This is a very unique idea. Everyone ties a fly they think will work that night and then give er a try. Maybe provide a fixed list of materials that can be used and have people come up with something on the spot. Kinda like the Iron Chef show with the trout being the judges. I'd be into just sitting on the bank to watch the outcome. And then, copy the hot fly for future posterity.

There is some great advise here. Hawgstoppa is right in that if you set hard and often, a newbie will hook up more (as I did) but I think after a while, a person learns to do the quick "hit. Is that fish?" as opposed to the "slam. duck. Tree hook". One thing I learned from Brian is to set often. Repeat: set often (and get the weight/depth right). The one thing I'm not doing as much is the saltwater/Bass hook set. If I'm not in the tree behind me, I'm hopelessly tangled. Maybe I'm long-distance-releasing a few more fish because of that, but conversely, the more time your nymph spends in the water, the less time you're dealing with rats nests. I hate rats nests.

Big fish like big bites, eh? A lot of very knowledgeable anglers say the weight is better on the leader and not the fly. A heavily weighted nymph has all the action of an anchor dressed in feathers being dragged along the bottom. 18's and 20's are working very well on the Bow Bruisers lately.

Her portable gear weights at least 40lb's. No kidding. I'm surprised she doesn't have some of those Toon wheels afixed to it.

It came to me as I was writing the reply. What do they call that? An Epiphany? I've never used knotsense but I'm going to buy some tomorrow. The only thing I can see go wrong is the dap of clue will slip because its not fixed to a knot. It would be sweet if it worked. I'm always adjusting my weight (one of *the* most important things to do, IMHO) and stacking them up on top of a small bb welded in place makes sense.

If I ever found myself in Leanne's position (and we all are. We never know if we're going to live to see another day), I hope I had the strength she's showing. You shouldn't be reusing shot. When you crimp one on, the lead is soft enough to form a little dent. If you took it off and resued it, you now have a dent to deal with and it will start slipping. I've never tried it, but I would think a spot of knot sense might stop it from sliding?

Hi Rainbow. No. I've never experimented with the system as much as you just did. Good on ya. I heard about it from the rodbuilding.org site but back then, it wasn't public (you had to pay for the pamphlet). Now that I see its in the public domain, I though I'd share it with those on this board who have more experience in these matters. I see DonA is currently scrutinizing it. Sounds like it helped you determine the line you need for your new rod. Good stuff. But if you can cast the 220grain 50ft with ease, maybe something with more grains will cast even easier? It is a fast rod and maybe "overloading" is what's right for you (for distance). Keep in mind, the heavier the line, the more splat it has, which is not good for dry flying spooky fish.

I won't any more! DonA does have a very good point, but I double dare him to post that at rodbuilding.org. Don, if we going to call ourselves "rod builders", maybe you should call yourselves "rod creators"!!!!

Although there are some people here with a low # of postings bidding, most of the contributions and the biddings are coming from active posters. It shouldn't be that way. Lets hear from more lurkers. Some of these items are a little pricey but I'm telling you, if you get out once with some of these guys, your hit rate will increase. I paid Hawgstoppa (formerly known as Bowcrow) to take me out one day. I have never paid a guide before (or since). My hit rate doubled (at least) since then. And Brian, if we ever meet up again, I owe you. Much more then I knew at the time. (you too, Toolman). All of these guy offering trips, although a bit pricey, will be worth it. Although I've never fished with Missingthebow, Clive/adc, Max, Taco, DTB, , etc., I suspect a day out with them would increase my hit rate even more. It would probably take 5 yrs off your learning curve. Talk to your wife and then just do it. If not, at least bid on some flies. Put me down for $30 on 33a.

Tako, I'm going to bitch about the CW rip off for a very, very long time. Its still a very sore point here. At the expo, at last weeks sportsman show. I'm sure there are a lot of people on both sides of the boarder who wish the bitching would just go away, but it won't. Sorry. For whats its worth, so far I don't like the smell of the Open Spaces deal. When I learn enough to have an informed opinion, I'll be sharing it.

I have the DanCraft Sig III 8.5ft 4pc 3wt that I use as my primary rod on the Bow. Its the first rod I glued together and I like it lots.
