There's a school zone and playground zone that I have to pass through on my way to and from home. The people I see speeding through them most often? Moms with kids in the vehicle (after all, her kids are safe in the vehicle, not playing in the area). I'll bet if I sped through the school zone where her kids were she wouldn't be so happy about it though. And by the way, I never speed through these zones. In fact I have no demerits on my license and haven't gotten a ticket of any kind this millennium. Naturally now that I've said that I'll get a ticket tomorrow morning...

Ok cool. The 15' sink tips might have been tough to cast with the 40+ line unless you cut them back. One tip with the Airflo polyleaders - they come with a length of looped mono at the front so you can do a loop to loop connection with your tippet. Cut the mono off and make a nail knot loop out of the polyleader material instead. I found out the hard way that the mono to polyleader connection has fairly low break strength.

A while back Gord Kennedy told me that he always roots for the fish. At the time I didn't really get it, but back then I was getting skunked more often than not. Once I started figuring things out and catching fish with a lot more consistency I started to understand what he meant. If I landed every fish I hooked or even worse hooked a fish on every cast then it would take all the fun out of it. For me it's about the chase much more than the numbers, so the one that got away is what keeps me coming back.

Don't forget the GPS has a margin of error as well. Something like up to 3 metres or so I think. While speeding excessively may be bad, let's not forget there are tons of other behaviours while driving that are much more likely to cause accidents in my opinion. Tailgating, changing cd's, eating, reaching for that dropped cigarette, dialing a phone, texting, yelling at the kids in the back seat, reading (yes I've seen this in rush hour traffic), and the list goes on. The girl who I saw with a smoke in one hand, cell phone in the other and steering with her elbows the other day in Arbour Lake wasn't speeding. These cameras aren't a safety measure so much as a cash cow. When you go speeding by photo radar you don't get the ticket until a couple weeks later so you continue speeding on your way. You could get multiple photo radar tickets in a single day without it having any effect on your driving. It isn't an immediate deterrent like a cop pulling you over. Eventually people will learn where the cameras are and slow down through those intersections then speed up again anyway.

I've had the Simms G3 for a year and a half now and I don't think it can be beat. The biggest advantage it has over the Patagonia in my opinion is more individual pockets and two integrated zingers for clippers or whatever. There are the two big chest pockets that will each fit a large C+F box and a bunch of smaller pockets with waterproof zippers. I keep my cell phone in one, camera in another, then distribute things like leaders, tippet spools, and other odds and ends between them. I actually miss wearing it in the summer when it's hot out.

The last 40+ I bought in December 2008 still had this issue. Not sure if it was older stock though. I haven't had any coiling with the newer Airflo Skagit Compacts though so that could be the case. Never had cold weather issues with SA lines and really enjoyed the GPX taper as an all around line. I've been using the Loop Opti Stream lines lately and with the short aggressive heads they'll turn over an indy and three nymphs no problem, but they're on the expensive side.

I'm in the "depends on the time of year and river" group. Since I carry a backpack most of the time I tend to carry more fly boxes. Right now my dry fly boxes stay at home and usually when I get to where I'm fishing I might leave a box or two in the car if I don't think I'll need what's in them. Generally it's one small nymph box (GRHE, PT, CJ, princes, etc) one big nymph box (SJW, big stones, etc), one terrestrial and big dry box, one mayfly dry box, one caddis dry box, and two big streamer boxes.

Saw a drift boat go by on Saturday. They said they were pulling out at FC and I'm guessing they put in at Glenmore.

I like to mix things up until I find what they like. Usually use a type 3 tip, start by casting perpendicular to the current and either cast further up or down stream to change my depth. Start by letting the fly swing with the current to the dangle, pause for a couple seconds, then start stripping it back and varying between long slow strips and short fast ones and everything in between. If that doesn't work I'll strip during the swing, but the majority of the hits I get on streamers are either on the dangle or the first strip. I always try to have a tight line during the swing to feel any hits. I actually got more hits during the swing this past Saturday than on the dangle or strip though, which is kind of unusual for me.

I got mine at West Winds and I've also seen it at Fish Tales and Troutfitters. CP probably keeps it in stock too, but honestly I've never looked for it when I was there.

What do you want to do with this laptop? Email, web, and MS Office? Databases? Graphic design? Some video games on the side? All of that will make a difference in what you get.

Yeah, when I first started tying I looked at it and thought it was over my head so I bought the Intro version which is really good as well. When I finally bought the Benchside Reference I was blown away by how detailed it was and still useful for a beginner. The photos are excellent and the steps are thoroughly explained. It's the only fly tying book I couldn't live without.

The Bow will be closed this weekend, so everyone please stay home. It's the annual weekend that they clean all the rocks in the river. If you happen to see me out there with a rod it's only because I volunteered to help with the cleaning. I'll have a special rock-scrubbing fly on the end of my line.

Heretic! Blasphemer! Who's this "Lefty" and what does he know about fly fishing? I've never seen him in any of my spey casting videos... Honestly, I don't know if it would or not. I've spey cast a 4wt single hand rod on the Highwood and still caught fish but I haven't tried on any smaller water. I don't doubt that it would spook them though.

A 4 wt is the smallest production two-handed rod that I'm aware of. You can probably get lighter custom ones made, though. The Echo Dec Hogan 4119 is probably one of the most popular "trout spey" rods on Speypages right now.

I only use a single haul as my rod hand is going forward and it gets me all the distance I need. If I cast any further then it isn't fishable with the single hander any more because there's too much line to mend with a 9'6" rod. Here's what it looks like when an expert does it. You can see a haul around 17 seconds in and another at around 30 seconds.

Last year at the Fly Fishing Expo Francois Blanchett helped me fix a casting fault but didn't have a double-handed rod rigged up. We used his 10' 7wt single-handed rod exactly the way you're thinking of. The biggest difference will be whether the line you have on it is properly suited to spey casts like we discussed earlier in this thread. You can really go through the motions with almost any rod/line setup just to get the form down, but you might not get the same performance out of it. Also, make sure you start out with wool at the end of your leader instead of a fly. Really easy to screw up an anchor placement or use the wrong cast for the wind direction and give yourself a new piercing.
