Bear Attack On The Dogpound
tgo replied to bigbowtrout's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
NEVER play dead with a black bear he'll eat you, fight him off if slowly moving away doesn't work and he attacks you. Grizzly will MAYBE leave you alone after an attack, intent is not to eat you really. Sometyimes they come back later I think. A grizzly will kick your ass in most instances, so get down in a ball and cover your head and face face is what I've been told. I'm no expert but I've been told by those who are thats what I should d differently with each kind of bear. Definately fight off a cougar if you can, make yourself look big and mean again if slowly trying to exit the situation doesnn't work. Don't turn your back, and like Taeke said the last thing you do with any of these animals is run. -
Bear Attack On The Dogpound

A little overboard don't you think? I bet you'd expect to see a black bear on Dogpound Creek eh? Anybody carry bear spray on Dogpound here? Anybody makes tons of noise on Dogpound? If yes I bet you don't catch many fish there then. All we know is the man suffered injuries to his leg, maybe he was trying to fight it off with his fishing rod and thats why it got chewed up. Maybe he was fighting off the bear, fell over and the bear bit his leg, who the hell knows. Yeah people have to learn to AVOID encounters and know WHAT TO DO when you do encounter one, be able to recognize different bears and act accordingly, take into consideration cubs if they are around etc. Thats a good message, but don't insult a stranger when you don't know the full story. -
Bear Attack On The Dogpound

There's more black bears around that area than most people realize, at least thats what has been told to me by locals. Earlier this summer I was fishing around Bottrell and came around a corner and saw a bear up in a tree. I was shocked, but reached for me camera to take a picture as the bear hadn't noticed me yet. I looked back at the bear after finding the camera and he is staring right at me and beginning to climb down the tree. I slowly exited his view then hauled ass back to the car. I told the guy who runs the campground and he said he hears about 25 sightings a year, he didn't even sound remotely concerned. Its so natural to be really quiet on that creek since the fish can spook so easily, beiong really quiet and alone around bears is not a good thing though. Before this year I fished dogpound if I wanted to get out of the city and not have to worry about bears because I was fishing alone. Hope this guy is alright and recovers quickly. -
Three nymphs when nymphing, depending on depth, wind and hot fly maybe switch to two. Hopper-dropper setup unless fishing close to logjams and tight spots or if there is an obvious hatch.

I voted yes because I believe those who say it has reduced the pressure on these streams. I didn't fish the Elk drainage before the regs, I was usually happy with Southern Alberta for convenience and being a broke-ass student I didn't want to pay more to fish. The three days mkm and I spent on the Elk, Michel, and Wigwam we didn't once see another walk-and-wade fisherman, and we covered a ton of water along easy access points, except for the Wigwam of course. We had some of best dry-fly fishing we've ever had, during which we had the river to ourselves save for a few drift boats on the Elk. I don't know what it was like before the changes, or that CW licences are in part responsible for the quality of these fisheries, but I was certainly happy with my experience and was glad to pay 20 bucks for it.

The FLi 6wt 9'6" is 3 3/4 oz. and the 9' is 3.625 oz so its pretty marginal, probably more significant to have a good, light reel but I can't really say for sure. If you are mostly high-sticking and roll-casting, which is mostly what I use it for, then it shouldn't be a big deal. -

Yes a 9' 5wt is good for alot of situations, including some situations on a small creek. Thats why I suggested it as an alternative to getting a new 6weight. Delicate casts are easier with a lighter rod though, and alot more fun with a fish on. I'd rather have a shorter rod for small creeks if you do have to cast, say upstream, when there is alot of over-hanging obstacles. Try a Sage FLi, its been a good for me and its only a bit more expensive than a Launch. My 9'6" only cost $330. -

I would go with a short 7'6" for the 3w, why would you want to high-stick with a 3w on a small creek? Most times you can get away with a smallish dry and a small beadhead dropper on flouro tippet for small creeks. Ever consider a 4-piece 5w? Pretty versatile for most fishing situations, including high-sticking smaller rivers. IMHO you should keep your 2-piece 6w for the Bow since it don't really matter you aren't really packing it in like you would in the mountains. If you do like high-sticking and are stuck on a new 6w, get a 9'6". I like my FLi in that length for nymphing the Bow. Good luck, buying new stuff is fun -
Other than making Racehorse murky in the late afternoon a month ago, never really had a big problem with them directly. I actually really want a quad because I think they're kick-ass and I know I would only use it in a legal manner.

The Bow has quite a few pike, there mostly the slow deep inlets or side channels but I've seen them in moderate to fast water along steep banks as well. Only caught 1 pike in the Bow though, a 17" pike in the NW last year.
-
weird man, i'm surprised a bright fish like that would last long in the bow...I know they don't really live in rivers, but are you sure it's not a golden shiner? Pretty common baitfish and looks pretty close to the fish in the picture.

Unbelievable pics man! I can't believe the crispness of the photos.

Diefenbaker is pretty cool for sure, but the Qu'appelle Valley Provincial Park is popular as well and there is great walleye fishing there in the "Fishing Lakes", only fished Echo Lake though. the Qu'appelle river flows just a a half-hours drive north of Regina, but never fished it. If you are interested in using fly gear on a river your best bet might be goldeye in either the Qu'appelle River or South Sakatchewan. Flyfishing for Pike in the shallows of some of the prairie lakes would be good. Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park on Lake Diefenbaker is a popular spot. Buffalo Pound has fishing I think, since its just a dam on the Qu;'Appelle. Don't fish Waskana Creek in Regina, but thats obvious once you see it. There are numerous opportunities to fish private trout ponds in Southern Saskatchewan, jst ask around at the local tackle shop. Have fun, Regina is not a bad little city.

2007 Fishing Enforcement Stats
tgo replied to southfisher's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
These stats surprise me alot, I've never seen a copy. It kind of annoys me that so many people get warnings, whats up with that? These stats won't help more people get involved by calling in rule-breakers. In 261 cases, 93 people were given a warning because they were using bait illegally? You always hear how that fish and wildlife are underfunded, maybe they need to start enforcing the penalties strictly. I understand that in some cases the infractions are not serious and maybe I'm a bit naive, but this looks bad. I've never been given a warning in a driving infraction, though I'm sure they happen, but if I don't have a licence on me when fishing I have a 70% chance of coming off with a warning? There must be something its not showing, like maybe they had a WIN card and only got a warning. It looks like about 35% of people who are using bait illegally are getting off with a warning as well. I can count on one hand how many times I've been asked to show a licence. I could have been poaching for years by now and, unless someone had reported me, I could have gotten away with alot. If that isn't bad enough, maybe I only come off with a warning the next time I get caught. Maybe it isn't worth their time to prosecute? -
Very cool pics man!

Nice fish man, I gotta try that pond one of these days.
