As Riley said a single handed can be nice for dry fly, not so nice with tips, and only on runs where you have room to cast. To me a switch rod is kind of stupid, not the best for Spey casting and also not so great for single hand casting. Companies trying to find one rod that matches two different purposes. To me as useless as a mono board (not skis, and not a snowboard). What is your main steelhead Spey, maybe you want to compliment it with another slightly different one. It's nice to have one set up for dry fly and another set up for sink tips. PK

Cool aide is great for dying. Some really good colors.

I will fish heavier sink tips in the winter as the fish are stacked up in the deeper part of the runs. I will typically not change my tip unless there is drastic speed and depth change. You can vary the depth of your fly many ways without changing the tip. 1 - put on a weighted fly 2- increase the angle of your cast, 90 deg range with an immediate mend (mend dependent on the water you are fishing) 3- after cast take a few steps downstream If none of the above work - change your tip. And keep in mind that if you are fishing deep in the middle of the run - you will eventually hook bottom near the end of your swing. So if fishing that way start to strip in line for the later part (or where you starting to hook bottom in that particular run). PK

CTownTBoyz , couldnt agree more with your take on things. I have come to the conclusion, some people just dont get it. PK

Rightyeegs is right. I dont tail trout but do cradle them under the belly avoiding getting into the bad habit of grabbing the line. PK

Good question. Its is amazing how much info there is on how to cast and catch these beasts but NO info on how to properly land them with a long rod. Once the fish is ready: - I try to keep the fish upstream and out a little deeper from me (downstream you continuosly pull the fish into the shallows which they dont like and will only prolong the fight. And also eventually lead the fish to be beached on the rocks - Bad). - then i try to keep the fishes head out of the water, and position myself directly below it in the deeper water. while doing so holding the rod thus the fish in the same position as before - once in that position I let out a little more line and try surf the fish into me. trying most of the time to tail the fish as opposed to grabbing the line Hopefully this makes sense. Easier demonstrated than described. PK

If you can find your own, why bother with a guide (that you cant afford)?
-
this is Bobs website, http://www.steelheadexcursions.com/ . He isnt the only show in town. I would recommend the bulkley river lodge, http://www.steelheadbc.com/ . They cover the whole river tip to toe, jetboats or rafts, and gourmet food. All the guides are great guys and great fisherman. You will also find that on most rivers up there, outfits only do one week trips. This helps eliminate plans like yours of (guided a couple of days, shown some spots and then do it yourself in those same spots) PK

Anyone Seen This Fly Available Locally?
pkk replied to alan2's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
You are right dont bother taking it into a fly shop. They wont be able to help you find the exact material, or help you find it elswhere, or suggest something that is very comparable. Buy it in the Yakima shop. -

if you can tie a chernobyl why dont you tie one yourself. Or if you take that fly into almost any shop, I'll bet they can reproduce it for you. PK -

Switch Rods And Deep Stillwater Chronie Fishing
pkk replied to creekside's topic in Spey Casters Lounge
you can definitely spey cast on still water. the main difference is that with flowing water the start of your cast is always downstream. With still water it is from wherever you decide to stop stripping your line in. If you are using a sustained anchor cast and feel you are pulling you anchor and not getting things to load, give a a little pause after setting your anchor. this will allow your fly to sink a little and give more stick. I like using the perry poke for casting on a lake. You could also use more of a touch and go cast (scandanavian style). PK -
Happy b-day Max. Sure wish I was your age again. Have a great day (hopefully doing something you like). PK

I think the final outcome is good for albertans. - albertans are recognized as canadians and not grouped in with the rest of the world - no limited time frame on each river - no limited draw - we even benefit from the local only days, sat/sun on most rivers. ( as we are grouped in as local on those days) PK

All of his rods were beasts. And all designed to cast a 80ft garden hose.

[quote name='dutchie' date='Mar 21 2010, 09:54 AM' post='117700' i would highly suggest to all to look up Greg as he's dame good and your money will be well spent for starting out , and the best is he won't break your wallet or just be after your money like some do , i'll just leave it at that , Definately get some lessons. From a professional that has been doing it for more than a couple of years. There are alot of good casting instructors that do it for a living that do classes here in the spring. I suggest one of those. check to see who is certified. PK

If your main reason is the bulkley trip and want to learn to spey cast then get a spey rod. And take some lessons that will at least teach you the basics (well worth your money, lots of different ones in the spring). There is no single rod that will accommodate the pike/bass and steelhead fishing. And if steelheading is the case get a 7wt -8wt between 12.5' to 13'. Whatever rod you do get it is very important to get the right line for that rod (can be confusing). So I recommend getting a qualified shop (lots of spey knowledge). There are a coupe good ones. Brian at Whistler flyfishing is one of the best in the industry when it comes to lining rods. Do get a skagit line as they will increase your learning curve. PK

So, Jeff, yes I can, and will give you some tips. Excuse me, I will assume you arent so familiar with steelhead fishing. - first off summer run steelhead dont spawn until spring and can be in some systems as early as july. so you can get them as early as july and until the system closes (most dec 31). the closure gives the fish approx. 3-4 months without harassment before they spawn. pacific salmon are different. how to increase your chances of catching cleaner (fresh) fish: note there are no guarantees, but one can increase their chances. - fish earlier in the season when the fish that are in havent been there very long (will be less of them in the river. as time progresses thru the season more fish and the bulk of the run will be in the system but this also means that the fish that came in earlier will have already been around for a while and will be colored up). - the water temps are also much warmer earlier meaning more active fish - fish the mainstem river and much closer to the ocean. therefore almost all are clean because they are travelling fish and dont hang around long.Fishing close to the chuck will give you the highest percentage of clean fish. the fish that are higher up in the system have obviously been around longer - fish dry fly or light tips - the fish you get with this method will have had to move to your fly which is more typical of a fresh fish. Early on this is the only way to fish. later in the season you wont get as many fish this way but the chances are they are hotter. There is no guarantee, and no one can say, I only catch clean fresh hot fish. but one can increase his chances. its all a percentage thing. hope this helps Peter

when you put the fox hair fibers into your loop align them so that the but ends are barely in there and then spin. you might also want to remove a little of the underfur (some times it can be a little to thick). when you wrap it forward around your hook pull all the fibers back so you do not wrap over itself. PK

dont bother buying another reel. 150 yrds is lots. if you get that far into it then you will probably have bigger problems.

I fully understand someone not really caring about the issue if they have never had the pleasure of being up there. If you read the proposal you will see it isnt all about the fish. It is about being a CANADIAN and not being treated like one. Plus if you fish in B.C at all, one must be carefull because who knows what kind of precedence it might set. Even if you dont have the desire to fish there it sure would be nice for your kids to have that choice. Turning a blind eye doesnt solve problems. PK
