Popular Post murray
Yesterday, I was asked by my Daughter to come with their school group to release rainbow fingerlings that they had raised from eggs. Two of my Granddaughters were with the school and the third is not in school yet but came with us. My daughter was co ordinating between the Bow Habitat Station (who provided the eggs) and the school. The fish release went well with about 30 very enthusiastic school kids but what really made my day was the fact that I got to watch the faces of all three of my Grand Daughters catch their first fish! The youngest one was first and after she reeled it in, she wasn't interested any more. The middle one was super excited and caught a total of 10 trout in that 12 to 14 inch range. The oldest also caught one but had to go back with her group to discover" pond life". She would have stayed with me longer otherwise. I have wanted to introduce all three to fishing for a very long time. I'm pretty sure at least one of them will fish at any opportunity presented. All in all, it was my best day of fishing ever. And I never caught a fish!

jpinkster
This put a huge smile on my face. There is no greater asset to our fisheries than showing the next generation to have a healthy and respectful relationship with habitat and with fish!

murray
It was an exciting day all the way around. You should have seen the smiles and excitement on the 30 plus school kids. They learned a ton of environmental information. What constitutes a healthy environment for the fish, what other kinds of critters benefit from our waterways etc. We talked about why you don't just throw your apple core in the grass and why you should pick up the little bits of trash lying around. It's a great program and gets the kids very enthused. The school they go to is an inner city elementary school with a wide range of kids from all different backgrounds. I was surprised at how many had never even seen a fish in its natural environment. I asked the lady from Fish and Wildlife how many Calgary area schools were involved in this, I think she said that 16 was the number. If any of the people from FFC are members of their school's Parent Council, I would encourage you to look into this program for your own schools.

scel
Oh goodness. I got all the feels. I never had a chance to go fishing with my father, let alone my grandfather. That is something very special, Murray. I am glad you appreciate it.
