Actually the most effective method I have found in camp is banging posts and pans. Always works, my Mom routed a big sow grizzly in her tracks and sent her skittering. Air horn sounds like a good idea. I actually never carry anything with me. 12 gauge in camp.

Actually this particular Windcutter line I had it cut back by a shop in BC. They swore it was 400 and even wrote it on the box. The plus side is that it not too light and I can still cut it back to where I need if If I want.

I happened to pick up a food scale at Safeway on sale. Always read about actually weighting your line to really dial your grains in. Dropped on one of my lines that I always assumed was 400 grains, it ticked in a t 490. This is great I have a few lines that I am now going to go through. In the past I have always asked manufacturers and other fishermen about how long to cut, to customize lines and heads. This has opened a new world for me, even for my standard lines, I love it. now I can cut my heads to match my lines.

This web site contains a wealth of great information on a variety of subjects that have been very well covered. Some very recently and some multiple times. I'm not saying don't post questions, but do a bit of searching first. If the answer isn't available then ask. Such things like. How do I fish the Bow What is the best camera What is the best rod How do I put together a basic set up Where is the best place to fish and tell me down to the square inch. I'm too lazy to look so tell me I know myself and many others users here are always ready to give of our time and what knowledge of what we have gleaned about this sport we love. Sorry for the rant. I buy mine from stockards (jsflyfishing.com), theirs is imported from england and thick enough for nice segmentation. Some great colors too.

I'm a swivel guy also. like not only the weight but the swivel does cut down on tangles. I carry a few size swivels. I also carry a number of different indicators. "thing-a-ma-bobber" are great but I also use yarn ones if I fish shallower with emergers in summer. I also have an indicator that I make out of a piece of floating fly line about 10" long that is great for under the film or rising nymph work. The short of it is that I use a number of different set ups and love to experiment. I've fished most of my life without indicators just tight line nymphing and it's great for small streams. I think where indicators shine is larger rivers like the bow where you need to control depth out a ways.

Great book, just browsed through it when I bought it a couple of years ago but am settling down to a solid read now, ggod stuff.

Good idea to tear into your boxes at least yearly. Taking everything out and restock allows you to re categorize the flies and get rid of ones that are not useful or bedraggled. Good time to give em the old stem treatment to perk em up.

Small point, the Meiser is not based on the Deer Creek. It's the other way around. Bob Meiser was asked to design an inexpensive version of his rods for TFO. The Meiser and DC are not in the same class, quality or category. Looks like you made a great choice with the gloomis, heard a lot of great things about it.. you'll have a lot of fun with that rod, congratulations.

There are some patterns that I whip out quickly but others that I spend more time on, traditional Catskill dries and Salmon and Steelhead flies can be much more time consuming. I take a certain pride and enjoyment in tying, be it a 5 minute fly or several hours. I enjoy tying which for me is a different category than fishing, often akin to meditation. We are all different and so have our own direction, which is good. But I do believe that after it leaves the bench, like Max said then it's all about casting and presentation. In the end we are, after all, presenting to a wily wild trout, not members of this board for its critical scrutiny. Have fun, experiment in tying and cast a line.

I tie on a Nor_Vice most of the time but want to pick up something compact for traveling adn doing shows and clubs. I'll check it out.
