  1. I've seen their vests/packs at Wholesale too, but that was two years ago
  2. I was supposed to travel there but friends had to cancel, but I did a little research beforehand. There is apparently some stocked rainbows in some of the faster, higher elevation steams around there. This was in the north and west-central areas I believe. I discovered that Kawakoi, Kauaikinana, Mohihi, Waialae, Koaie, and Waikoali all contain trout. These are all in Kokee State Park. Season runs from June 1st to September 30. I can't wait to hear what 420flyfisherman has to report about Kauai. I definately want to visit that island.
  3. I think weather plays a factor in how good the fihsing is, but I don't think it's possible to know exactly why the fishing should be good or not. Some days it seems outstanding, then the next you wonderr where they have gone. All you can do is adapt to the conditions and change your approach if stuff ain't working. Cloudy vs. sunny days depends on where you are fishing, time of day and year, water temp, and what species you are targeting etc. Lately I have had success on rainy days when the bwo's are hatching or I'm fishing streamers... If the sun peaks out, the bwo hatch dies. On sunny days I have had more luck nymphing, especially with princes and boatmen. In the summer, a warm calm day will usually lead to a great evening hatch, but a cold front usually means a smaller hatch (or none). I've read hot weather can condense a hatch, making it last a shorter period of time but thicker. Generally speaking, I think this is true. Strong wind can be damaging to a hatch, probably because it helps their wings dry faster and leave the surface way quicker? Wind can be good by blowing terrestials into the water. Speaking of which, hopper fishing is usually best on hot, dry windy days (something we have been lacking). I've also read that wind out of the west is preferable any other. I think this is probably related to barometric pressue changes, but I would tend to agree with this. Barometric pressure changes are not as good for the fishing, according to some people. Apparently the best time to fish is during a steady period with little pressure change. I think the fishing can still be alright with higher water, just change up your technique a little. Falling water levels are better than rising ones I think, but may be wrong. These are just generalizations, I'm sure there are people who know alot more.
  4. What I meant to say was how disappointed I was to find the same bad stuff going on in that area. I should have reported more things I saw ie. quadders crossing the Liv and some pretty permanent structures being built. I heard alot of building going on at Spears creek then saw four quads rip through the river. It's too bad, but I guess this has been discussed before and will not die until more enforcement is introduced. I'm sure there are some responsible quadders out there, but I was pissed off a few times at what I saw on the Liv and other creeks in the area.
  5. Brugal is hands-down the best rum I've ever tried. Its a Dominican rum with a very unique flavor that goes very well with coke. It's now available in alot of stores in Calgary now only beginning six months ago or so. I used to beg friends and family to pick it up where it was available, I almost *hit myself when I finally saw it sold in Calgary. Appleton's (the aged stuff) a close second I guess.
  6. I have caught a few brookies in the NW Bow, two close to the dam as well but none as large as yours. I know someone who has caught Lake Trout below the dam as well, must have snuck through somehow. The upper Bow has lots of brookies so I guess they sometimes make their way downstream.
  7. I have talked with a few people lately about treble hooks and none of us could come up with a good reason for why they aren't banned, especially since a barbless treble hook would still probably do more damage than a single, barbed size 16 fly. What gives? Anybody have the inside track on why this hasn't been addressed, or has it and I haven't been paying attention. Very sad to see the deformed mouths and jaws of most of the cutties I caught in the Livingstone last week. I don't think I will go back there, it has gotten worse in the past 5 years. Not saying it's related but it just got me thinking about it. I cut the line of the fly is deep, but some guy fishing a $6 Rapala might not agree. Any thoughts?
  8. public access points and stocking info are already available via backroads gps maps.
  9. I couldn't find any posts on the relatively new GPS version of Backroads Mapbook. I just got a new Garmin 60CSX hand-held and decided to add the Alberta version of the Backroads map to the unit. I am very happy with this product. The price is a little steep at $150 for just Alberta ($275 for both BC and Alberta) but I think it's the best fishing tool I've bought in years. The detail is the same as the regular paper copy, but it has a couple of advantages as well. First, topo lines have been added and are visible when you zoom in. Second, the ability to zoom in up to 20m (I think) allows the user to look at very detailed images of tiny tribs (otherwise missing on the paper version) and even side-channels of the main stem. Third, the same campgrounds, hiking trail, logging roads etc. are also visible on the software version. It also identifies where there is fish present in a body of water. The other thing I like is you can view the maps on your computer without having to flip through pages to find where the route or stream continues. Carrying the paper and gps version together is a good combination and made our last trip out more enjoyable. Buy it!

  10. I don't get Ann Coulter, I mean how the hell can somebody with a BA in History from Cornell be so ignorant? She makes Christians look bad, yet very few well-known neocons disagree with her views. Sarah Palin ain't the only conservative woman making a fool of themselves: Anybody who believes this *hit can go ahead and waste their time.
  11. I worked with Jeff at Canada Post and fished with him often as well. It is such a shame, he was a solid guy who loved his family. Never stopped talking about his next family camping trip. Every weekend it seemed he was taking them camping or on some vacation. I will never forget the 5 days we spent (with mkm) down in the Castle Area this August, fishing and camping, drinking beers around the fire. Watching Jeff land a fish you could see the joy this sport brought him. He did alot of great things in his life, and had alot of good stories, but I could tell nothing gave him more pride and happiness than his family. This incident has made me think about some of the risks I take when fishing, and how my actions could impact my wife if things went bad. I feel so terrible for his family right now. Rest in Peace buddy.
  12. lol, wow check out those rain jackets! almost as bright as the fish this season is going to be wicked dude, can't wait to get back into the mountains
  13. That's a shame, I guess I'll turn him in next time I see him.
  14. I 've seen this guy at FC also, I wondered how he was cathcing so many large fish, didn't talk to him but now I regret it. Reminds me of another guy I came across last year during runoff, he was catching alot of fish using a center-pin setup, fishin with a ton of weight and using a very large pink bass worm, unscented accoridng to him. This thing was like freakin 6 inches long! He caught 25-30 fish that day at least. He even let me use it to catch a fish, not my tyle but hey, it works. I laughed because he said alot of flyfisherman are all snobby to him, and won't ask them what he's using. I dmit I only started talking to him to see if he was using bait. He was a bit rough with the fish, but hey he was an ardent C&R guy so I didn't really have a problem with it too much. At least he doesn't hold the fish out of the water to try and take pictures when he's alone.
  15. a guide from montana told me it will prbably happen soon there as well, haven't hecked for an update starting wearing aquastealth last year and I'm very satisfied
  16. Nice Pike, I love to eat them in the colder months as well. I like it with cajun spice.
  17. Take away fisherman and you take away the vast majority of people who give a *hit about fish. Most epople don't even know there are fish in the Bow river. Without the volunteer hors of recreational fisherman there wouldn't be near as much concern for fisheries conservation on the Bow, garbage cleanup etc. They can talk all they want about how it is inhumane to catch a fish for fun, but fisherman are major contributers to environmental stewardship. I suppose they might argue that this is out of our own self-interest and has nothing to do with our appreciation for the environment for its own sake. This "marketing" campaign seems clever and I get what their intentions are, but come on a fish being compared to a kitten? Who here flushes their kitten down the toilet when it dies? The thing that really makes me laugh is that PETA has long bemoaned society giving special treament to "cute and cuddly animals." Now they are trying to encourage people to respect fish because they are "sea kittens," as if that makes them more worth saving. How about respect for animals regardless of their looks? I guess only the people capable of that are the ethically-superior PETA members. This campaign is insulting to the intelligence of the general public (including kids) and more accurately represents PETA's own ****ed-up membership. If they are indeed successful in shifting public opinion in favour of banning recreational angling it won't happen for a long time. Even know thay have a fairly large membership, the rest of the world thinks they are nuts.
  18. Never fished, ice flow too hardcore and I don't want to drive south to discover the same.
  19. thanks for the tips, this is why I have never even really considered it before.
  20. any good tips for walking on the ice, I guess I should probably stick to spots where I know the water depth
  21. Yeah, I'm not usually too anxious to get out fishing in the dead of winter, it'll probably turn into a walk more than anything.
  22. I called in sick and considering doing a little fishing this afternoon, looks like it'll be -3 for the high. I think there will be too much ice build-up up here in the NW, but not sure how much better downstream.
  23. Are you worried about the murky water harming aquatic life, or were you actually planning on fishing soon?
  24. I think you'll like this rod, I use the exact same one when nymphing the Bow. That extra 1/2 foot really makes nymphing a pleasure. I tried out like 8 different 6-weights before deciding on this one, great price for a great rod.
  25. I used this method (sort of) last year for a bit, mostly in the faster deep stuff, but in most situations I wouldn't use it. I do love how the split slides off when you snag as opposed to losing the fly, it does get it down nice and fast too. I also liked it because it was easy to cast with more weight at the end of the leader. I never used 3x the depth though, can't imagine it would be easy if you're fishing 6' of water.
