  1. i think this past few months i have met more people and fished more often than i have in the past few years. i have met some great people, willing to share knowledge and experience. I am looking forward to fishing with more of you this year. special thanks to writer1, dryfly, albannachxcuileag, tango, flytyer and scotfly for help with tying so far i have had the pleasure of fishing with and in no particular order. i hope i didnt forget anyone. thanks Max for facebooking me toolman maxwell lonefisher glenbow playdoh brownstone wetduck bhurt knotlikely badger San Juan Worm mkankmike teck cheeler wesg bigbadbrent sundancefisher monger dr bull trout fisherwoman and people i have met but didnt fish with silver doctor TerryH flytyer Birchy hydropsyche trailhead i know there are a few others i have met through the hook and hackle club but not sure of names and such.
  2. i did look at Donald N's site. the flies are easy to tie if you arent doing them for show. i'm sure the fish dont care if the floss is out by a millimeter. LOL otherwise the legs are a bit finiky to say the least this is another good site spider plus i learned something new, which is the whole point. i dont think i butchered them too badly for my first try. and i got use stuff from the exotic box of fur and feathers.
  3. Winter Brown Hook 18 -14 body - orange silk (used silk floss) legs - woodcock head - fine peacock herl tied to hide thread.
  4. it's a cute little caterpiller. so you didnt put the cap back on the pen between flies, did you?
  5. my wonderful collection of 'floss' was handed down by a lady who spent a great deal of time and effort tying classic salmon flies and she also had a box full of probably non-traditional but still antique style of flies, mostly married wings. i know i do not have silk thread. so my floss i guess isn't the same as i have not seen pearsalls here. all of the spools of floss have been re-thread on a blank plastic spool with no lables and they are all the same. 4 strands and each and each strand has 50 ish fine fibers and lay flat if twisted properly. unfortunately that is close as i can get. except i have to clean up the back end. i was more going for proportions because i cant duplicate the silk or floss
  6. sorry. my fault on the matieral. i will edit. there was no recipe. i copied the picture. but that makes more sence now that i have read other patterns and was trying to figure the wing/leg thing. my bad
  7. 90 Second Fly Hook - Daiichi 1130 - 18 Thread - Black Body - Crimson Silk Floss Beadhead - Pearl 11/0 Thorax - Peacock diamond dub Rib - very fine sliver wire
  8. Try number 2. i just copied and pasted the recipe. I really wish they would learn to speak English in England. Crimson Woodcock Hook: 18 - 14. Thread: Crimson silk. Hackle: Well-marked red-brown feather from the marginal coverts of a woodcock. Body: Crimson tying silk, floss silk or wool. A thorax or peacock herl or red fox fur produces an attractive fly. The Crimson Woodcock may be regarded as a general river pattern and is particularly useful as an imitation of early stoneflies including the February red. (Seal’s fur used) I had floss issues. just pretend the back end is nice and clean with no wandering floss strands. The one thing that i did find out was that the hook commonly used is a partridge L3A. The Mustad 94840 is an equivalent.
  9. My first go at a traditional north counrty spider love these pattern descriptions hook 18 - 14 body green silk leg woodcock edit: description
  10. i was thinking attitude, perhaps?
  11. i was going to ask what the phone number was. but if it's on the license then i dont have to. way to go greg. i'm having trouble with the bow... what kind of bait were they using?
  12. i'm not going to google earth that... it looks like it could be where we went?!? yes?!? i think i will be out tomorrow afternoon
  13. i have slinky people in my life too. sandwich anyone???
  14. thank you for sharing that story gary. it is nice that the 2 of you were able to get out finally and have some special time together.
  15. my most memorable was my trip to vancouver island. fished the quansam river for pink run. didnt catch a thing but i got to spend the afternoon tying salmon flies on the beach and then taught my longest best friend how to fly fish and then we hit the river.
  16. the city streches of the bow are not exactly secret, but in some places the access is. i think it is nice to help out and give some sort of detail to the conditions in the area and give a place to start from. when it comes to the small rivers and streams away from the 'general' public pressure a pm is best. even then i still am pretty general unless i know the person and only give a starting point and let them explore and find the sweet pools. there are a few stretches of some beautiful rivers/streams where i fish the most and i hardly see anyone other than around the access points or right next to the provincial campground. what they dont know is that 1/2 mile up or down is some fantastic fishing. i had to fish a new stretch of the river last summer and still didnt get as far down as i wanted to,damn those pools were amazing and it was really cool to explore a new area.
  17. well now. that is, umm. i want to know how she keeps a straight face. informative.
  18. some people dont seem to know the difference between the gill plate and the rakers. i just dont want to poke the poor things by accident, so i try to get them upside down in the water and calm before i pick the fish up for the 2 second photo shoot and tailed off to the water the fish goes. i have seen a fish biologist out of sask handle all his fish by the gill plate. i guess if it is done properly then no harm no foul but back to my first point, some people dont know the difference.
  19. that was the plan. i think Rob had someone in mind. i'll have to talk to him about it again. i'll pm you
  20. i knew i should have filled up in claresholm
  21. yeah, i know. and i wonder why i'm still single. HA
  22. any old pair of running shoes will do. i have gone barefoot as well. but stopped doing that after the crawfish on the island started trying to nibble my toes. every year i spend $15 on 3 or 4 pairs of neoprene water socks from walmart, canadian tire or superstore. one pair wears out, use the next pair. i will be looking into heli prices in march, it has to be a long weekend because we wanted to go up early on saturday and come back monday night.
  23. does such a beast exist??? i'm still not doing laundry or vacuuming... that's what house keepers are for. besides, house work cuts in to my fishing time and the crap will still be there when i'm done.
  24. hey troutslayer, pipestone and i were talking about a heli trip for golden in august, probably a weekend trip... none of this hiking crap. LOL Trailhead. i'll be south. come fish with me. Birchy - take your pants off. you dont need waders if it is 20 - 30 degrees. that's what shorts and water socks are for.
  25. noOOoooo, not the global warming argument again this is the guy i was talking about on page 2 or 3 of that conversation
