling. Only the last 2 years were spent on rivers with most being spent on still waters. Quote
chidders Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 1/2 for me. Does someone else have another 1/2 so we could make up one WHOLE year? Quote
DonAndersen Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 MrBotangles, Missed the Red Sea thing but was on the Bow when it was really sick. That's when the refineries used a "once through" cooling system and the oils/gasoline/etc in the Bow made for some interesting smells. Now the sweet smell of gas is gone replaced with the effluent smell of 1,000,000 people crapping in the river every day. Oh, for the good old days!! catch ya' Don Quote
Crogg Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Was an avid mountain biker until 2002 until my bro invited me to a guided trip on the bow... Haven't touched the bike in over two years! Cought a few fish, and put on a few pounds! Quote
mikefromsundre Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I guess 20 years fly fishing. 48 fishing. Mike Hey Don Was through Rocky yesterday on the way home from a wet couple of days on the Blacksotne. Picked up some macrame yarn at the craft shop. Thanks for the info about that earlier this spring. Quote
Castuserraticus Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 About 35 years of dabbling. The last 10 I've actually been somewhat serious. Quote
clarki Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I first used a fly rod at beauvais and phyllis lake when i was 9 years old (shortly after moving here to Canada) but it was just trolling flies so i dont count that since there was no casting involved. so I guess i'm at about the 16 year mark now. later M Quote
rhuseby Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Bought my first flyrod in 76 just before I went to Great Bear Lake as a guide. First few times using it, I went to Stauffer Creek, talk about the wrong kindergarten. Used it almost exclusively since then. Hey Don, I remember running into guys with rods from you in the early 80's, when did you start selling them? Quote
crookednose Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I can offer a whopping 3.5 months with 11 full days on the water!! I didn't catch anything until day three ... and funny enough, it was a 3.5" cutty from Gibsons Lake, near the Kokanne Glacier. Quote
jkind Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Fishing for about 45 and flyfishing for 25. Learned on Morse , Freeman, etc. around Swan Hills when I worked in Virginia Hills. Several hundred dollars worth of Royal Coachmans lining the trees of those rivers...love those Arctic Grayling (Thymallus Arcticus). Jim Quote
Stillwaterguy Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I am new to this forum, but I have been fly fishing for 33 years. 30 of those years have been flyfishing stillwaters. But I was born and raised fly fishing the Elk River and tribs in B.C. I have also fished every lake in the East Kooteney's for the past 30 years. So in the future I sure hope to post some topics and some of the trips that I take. I have lived in Calgary for the past 20 years or so, and I do fish some of the waters in Alberta. So you might hear from me from time to time on this forum. So Hello to everyone, and even though I do not know you Birchy I hope your procedure goes well. Quote
monger Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I started with my Dad's bamboo rod in about 1972. I still have the rod. Hopefully my son will have the desire to use it and carry on the tradition. Quote
j5ep00 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I started fly fishing when i was 10 years old. my dad and uncle had my brother and i out casting on the lawn for hours. once we got good enough at casting they took us with them. first trip would have been beaver ponds for brookies. i took 2 years off so that would leave 9 years fishing. by the way i have always lived within walking distance to the river, so im on it about 4 days a week. Quote
Hawgstoppah Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 about 20 years with fly rod. 30+ with all methods I started when I was about 3 with a mickey mouse bait rod I'm sure *gasp* Quote
Carlodabroads Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 20 Years, Damn, makes me feel old at the tender young age of 32.8. Youre right Birchy, that is going to be a crazy huge number. Quote
Weedy1 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Fished for 40 yrs. Started spin casting at 3. Started tying flies at 12, stopped at 15. Started fly fishing for pike at 20 stopped at 25, kept spin casting. Started fly fishing for Trout at 38, haven’t stopped yet, dropped the spin casting. Started tying flies again at 41. Next step - move somewhere with streams and rivers, enough of this pothole lake crap! Quote
