  1. ahh yes the Drake board... no morals or moderation... just about perfect...
  2. Did this come from the Drake? My God I hope not - haven't got the newest issue yet but if it is something REALLY changed in the last three months or so...
  3. The Drake... As far as I am concerned it is the only one out there.
  4. yeah he can lay it out thats for sure..
  5. In all honesty I would probably post here more often if there was more BS and laughing at others expense. It can't always be serious fly fishing stuff
  6. I understood that the peer to peer is not currently working? I have had troubles making it run on my machine.
  7. that stinks of elitist snobbery. What about treble hook only waters... didn't think so. What we need is education for the new fishermen. bring the ethics we all seem to share to the other branchs of the sport. I think we get more out of putting our energy into education that venting our energy with a pissed off post on an internet forum... Most people I have encountered that are fishing unethically (ie barbed, baited etc) didn't realize they were doing something wrong and welcomed the education. Some would say "why didn't they read the regs" and I agree, however education late is better than none at all. For the ones that knowningly do it, we will never change them and the law must step in and come down on them hard.
  8. take it to springbrook - easiest fix ever!
  9. Its not only fame - some people really want to share their love of the sport. I totally understand that, but I think that the whole approach to the sport has changed. It used to be that your dad, uncle, brother introduced you to a sport and then you in turn only invited those that you believed would appriciate all the wonderful aspects of it. Now not only is hotspotting an issue but the general promotion of the sport (AEG, Drift Movie, This and other boards etc etc) all lead to more and more people on our rivers. Evertime someone posts the name of a river, regardless of the obscurity or location, it will draw people. Even if the GPS coordinates aren't listed rivers are easily explored. Everytime we post a how to article or advice we draw more people to the sport. I don't think that fly fishermen should stop being helpful but at the same time we are creating our own demise by using publically available information to share our experiences. This allows anyone to enter our inner circle, whereas in the past we were able to carefully choose who we invited along. Progress - love it or hate it - it will destroy our sport. Just my thoughts.
  10. Threepoint creek is good for beginners - haven't been there this year, but usually some small willing fish right at the first campsite into K-country.
  11. those will certainly cartch fish.
  12. As elitist as this may sound I only get my licence checked when I am not fly fishing???
  13. Don Quixote any serious fly fisherman should read this and draw whatever inferences they would like... replace the lance with a rod and the donkey with the vehicle to get to the rivers and its not much of a stretch. I will also second the Longest Silence.
  14. Using a fly to fish is different than fly casting... There is no "fly casting" in pinning. I have seen guys drag a fly behind a boat troller with spin tackle and wouldn't call it fly fishing just because they used a fly...
  15. I guess the negative feelings arrise mainly due to the fact that pinning is historically a bait fishing method. my understanding is also that due to the low drag associated with pinning you don't always feel the hook up as quickly as with other fishing techniques, which in turn allows the fish to take the "fly" deeply before you set the hook, which in turn leads to an drastic increase in hooking mortality. We can still release these fish, but thier chances of survival dramatically decrease.
  16. don't give up on 3point. As said above it is a large system and it maybe a bit early. I used to fish it a fair amount and one day it was awesome the next day it was like someone had drag netted the river and left nothing, then one day later bam 30 fish day... *shrug* wonders of mother nature.
  17. Hey if someone wants to share their spot with the masses all the more power to them. If it also happens to be "your" spot I guess it wasn't a secret anyways as it would seem that at least one other person knows about it. Don't get me wrong I am not so in to Hot Spotting, I think we should all have to find our own special places, but the water does belong to all of us to share or not share as we choose. but what do I know about (there is this great creek across from the second road weast past the funny shaped rock near the best vista in the foothils) Hot Spotting... *shrug*
  18. Totally assemble your own rod - I just completed a 4wt, 4 pcs of my own. Love it that much more cause it is mine!
  19. To Echo (echo echo echo) what everyone else has said, don't think that you can save money by tying your own flies right out of the gate. I wouldn't recommend a kit either. See if a friend will let you sit down at his vise and try a couple. If you like it great - next step is to buy the absolute cheapest vise you can find - crystal river or something -, a bobbin holder Don't bye fancy sissiors "borrow" the ones from your mom/wife's sewing kit. Buy only what you need to tie up some simple flies (elk hair Caddis and maybe some W. Buggers) think larger hooks (size 14 for hte EHC and size 4 or 6 for the buggers). Don't spend 80 dollars on a saddle or cape (get the "whittings 100's in the hook size you intend to practice with) If you tie twenty of each and still like it pick a simple nymph (gold ribbed hair's ear or pheasent tail) and a whip finshing tools and tye twenty more. If you are still happy dive in with both feet spend a small fortune and welcome to the obssesion... just my thoughts...
  20. Also don't forget the books that are available at your library or for purchase. They cover topics such as casting, reading water, rigs and techniques. Aside from that the best learning tool is practice!
  21. wait a mintue I just responded in the "ask a pro" section... which I am clearly not... sorry.
  22. My good fishing buddy learned to cast and fly fish on a $50 walmart rod that came with the reel and line. He is now one of the better casters and all round fishing guys I have ever met. He has since seriously upgraded to an outfit that suits his need perfectly. You have to know a bit about what you are doing before you can know what you like... It may sound like an echo but sign up for a class or lessons of some kind. The type of rod/reel/line setup wont make a huge difference in learning the basics, and then you will know if you even like the sport. This may come as a suprise but not every one does !!!
  23. You have to always to work the line to 'assist' with the perfect placement. Sometimes you have to pull back a bit, sometime let a bit out. The best is to practice with out thinking about fishing. Hit a pond with the ice leaves and focus 100% of the cast - it will come after some time.
  24. Try aiming aout two feet above the target. Almost into the air. This should result in a softly placed fly.
  25. Always support any local "any"shop rather than the big box (fly shop or otherwise). That's just good local stewartship.
