  1. ahhhhh so many bitter bitter things I want to say........... Congrats on the pontoon but it sounds like its her thats the real gift she must be a special lady. Sounds like you may have to do some shopping for something shiny soon (and no I don't mean a chrome Battenkill reel)((I mean a Billy Pate LOL)) Anyways you family men enjoy it Sunday and if you think enough about us Sorry single SOB's you should enjoy it even more.
  2. cool those look good glenbow. Makes for a nice party gift.
  3. LOL heard that one before but it is still a funny one.
  4. I've had a great year for bears so far. I think i have seen atleast a dozen Griz (maybe the same ones a couple times) and 6 or 7 black bears. Luckily no close encounters as of yet knock on wood. The griz have all been in the vicinity of the k lakes and the black bears have been all over. Last week I saw a couple people fishing the kan river on one of the bends near opal. After passing them I saw a griz emerge from the bush maybe 30 yards from the fishermen. I was tempted to turn around and warn them but I realized the bear was crossing likely to get away from them so I figured turning around might make him head back into the bush in their direction so I just kept going and last I saw he looked to be crossing the hwy..... I wondered if the fishermen even knew he was there.
  5. That is not the worst fishing joke I think this one has it beat. My dad told me this one years back and for some reason I always remember it. 2 men are fishing out in a boat for carp. Fishing is pretty slow so they are talking about home renovations projects amongst other things. The first man leans over the side of the boat and his wallet falls out of his breast pocket. His friend rushes over to the that side of the boat and they both watch the wallet sink. Suddenly a carp swims over swallows the wallet and spits it out the wallet sinks a bit more and another carp swallows the wallet and spits it out. This is repeated a few more times until the wallet sinks completely outta sight. The mans friend looks at him and says so whadya pay for the carp to carp walleting? sorry guys I know that was almost as painful as the david hasselhoff video I posted on FFA
  6. wicked fish man I have been waiting to see another big cutty from the lower lake. That fly looks killer for the k lakes as well nice tie. Man I like the k lakes....... gonna have to go cold turkey though I have neglected my other early season favorites enough already....... might be tougher to quit then cigarettes though........
  7. I'd have to agree with that as we on this forum likely only have a couple of guys who are certified guides, or certified casting instructors, or certified tying instructers ect. And these people are certified or trained for a reason they make money doing it. And they rightfully can expect to make money by dispersing this info. This site has a lot of really good regular fisherman who are decent enough to share their experience and techniques ect. Considering they are doing it for free I feel we should not question credentials and instead appreciate the help as they are, in the order of unpaid fly fishermen, professionals. If of course someone is unsatisfied with help supplied for free on here they can easily enough find a certified instructor or guide and pay for it...... But like any online forum and any advice found within them you need to take the advice with a grain of salt as perhaps the way it is explained and the way you comprehend it may be different things. Maybe you need to alter it to fit your situation....... advice is great but practice creates the master
  8. I'm no expert but I've done a bit of fishing..... But I will try not to talk about things I know nothing about
  9. The ducks were the better team congrats to them they deserved the cup. Would love to see an alberta team take it back some time but none of them had what it takes this year. Any trends that show southern states winning the cup is just coincidence. Next season every team will have the chance to make their mark same as this season. Next season I will cheer for Calgary as I always have if they lose out then like this season I will be content to watch the rest of the playoffs simply for the good hockey.
  10. I went to the site and emailed through the contact us section and they emailed me back an address but I have yet to send it. The address is on my email at home (I'm at work) so I am not sure about the address at the moment but just send em an email explaining the problem and they either say yeah or neah right..... my line has literally only been used 6 or 7 times and apart from the split and the break looks like a brand new line so they would be hard pressed to not accept mine back....... not sure how old yours is but they may draw the line somewhere. But its worth a try for sure.
  11. not meaning to bash at all I like airflo but I have had problems with 2 airflo lines as well, one cracked over time and broke and the other split while basically brand new and in the end broke. Both completely different lines...... but on the upside while they lasted they both casted awesome..... I like highend SA they cast nice and they last a while which is all I ask for so I use them for the majority of my fishing. I will be getting my airflo 40 plus line replaced as soon as I dig it out of my gear and send it back in. I was told perhaps I had recieved an old line and that they had a different coating process now or something along those lines. The company has good customer service or atleast they have had with me. And some of their lines are really good the 40 plus was my favorite streamer line and likely will remain that way once I get the new one. I also had a rio line that wore down a bit too fast and a cheap SA line that wore down a bit too fast...... I like to usually give the benefit of the doubt to the line companies as sometimes its the products fault and sometimes its the fishermans but for me the 40 plus line is the only higher end line that ever failed really really quick in like 6 trips or so. The rest have all been more economical lines and I feel should not have been expected to last as long........ I am just happy if I get 6 months outta a line and considering its use it is unfair to expect any line to last forever
  12. sorry I started typing before you posted that dryfly sounds like you were a bit ahead of me
  13. I once dropped a clump of purple marabou on a wet spot on some linoleum (for a couple days) and it left a massive purple stain after trying everything I could think of including those mr clean magic erasers the stuff that finally took it off was OFF bug spray (no deet in that product I believe) it also took a layer of the clear coating on the linoleum which must be similar to some fly line coatings so some of that stuff must be pretty hard on fly lines but likely only if you really really got a good amount on it or repeatedly with small amounts. Dryfly maybe try another stretch of fly line but unstead of just letting it sit run it through a cloth and see if that affects the slipperrness of the fly line..... I couldn't really see it melting a line though without some added heat but I bet some products could do some damage to the coating when coupled with friction....... Not really something I worry much about myself but it would be neat to know
  14. Sorry I meant deadly as in effective or as in deadly to bugs in one of the reviews a hunter claims he watches a tick die on his clothing that was treated with permethrin. sorry it was kinda a confusing statement. the fact that it is not harmful to the skin is another plus
  15. Thanks LK I am one of those who asks questions that I could likely find answers for if I looked a little.
  16. can anyone tell me if its the females that fly and the males do not? Seem to remember hearing that once but have no idea if its true....... just curious
  17. http://www.permethrin-repellent.com/ thats the stuff......sounds deadly
  18. Also Has anyone ever tried permethrin products? Sounds like stuff to have. You actually treat your clothing with it...... heard good reviews but am interested if any of you have tried it
  19. HMMMM....... I just thought about it and I have not worn bug spray all year and have yet to get a mosqui bite....... does this mean I stink? You guys would tell me right? Did pull a RM wood tick outta my hair one day though man do those suckers ever crunch when you smash em against the steering wheel
  20. Really glad to see someone started this thread again great pics everybody especially the 2 sunsets that maxwell and fisher26 posted sweet shots guys
  21. Polarized sunglasses both for protection and for the way they let you see into the water. Most people will tell you these are the most imortant piece of fly fishing equipment and I would tend to agree with them. A net is very helpful for new fly fishers as tailing and controling a fish does take a bit of experience a net will help you land and release the fish as quickly and delicately as possible..... one added note though cheap nets suck and break buy a decent net. 2 setups for a grand...... should be doable if you are talking rods, fly lines, sunglasses leaders, a decent selection of flys.... might push your budget if you want to get waders and felt soled boots in for under 1000 as well but you can start without them and you might even get them with your budget. Perhaps check out Temple Fork Outfitter rods as they are a decent product at a good price with a lifetime warranty...... Some people quite like em some don't but thats true for all companies. Make sure you get a decent fly line if its not a Weight forward or double taper line worth 30 plus bucks chances are it sucks perhaps do some google searchs on choosing a fly line to get more info or ask a shop guy to explain what a fly line does and what the better lines are actually going to do for you. Go to the fly fish calgary archives section which takes you to the old fly fish calgary forum which is due to be locked in a couple weeks and do a search for choosing rods, or lines, or waders, or ect ect and you will likely find some info that applies to your situation. In my opinion you are better off to spend money on gear and terminal tackle then to waste it on fly vests...... they are nice but a backpack is cheap holds more and basically accomplishs the same job I actually prefer a backpack but thats me. Do some reading on tapered leaders and tippit materials try to get an understanding for the reasons and uses for the different products and weights. You will be happy that you took a lesson and further lessons might also be reccomended if you can get em they will shorten the learningt curve. Last take some grammar, spelling and punctuation courses so that in a few years when you answer this question it makes sense unlike mine.
  22. Just thought I would take the time to mention these insects as they are currently out in force in my area. These ants sometimes can be a huge terrestrial hatch that sometimes does not get noticed by many anglers. The ants around canmore at the moment are quite large a size 8-10 dry fly hook although some appear they could pass as a 6 and I have seen them smaller as well at times. It is very likely that regardless of the area you are in these insect will make an appearance soon or in the coming month and could be the ticket for success especially when the very large ones are around..... alas I am stuck at work and cannot go out and fish some. None the less like many ants they often (but not always) work better fished without floatant or very lightly ginked but the flying ants do seem to be a bit more capable of staying afloat then the wingless variety. The ones here at the moment have a body that is dark brown-black 3 segments. Wings are a transparent rusty red and extend past the body and sit almost caddis style when they are on the ground. I believe and correct me if I am wrong these ants do not actually land on the water on purpose and therefore should be fished at times when they are very abundant or in windy conditions as both situations could cause enough of them to end up in the water to turn the fish onto them. The flightless variety are likely around as well and work well fished close to the banks when its windy...... I also sometimes fish an ant as part of a nymph rig when they are very abundant and have taken fish doing so. If anyone wants to chime in with any other usefull info about flying ants or ants in general feel free to do so.
  23. I have a SA dt trout taper and really really like it. Funny thing is I had a buddy pick it up for me and the shop guy didn't want him to spend money on this line...... I dunno why but I guess not everyone likes em so much
  24. nice! i like the new forum looks good guys
