  1. caught my first brown on the bow this year during stampede on a drift with a golden stone. great action all day. excellent time to fish. but if you'd like there some gorgeous small cutty streams south of the Crow, some very secluded areas, not a lot of traffic, could hit those on a weekend and not see a person around, then pass you off to Hawg, Max and Toolman for mid-week Crow action. best part of next july will be that the area i usually go was closed for all of august and most of september, the fish havent been bothered much this year. hope for a short memory and hungry fish, they should be very active in early-mid july as the eastern slopes will only have been open for a few weeks by then. as for the city, hardly shuts down, the grounds themselves are a zoo but the rest of the city, you dont need to spend 20 mins waiting for beer or food. but it is a heck of a party
  2. oh i like that version. getting better. sorry, i'm a YVRer now in YYC. i know a graphic guy who is a member, or at least he is friends with a graphic guy, just dont see him on much. and if coaldale has an IATA city code, it would start with an X.
  3. hey i said that ok, it was a round about sort of way, but that is what i was getting at.
  4. he's cute. looks like a flying snoopy to me.
  5. hah. ok. i'll do that. thanks
  6. ah well, not exactly... as i said, i could go on. what you might really want to do is go and pick up a beginners tying book, ie: anything of skip morris. i have one of his books, someone else mentioned another. it was a recent post,, like yesterday or the day before. there are a few names of books to look at. read through them. being with basic materials and basic skills. really you need thread and dubbing and you have a fly. then add hackle, or a hairwing or a parachute or, or, or and so on. tails, ribs. i think my first fly was a brassie. 1 bead head, a little peacock herl and brass wire. i brushed my dog for dubbing, i also have a cat available in white AND black. look at what you normally fish with, take those materials and learn the patterns, build on your skills and then advance to a different pattern with similar materials. sure you could go spend 5K on tying stuff, very easily, or you can start with about $500, less if you have a taxidermist.
  7. oh, where to begin... go to fly shop and take one of everything... ok seriously. what do you fish the most on your store bought flies? look at what you use most regularly and breakdown the materials. lot of materials are duplicated in many of similar patterns. all items in various colours dubbing, threads, strung hackle (cheap but passible for learning), marabou, chenielle deer, elk, buck tails, calf tail and/or body. beads for nymphs, silly or zebra legs (if something you would normally fish with), gold and silver tinsel, flat and oval, krsytal flash if you like streamers, red/copper/gold etc wire, lead or lead sub, golden pheasant tippet i could go on.
  8. also, try shortening the beard just a smidge so it almost or meets the hook point good 2nd fly
  9. that is where i was heading for it at lunch tomorrow. did you leave me a copy?
  10. thank god you remembered your boxers
  11. where did the maxwell to english dictionary get to? it really is like translating another language. i get the gist, but not exactly sure of each word how about the oval with the simple fish minus dave's classic atlantic type salmon fly, sorry i dont do photoshop other to fix colours, otherwise i would do something up.
  12. hey that's a jeff foxworthy quote. lol
  13. EEWWWWW. that's grosssssssss. talk about tearing someone a new a@@hole. i'm going to icked for ages thinking about that. LOL
  14. What were your favourites growing up that your mom made or right now that your significant other makes that you really, really like? home made cranberry sauce with grand marnier, tourtier (sp?), wild rice stuffing or casserol, fresh cinnimon buns with christmas morning eggs benny... i could go on. oh, butter tarts, cant forget the butter tarts Question 2 is your house decorated for Christmas yet? * nope* If not, when? - it's just me so probably won't again this year so i go to the movies. too depressing to be christmassy all by yourself. but previously, dec 1 Question 3 when is it socially acceptable to get loaded on rum and egg nog? - is now a good time? or as soon as you are off the conflicting meds Question 4: What's on your wish list this year? nothing really, a new rod would be nice, fly tying books, helicopter trip to fish for golden trout (and, no, this is not an offer to purchase anything on that list!) AWWW
  15. Royal Wulff Parachute Royal Wulff lucky penny i'll take these for starters. i'm going to check for the book tomorrow. i'll let you know if i need the patterns.

  19. the newbie prize goes to Birchy - having fun yet? or better question, are you addicted? for me about 6 years, seriously for the last 2
  20. i commented in the other thread but what the hell.... way to go, looks great, keep it up
  21. no laughing here, it is a decent attempt that will probably catch fish. try it out one day. have fun and be creative edit: you dont need dubbing wax. just wet your fingers a little bit and use a little bit of material at a time and spin on to the thread a little at a time. try adding some deer hair as a tail to build on your skills
  22. not so fast on the kids without skill and patience... actually i think that alberta kids should have a WIN card and pay the $8 and need a licence to fish. no a huge fee, but like $5 or $10 for the year. now back to the kids not catching fish and impacting the fisheries... july long weekend carbondale area. lady hikes out of a gorge and asks me what the legal size what the legal size limit is. i said, depends on which side of the bridge you are on, either 30 or 35cm, so 12 - 14 inchs. she said she just saw the parents (who were not fishing) take a bag of full of fish back to their camper and the fish were in the area of 7-10inches, every single one of them and the kids were still down on the rocks (about 10ft above the water with spining rods chucking bait fish and worms btw) so not only did the parents have no concern for the rules, the kids were then left alone because what is the CO going to do. (actually i know the warden down there and he probably would have chucked the kids of the cliff but thats another matter) kids are hauling 8in fish UP a rocky cliff, keeping most of them and the ones they didnt keep got dumped back in to the water from about 12 ft above the water, they were using dead bait, but bait fish and worns regardless. personally i think the limit for rivers for trout should be 2, stocked lakes - whatever. but then again, i dont eat fresh water fish another set of kids in august out at grotto were culling the fish they caught and stringing them through the gills. i did confront the adults but all i got was ignorance and a lot of swearing from a not so classy lady (and i use that loosely) last summer up on burnt timber, more bait chuckers on a bait banned river had a brown (i think) on a rope tied to the back - to keep him fresh for later. forget the guide licences, how about a fishers awareness program, like the hunting course before you can get a hunting permit... kids can fish and catch fish, just as adults can...
  23. if you left it up to my creative genius, the ant would be blue and pink with marabou legs and floss rumps and krystal flash antenae. i'll stick to a pattern for this one.
  24. i have the black and have only used it a few times. i still prefer using herl. i cant say that i have ever had a problem with it
  25. you got me all excited for a second. for terrestrials, are we looking for realistic or just something that could be considered an ant/caterpiller/spider kind of pattern?
