  1. I am in the process of making a few of pairs of Classis snowshoes out of Maple and braded nylon. I am using the nylon because it last 4x longer than babiche. These are for go and show and I would like to add cleats to them . The only cleats I can find are Dion and out of the price range I am willing to pay ( Damn Canadian $ ) Has any one else tried adding cleats and what did you use. That's not going to cost me $100 . Any ideas would help . Paul
  2. There is some great snowshoeing or ski touring on 93 s also Boom Lake - Chickadee valley - Marble Canyon
  3. I like to cook and I do a lot. I found that my wife just kept on buying new knives when the old ones got dull So I went to Cabellas and bought a 300 series Chefs Choose electric knife sharpener a couple of months ago. It easy to use , works real well and there is not a dull knife in the house.
  4. Anyone who is the guiding profession knows that it is as much about meeting the clients growth needs. As it is about anything else. The journey not alway the destination.
  5. I have to agree with Don. I have hired guides on Vancouver island that should not be in the buisness. No people skills and you know your there to pay for there boat. I'm sure the BC government doesn't care. But this guy got there first.
  6. I had the Goodyear Armars on my 4 Runner and got 120, 000 km on the they were excellent in everything ice , rain , mud , back roads and highways.

  12. Randy you already named it Rod Builders Supply out of Victoria BC. There Canadian , downloadable catalog, good selection and great to deal with. I've been using them for 20 yrs. But don't fret if you call and he's not there he likes to go fishing too.
  13. Thanks Don for the reminder on the swing weight. Those agate guides would be to heavy. I have been dealing with RBS in Victoria for about 20yrs and like that you can down load their catalog. The service is exceptional.
  14. Thanks Don that will work I am trying to use up a bunch of old fly rod blanks and Ferrels I had lying around Not sure what guides I will be using yet. I have a bunch of old red agate guides and tips. Left over for a dream rod project I did awhile back. Again maybe over kill. Again thanks Paul
  15. I am in the process of building a 3 piece cane spin cast rod ( I was asked to go fishing this fall and realized that I didn't have a baitchucker ) I have spacing guides charts for fly rods but none for a spin cast. I think that using a fly rod template would a) make it to heavy over kill. Any ideas out there. It's a 8' 2 tip large trout rod.
  16. If you check my pack at any given time. You will find gortex pant , gortex shell , down mid layer, hat & gloves Stuffed in a waterproof compression sack. Prepare for everything and hope for nothing.
  17. As a guide I get asked that question quite a bit. Also we are all admitted gear heads so this is the prosedure I go though. Tell clients a) What do I need it for ( I already have 2 of everything ) What do I want it to be able to do ( gear is a tool and there is no perfect tool for everything ) c) What am I willing to pay ( more versitile the tool the higher the price ) d) Brand there is lots to chose from. ( do your research not always the highest price. ) e) Living in tourist haven here are a couple of my fav online sites ( the last hunt , live out there , altitude sports. They are all Canadian )
  18. Personally I think they should have a best before date on fluorocarbon. At the knot is usually my indication that it's done.
  19. Two blondes are in a river holding fishing poles with the lines in the water. A game warden comes up behind them, taps them on the shoulder and says, "Excuse me, ladies, I'd like to see your fishing licenses." "We don't have any." replied the first woman. "Well, if your going to fish, you need fishing licenses." said the game warden. "But officer," replied the second girl, "we aren't fishing. All we have are magnets at the end of our lines and we're collecting debris off the bottom of the river." The game warden lifted up the lines and, sure enough, there were horseshoe magnets tied on the end of each line. "Well, I know of no law against it," shrugged the game warden, "take all the debris you want." And with that, the game warden left. As soon as he was out of sight, the women started laughing hysterically. "What a dumb Fish Cop! Doesn't he know that there are steelheads in this river?!"
  20. I'll give one to Don Anderson It was his rant about plastic rods ( god I wish I would have saved it so I could share with you guys ) That got my interest in cane and cane restoration many years ago. Also his way of keeping the gov. On there toes.

    Learning

I learned on a beaver dam. Where there was a bunch of little brookies. Just had fun with it. So my suggestion is to find a place like that. Start small and go for volume at first. Learn from each hookup. Then go after those dream fish. After 25yrs I still haven't hooked mine but that changes every year. That's the fun of it.
  22. Don't get your hopes up to high ! It's still a pro team from Toronto who's team colours are Blue & White.
  23. Time to go though some old storage bins. I think.
