  3. The permanent brain cell damage is the real waste
  4. I guess Brian might have a clue what is going on . It's true one study doesn't mean that much. It was just interesting to hear a different story from someone. Hope you get into some 15lbers+ with your retired buddy. I'll have to make the long drive out your way some time. I'm off to chase antelope with the bow next week. Have fun, Rob
  5. Jack, is there any scientific reports where growth rates between diploids and triploids have been quantified? What you stated prior makes sense and was what I previously believed until someone sent me a Master's thesis disputing this view. In this thesis the results showed there was not a significant difference in growth rates given similar growing conditions. I believe the study said that triploids may live longer ( and therefore grow to a larger end size), but the actual rate of growth was no different from diploids. Here in Alberta we can watch how fast the triploids grow in Bullshead to see if they are any larger after year three and four (if they don't get bonked). It will be interesting to see.
  6. Great shots Steve. Fish around the province are beginning to fear the name of Bobloblaw. Maligne is a bit more scenic than where I was fishing beside the cactus this weekend. Thanks for the post.
  7. Yes , Kevin is a very inventive creator of fine flies. I'd be lost without without him giving me the odd fly to use.
  8. Throat pumps...chironomids, scuds, leeches, the odd chub minnow, a few mayflies, boatmen, beetles. 30,000+ perch down...only a million more to go. We stopped netting in summer due to high water temps and concern about trout getting stuck in the net. Sundancefisher is still seeing large schools of perch, although he says they appear beefier (from 6" to 7"...think of all those grams of flesh).
  9. I don't know...I've been packing away the pellets all summer. My extra bulktatude would certainly allow me to take some line. The lake fish are doing well eating chironomids and scuds...oh ya and all those perch I forgot rainbows evolved with perch.
  10. Check out Scadden pontoons here... http://www.northforkoutdoors.com/ High quality and highly recommended
  11. Don, it's a Remington 870...not Winchester. A gun for all occasions.
  12. SupremeLeader, I was not pointing a finger at you, rather our society in general. I'm as big an energy pig as the next guy. I know a guy who has never owned a vehicle (bicycles only), built his own own solar/wind powered house that is not connected to natural gas, and grows most of his food. His footprint is pretty small compared to mine. He's making an effort to decrease energy consumption/environmental degradation. Maybe he is on a more sustainable road than most of us.
  13. Entertaining thread. Couple of thoughts on the hijack... Everyone raises interesting thoughts. We are a society that voraciously uses/wastes energy. Until there is a shift in our energy appetite there will be continued environmental degradation. Many of us don't like what we see (or ignore what we see) and are quick to voice an opinion. However, from what I see, there is very few people who are serious enough to make major sacrifices to their energy sucking lifestyle. If you don't walk the talk it is hard to take you too seriously. Doing the "right" thing often isn't good for the bottom line. If you think the morals/ethics in the bio-medical research community are significantly better that the energy research community, I believe you could be mislead. People in both areas are just doing jobs and trying to keep that job for next year. Massaging data is an art form that has become much more widespread in the past 10 years.
  14. beauty I hear carp fight well...what was your experience? I have seen some huge ones but never fished for them
  15. Fish like me...I handle quite a few...my fishing buds started calling me a monger (rarely any bonked/fewer sold). We have been exercising fish together for over 20 years now. We thought about a team name "Mongers R US". My friend used to have this button on his vest... "No autographs please". He believes he is the Captain. Things just haven't been the same since he lost his button though
  16. Watched a salmon show the other day that said they could jump 15+ feet.
  17. It's my opinion that when there is ample information and pictures in the regulations that ignorance is not a good enough excuse. It is easy enough to do a little research prior to fishing in a new/unknown area. I have to do it when I go to a new province or state to fish. I don't think it is too much to ask. In addition there has been evidence of people targeting these bulls as they begin to group up prior to spawning. It is a matter of respecting the resource. Respect in general seems to be in a little bit of short supply these days. Is it acceptable to shoot a mule deer with a whitetail deer tag because you have not learned the difference?
  18. Poaching has been very hard on this population. Hopefully there is enough left to count.
  19. I just use a piece of 6lb Maxima at the end of a piece of 12lb Maxima for a leader. It has been known to work and is very hard to break off. For flies under #16 you could try some smaller mono.
  20. Hope you have another great year. Glad to hear the AGFT saltwater version is still producing. Congrats on another poon.
  21. Wasa is east of Kimberley
  22. Nice fish! Did you see any rainbows in that Cutty lake?
  23. Good show. Did you catch any on dries?
  24. You could try something like this: RS 2 emerger http://home.att.net/~ferenc/Tie-rs22.htm
  25. Tess is 4. She can't wait for September to get some more feathers in her mouth. Does Dave "help" you land fish?
