  1. Def Cotoneaster, you can prune the crap out of these things, they love it. your lawn is brand new and you seeded it, imo, it looks pretty good. seeded lawns always take longer to thicken up. thats why sod is awesome. Leave the top dressing, no need to cover it up. Its there to level out your lawn and to give your new roots something to grown into. It, in time becomes part of your new soil profile. Thatch is good but can also be very bad. It will happen naturally so imo, I would bag my clippings as part of thatch control, eventually you'll end up aerating as a way to control your thatch. If to much thatch, your roots will always be shallow and weak. you want to your roots down into the soil so dont cover up that top dressing just let it be and let the grass grown into it. If thatch gets to thick and compact, it causes BLACK LAYER, which is an oxygen deprived layer in your soil where everythings dead, really stinks too. Nothing will grow there. see it lots on golf greens. Thats why we aerate. aeratings the multi tool. Mow, period! Mow lots!! Mowing promotes growth. Its what makes the grass spread out and thicken up. Everytime you cut it, it repairs itself by growing new shoots (produces the grass blades) and roots (they spread and produce new shoots). I would mow half the length off and then do it again in 3 days and again and again and again. That said, its gonna get hot in the next few days so you may want to do that today and then wait until its not 28 or 30. Or wait until the evening when it cools off a bit.
  2. @ bigfry. Just ignore this comment. Theres way more to it than us outdoorsmen and fishers just being stupid like he's implying, not trolling though.
  3. you might be able to get away with that in coaldale but, where I live, you need to take are of your yard. One of my neighbours called the police on another neighbour because his grass blades where to long. Its a thing, I asked him how he would even F'ing know that! One guy got a letter from the city stating that a neighbour had complained about his weeds and if he didn't deal with them, the city would show up and do it and then bill him!!!!
  4. I fertilize twice year. I hardly ever spray herbicide as I dont need to, I pull weeds as I see them and they've never really been out of control. That said, sometimes you need to you use them and I will if I have to. I'm more concerned about the non-fishers that live on my street, that wash all 4 of their hummers every single weekend of spring summer and fall. Not to mention, driving one of those multiple vehicles everyday also does its fair amount of damage
  5. lol, ants are an issue at my place. The stuff I use kills plants dead no matter what Ive tried it only seems to keep them at bay for a few days.
  6. Its all good man, love the post. what a difference a few weeks makes eh. Dont over water. If the ground is always saturated or wet the roots will be weak and shallow. Once you hit it with the TP, you'll be great. its early enough in the season where you should see some massive improvements by the fall.

  12. Great reds on that one SD. Im hoping for some various colours. Ive seen some really excellent purple ones.
  13. Thanks man, I love these. I found one growing under my spruce tree in my front yard 3 years ago. Did some research and started planting them last season. They dont flower their first season so I was super excited to see them start up this spring. I just planted a bunch more seeds down the other side of my house as well. In reading up, they (whoevers in charge of) want to change the name of the flower because of the Columbine shootings years back.

  15. A couple Soft Hackles. I really love fishing these as a single fly. I typically use partridge but dont have any. This hackle is CDC, Im excited to try them, out.
  16. Yeah man its a joke! Is there to help you after you've paid into for 40+ years. Unfortunately people continually scam the system so when a guy like you comes along, you get treated like the scumbags that dont want to work.
  17. First go at a Jimmy Legs. Always wanted to give one a try, buddy gave me one last week and it produced immediately. Are the legs to long? I think the first segment from the body to the joint is. I love these, super buggy pattern and real easy.
  18. Those guys that come around to aerate are the worst. My background is horticulture and turf management. Do yourself a favour and dont use them. They're machines are dirty and contaminated with "THE STUFF FROM EVERYONES YARD THEYVE DONE PREVIOUS/WEEDS, DOG *hit, ROOTS AND STUFF THAT YOU DONT HAVE IN YOUR YARD" just saying. If they dont have a pressure washer on site and offer to clean their machine first, its a contaminated machine. These guys are just weeds spreaders. Quack/crab grass is the worst, you really can't get rid of it without major steps taken. These guys just spread it around the neighbourhood. They just run the equipment, most of them aren't even sure why their doing it other than they get paid. Fertilize with weed and feed. it will feed your lawn while killing your weeds, it works! Killex DOES NOT kill everything but you're lawn. It kills dandelions great, after 15 years on the golf course thats about it. That said, dandelions go away on their own after awhile. Killex doesn't kill your grass. Its great if you have lots o dandies and want them gone!! Quack/crab grass is a problem and the #1 reason I wouldn't lets this guys in my yard. If you've got it and want it gone. You basically have to dig down 3'-4' and start your yard from scratch again or use use Round Up and then fix your lawn after it dies too. Be Careful, Round Up kills everything it touches!!! Its very effective. Im the guy that uses a kids paint brush and strokes individual blades of it to try and keep it from coming into my yard. Either one of my neighbours knows anything about yard maintenance, or one form of grass or weed to another.
