Glad to know I'm not alone. People always look at me funny when I tell them I fly fish but don't like eating fish or seafood at all. Well, other than fish and chips and sushi.

Ok, pardon my ignorance but who is the "REAL Jay Jones"? I don't know him... Part of the reason I'm hoping they have Water Masters at Bass Pro is that I'd also like to see one up close and in person before I lay down my money. Otherwise I would've just ordered direct from Big Sky Inflatables.

Heh, this thread has really gone all over the place. Nets, rod actions, ex-wives, Oakleys, stuffed fish, South Bow, and April Vokey... If a net isn't worth $130 to you, then don't buy it. Same goes for overpriced rods, reels, lines, Oakleys and whatever else. My expensive rods and reels don't make me a better caster and I'm sure there are people out there with less expensive gear that cast better than me. But for me, there's a perceived difference and I enjoy using my expensive stuff so at the end of the day that's all that matters to me. Plus my $100+ Fisknat net looks real nice when I take a picture of a fish in it. So just to keep this post on topic, did anyone who went to Bass Pro notice if they had Water Master Grizzly or Kodiak inflatables there? They have them on their website and it's likely the only thing I'd buy there since nobody else in town carries them thatt I know of.

Yeah, there was a bad casting video with April on Speypages and it was old. Her response to it showed a lot of class. Yes, she's pretty and hopefully people who see her get the idea that fly fishing doesn't have to be only for a bunch of old fat guys (the stereotype if you ask most people - no offense intended to any fat old guys). Fortunately she also uses her popularity to start and promote Flies for Fins. If she can market herself and maybe bring a bit of attention to fly fishing and conservation then more power to her.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I'm a reel junkie and the least expensive one I own is an Islander. Also have high end Nautilus and Loop reels with killer sealed drags even though they're totally unnecessary for trout. As long as I take care of my high end, overpriced gear I know it'll last a lifetime. Buy once, replace never.

Durability and quality of the wood. Also the rubber bags are better for the fish than other types like nylon and your flies don't get tangled in the mesh.

Wulff makes an actual "spey line" with the triangle taper so their single hand line would probably work well for single-hand spey casting. Never having cast one I couldn't say for sure, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Really you should be able to single-hand spey cast just about any line out there on almost any rod. Just like anything else, some will work better than others for each caster. I prefer a fast action rod combined with a line that has a short head with an aggressive taper and I'm mostly using water-borne anchor casts. I also use a fast action two-handed rod with skagit and scandi heads, so there are a lot of similarities there. Single hand spey casting with a longer line would probably be a little more like using a midbelly spey line like a Windcutter on a two-handed rod.

You could try a tungsten bead and a few wraps of lead wire right behind it. Might make your nymph a bit front heavy and nose dive a little though. Don't know how much of a difference that would make to the fish...

I frequently spey cast with part of the head inside the guides when I'm fishing in close. You just have to adjust your casting stroke a little so you don't rip your anchor out. If I'm fishing within 15 feet or so I just go through the motion of a double spey so slowly that there isn't much of a D-loop. In those cases I'm really just using the motion of the cast to move the line from downstream to cross stream. Once you start to get a feel for the casting basics start playing around and experimenting. It's a blast, especially once you work in the haul on the cast. I haven't used an overhead cast for fishing subsurface flies since I learned the single hand spey.

Red-light cameras significantly increase crashes

I've had good success swinging streamers during runoff, but high sticking nymphs along the banks can be effective too. Since a lot of the fish are going to stay out of the heavy current they'll be along the banks, so let your streamer swing all the way in. My experience has been that with the low water clarity during runoff big streamers that move a lot are most effective. I think (and I'm not a biologist nor do I play one on tv) that the fish are sensing the movement far more than seeing the streamer in that situation. Sculpins, Clousers, buggers, and all the standards are good and the size and movement of the fly are more important than colour during runoff in my opinion. Hey, why are we talking about baitfish in the entomology section???

Another vote for the Opti lines and the 40+. Beulah even lists the 40+ as a recommended spey casting line for their switch rods.

My sentiments exactly. That Greg Gutfeld guy was an editor for Maxim and Stuff before he was on Fox. Not exactly bastions of journalism. Doug Benson is a stand up comic whose career highlight was being on Last Comic Standing and just had his appearance at The Comic Strip in West Ed Mall cancelled "for the safety and security of The Comic Strip's patrons and staff". That was probably half his income for the year. Consider the sources of this dreck and take it out on them, not on Americans in general.

It's bum, not bumb. If you're going to rag on someone for their spelling and grammar at least try to get yours right when you do it.

Unfortunately I think the opposite will be true. Floating down the river with a six pack is a lot cheaper than going to a patio on 17th or something else. When the economy tanks liquor sales go up.

I tried this with ostrich the other night but it was pretty dry and brittle so it kept cracking around every 10-15 fibers. Would soaking them help this or is it just because I'm not doing it right?

The reason they push the extended warranty so hard is that's where salesmen make the bulk of their commission. Even at a place like Future Shop where they don't make commission they still get some sort of incentive for each one they sell. My parents made the mistake of buying one once. The product failed outside of mfr's warranty period but within the extended warranty but they had to fight the company to get them to honour it. It took threats of legal action to get them to do the repairs. Rick, this is bang on with my experience as well. They figure out those curves then get a bean counter to tell them the point of diminishing returns or whatever it's called. Usually the point just before that curve starts to climb again is where they cut off the extended warranty period. There will always be outliers in any statistics based on the real world (as opposed to academia) and those are the people you hear about that actually benefited from an extended warranty.
