Fishing With Fiberglass Rods
Slanter replied to SilverDoctor's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
That was cool, but I was hoping it might be more informative. Is there something special about fiberglass rods? I've got an old one from my grandfather... Should I pay a little bit of attention to it? -
Picklejar Lakes- Catch And Release
Slanter replied to McLeod's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Well, my opinion (backed up by nothing but pseudo-science) is that if anything this will contribute to smaller fish. I think those lakes are overpopulated, and competition for sparse resources is what stunts their growth. Take away one predator, and you only amplify that situation. That said, the point of those lakes is not to produce big sport fish. So, I think C and R and no bait is probably good for the purpose they serve to Alberta's overall fish conservation strategy. -
I haven't caught many big bulls, but most of the ones I have caught have put up absolutely no fight. Basically rolled over and got dragged in like a log. Made me wonder if they've been caught so many times before that they know the routine

No Flagging Tape Please
Slanter replied to Brookie's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I see your point... But the other day, I was trying to get to a spot, and my directions were something like "park here, go across the river, find the access road". Of course I get there, cross the river, can't see an access road anywhere... But I spot a little piece of flagging tape. Bingo... Path found. But yeah, some of it is pretty ugly. -
Moving To Calgary! Where To Live?
Slanter replied to Slanter's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Yeah, schools for the kids and commute to work are our top priorities. That's why Glamorgan/Glenbrook, etc. was one area we're looking at. I was just wondering if access to the Elbow was a bonus or not -
Moving To Calgary! Where To Live?
Slanter replied to Slanter's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Good to know... Looks like south is the best place for fishing. Is the Elbow upstream of the city really not worth bothering with? I know there's a lot of private land out there, so maybe the access is bad? -
Moving To Calgary! Where To Live?
Slanter posted a topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Well, I got my dream job in Calgary, so the family and I are moving back (from Winnipeg) this summer. I got into fly fishing just as I was leaving Calgary, and then spent 6 years chasing trout, bass, pike, catfish, and whatever else in Manitoba. It's actually a better place for fly fishing than you might think, although it's mostly stillwater fishing. Anyways, we're looking for a place to live, and we've got all sorts of priorities, but I'm secretly thinking about finding a place that will make it easy to get out of town and get on a river. One place we're looking at is Glamorgan... Looks like it would be pretty easy to get out of town on Highway 8. Is there good fishing there along the Elbow and tributaries? Thanks! -
Second that. The Tigers in Twin Lake become very colourful in the fall when they're spawning.

Did you ask anybody about fly fishing at the falls? Did you find anyone who had ever tried?
-
Those falls are very close to town... Maybe a 20 min walk on a very good trail. I have no idea how/when/where to fish those falls, but there are lots of signs on the trail explaining how good the fishing is there (or at least has been in the past). I vote you give it a try and let us know what happens.

wow! bookmarked!

Does that mean that you left two fishes stuck together on a piece of tippet?
-
Too bad they killed it. They could have caught it next year and broken their record again.
-
Does it provide enough floatation to not get sunk by having 2 or 3 weighted nymphs on the line?

500 years is pretty short if you're talking on geological timescales....

I'm from MB, so I do a lot of streamer fishing in lakes... How do you guys recommend streamer fishing for these bulls? Do you drift them, swing them, strip them through pools? Everything?

At Least Some Country Is Doing It Right

Huh, I just bought felt wading boots. I had no idea this was an issue. Can anybody explain how I can reduce my chances of spreading the disease? Maybe wash them in hot water or something?? -

Swadding! Half Wading, Half Swimming, All Sketchy
Slanter replied to PlayDoh's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
From what I know from Kayaking and stuff, I think you're supposed to point your feet downstream. Why? So you don't smash your head off stuff! Plus, you can see what's coming and try to get out of the way. -

Wow, that sounds dangerous! I'm relatively new to fly fishing, and I just got myself a pair of hip waders. They are the stocking feet goretex kind, so I have a pair of wading boots as well. I was wondering if anyone has any safety tips for me. I'm kind of concerned that if I ever fall and fill my waders up with water... how the heck will I get out of them?? I would have to take my boots off! It seems like it could happen pretty easily in a situation like the one described above. Maybe this thread could turn into something about wading safety. I would love to hear some advice about what to be worried about from people with more experience.
