  1. Here is a link that shows the knot http://www.rodworks.ca/knotrh.html
  2. 90% of women like fly fishermen - everytime...
  3. Typically I bring several boxes to the river with me, but only select certain flies to fill a small (very small) box that fits in my shirt pocket. At lunch if I got back to the car I will change them up if required. I select dries and nymphs for this box. Two small boxes if I plan on taking lunch with me and wont be returning to the car - more variety. Some days if I plan on streamers I will toss in a streamer box aswell. a couple spools of tippet and a spare leader also hit the pockets and maybe a small tin of split shot.
  4. Leroy - Thanks for teaching/encouraging me to tie - I had never tried until I saw your show and now faithfully watch whenever I can. welcome. Brian.
  5. to me always impressionistic - buggy and dull is the ticket for me, streamers aside...
  6. What length of furled leaders does everyone use? I assume that smaller streams have shorter leaders...
  7. before I type this - don't get me wrong I am against this so called "management plan" What if a plan that worked good for the ram river... catch and release... was strongly opposed by a bunch of people in Montana while it was being implemented, and they created a petition? What would we all have said about that... we should be careful about treading to strongly on another provinces wishes, there is a strong possibility that there are issue we are not fully grasping... again don't get me wrong I am just presenting the other side - I don't think there are any issues that we are missing here - it is a crap plan, period I am just sayin'
  8. sounds like a waste of vodka to me... I would recommend drinking said vodka - the smell might not bother ya as much after a few shots..
  9. try moving the tag of the hackle with the thread as your secure it down... this seems to allow the thread to 'slip' between the individual bards and reduces the 'antennae' affect. not sure if that makes any sense...
  10. I have spent a fair amount of time in the bush and seen my fair share of bears aswell - so far so good knock on wood. I think that we are losing the point of this post - some poor guy got attacked by a bear. It doesn't matter if he did everything 'correctly' or not - he got attacked by a bear. We should be worried about him. That could have been anyone of us regardless of our percieved 'skills' in bear encounters. Every situation and every bear is different and they will react different to every situation. I find it kinda sad that we use this situation to talk about how great we are in the woods... Heres hoping that it is never someone on this board in a story like what was presented at the begining of these posts. my two cents.
  11. so far so good in my mind - doesnt seem to be a way to add the google toolbar though... thats where I store all my bookmarks.
  12. I think that the project by TU was in Airdrie and was to clean up the water way going through the park. TU's stance was that any cleaning of tribs to the bow was positive. I don't think that it was presay to improve fish habit in nose creek... I could be way off base with this though..
  13. As everyone is saying - there is a lot of water on the bow... but for how long, the popularity of the sport is certainly increasing, as is the population base in Alberta, and with these increases will come increased opportunities for commercial ventures and recreational angling. I think that licensing guides, as is done in many areas (BC for example) will help to ensure that there is "lots of water" for all uses, including commericial ventures, as the city and sport continues to grows. Having said that, when I get to a pool and there is someone 'parked' for the day I exchange a few polite words wish them 'tight lines' and move on. Lets all takes this energy get a bit mad about a bass pro shop north of the city... time to enforce the "support your local fly shop" creed.
  14. its probably better to have called and been wrong than not called at all...?
  15. If you are very new to the sport it might be a good idea to try somewhere like a trib to the sheep or highwood... take a look at barry mitchell's book and grab a backroads map and start exploring... good luck.
  16. adams 14 - best fly ever... have fun with the little guys - they can be a blast!
  17. Jim - Great proposal. I have sent an email indicating my support. Brian.
  18. these guys pretty much taught me to tie.. certainly worth the watch.
  19. I have an ear fairly high up the chain at CP (in the board of directors) and my name carries some weight because of it. If there are track problems along CP lines I would be pleased to pass the concerns on to the company on behalf of all of us. Brian.
  20. I think it is very positive that CP seems concerned about this. Imagine what we could do if we all banded together and contacted the local and appropriate authorities about all our concerns related to rivers and the surrounding environment! I think that if they do get out and fix the tracks it shows industry willing and able to work with the public which is very encouraging!. I am always ready to jump on a cause and help where I can - esp if it is even remotely related to fishing.
  21. They have to call it tresspassing unless there is a controled crossing - no different than jaywalking... we all do it but it may not be safe. I recieved the same response back - I think as concerned citizens we have an obligation to provide me detailed information if possible. I don't say much in the forum as I am the shy loner type of flyfisherman but I would be pleased to contact her directly with the concerns of the group.
