  1. Midges... I have used them as part as a dry dropper. The problem I have is when trying to fish them on the bottom. I've trailed midges behind a SJW or PT but I'm convinced this just costs me money when I get hung up on a rock or log. If I use a midge above(off a tag) I find that it ends up wrapping around my fly line every other cast. Does anyone actually have luck with fishing these near the bottom on the bow? If so, any tips or links would be awesome. Cheers, JT
  2. - Nope, I have always just tried to land the fish as fast as possible, regardless of head up. - Yes, If I mis-hook a fish and he's sideways I just horse him in and release him or loose them -N/A - I have fished without a net on small cutty streams, where I am using barbless hooks and committed to the dry. Reason, less things to carry and I have a horrible fear of bears and have convinced myself that a fishy net might bring unwanted friends ( total BS but when fishing alone my mind sometimes plays tricks on me)
  3. I have a 10.5 switch 5wt and love it. I originally had it setup with a RIO switch line, which maybe it ok at doing everything. right now I have a compact Skagit line and love it. Spey cast down stream then switch lines and work a nymph rig or large dry dropper upstream.
  4. Different disease but would literally cry if this happened to the bow http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-37177181
  5. I just don't understand why people can't check the regs!! especially the Bow. you can look at your phone and go, o-**** I guess I shouldn't use bait and poach fish.
  6. 7 sounds like a awesome day. I'm happy as long as I don't get skunked!
  7. Anyway we can petition for the Bow to be a fly fishing river only!!
  8. @SanJuanworm I really hope you catch these A-holes!
  9. I haven't landed anything since Nov 2015. been out at least half a dozen times.
  10. agree with Big Dirty, went to a size 16 and got a few hook ups. Didn't get any bites on the boatman above Policeman's
  11. Ya I was wondering what the hell was with the Didymo!! someone should genetically engineer a bug that will eat that *hit.
  12. It will be interesting to see how effective this is considering that lack of funding to enforce the regulations. The major problem makers usually don't go out of the way to look for updates. I guess time will tell. It would have been nice if there was volunteering opportunities for anglers to help protect these sensitive waters.
  13. I have the Pieroway 10,5 5wt Its my go to rod for the bow. Its nice that they are located in Calgary. It looks like their prices have gone up over the last 3 years, so there might be better value out there.
  14. F**** this totally sucks. I can only hope that they get a serious fine!
  15. fly fishing etiquette! that's my sore spot but my therapist says I'm making great strides. I no longer have "episodes" which involves loud noises and eye twitching. I believe she called it tourettes I think the hard part about the bow is that the sport of fly fishing has taken off and bow is getting pretty crowded. So I can see that there are some of us that would rather not hand out fishing advice in hopes that a newbie gets frustrated and throws in the towel. The only advice I have is that the Bow is a Bitch! Experiment. I have actually caught a fair number of fish, in unusual places on odd fly patterns. Best of Luck JT
  16. Olive over white size 6/8 Clouser with a size 18 pheasant tail tailing off the back has been working for me. Most of the takes have been when I can get the swing to a slow enough speed that I think that I have got hung up on the bottom.
  17. If you have a limited time I would recommend hiring a guide for the day.The Bow river is amazing river cause it takes serious skill to fish it right and even once you think you have mastered the bow, she can humble you in a hurry. The southern part of the city is your best bet! JT
  18. Check out the petition for the stop of the Springbank dam. Still don't understand why tax payers are flipping the bill for flood migration. This should be a matter with the owners and their insurance company. https://www.change.org/p/government-of-alberta-and-minister-of-environment-and-sustainable-resource-development-stop-the-springbank-dam-in-calgary-alberta?after_sign_exp=member_sponsored_upsells#share http://www.dontdamnspringbank.org/
  19. hmm if you are just looking for a straight up dry fly line I would just go with a standard WF floating line. check the grain weight on the rod to match it up but the standard is usually 2 lines sizes higher for switch. Aka 6 wt switch would use an 8wt line. Personally I have a 5wt switch with a Skagit line. which is a blast to practice spey casting and a really light switch line that can get away with casting large dries but usually using it to nymph.
  20. Bowflyman - do you find that action of the streamer is more important than the pattern?
