Most Commonly Used Tippet Sizes..

On our southern alberta waters.. what are your most commonly used tippet sizes between 0x - 6x??

 

I.E. - a fella wants to buy 100m spools of the most common sizes, and 25m spools of the others..

3x or 4x gits 'er done for me in most trout situations. If I kept track I'd probably find that I use 3x most often.

When I'm on a bully or pike binge 15lb maxima is my go-to 'tippet'.

3x is my standard for tippet. 8lb vanish for the bow, 6lb vanish for everywhere else

4x is by far the one I use the most, But I also have a spool of 3x on hand for targetting bigger fish as well as some 5 x fluoro for the picky ones.

I use Fluro for all nymphing and many swing rigs. Mono for the surface and sometimes a hybrid of Mono leader/Fluro tippet, for some swing presentations, where the last couple of feet are fluro tippet, to keep the fly under the film, untill the leader tightens up and rises on the dangle.

5x Fluoro most of the time and 4x mono for dries. I might go with a thicker flouro if I tie on streamers.

I carry 2X-5X in mono and 3X-5X in fluoro on my lanyard, as well as spools of 14lb Trilene and 30lb Maxima in the vest.

I carry 3X, 5X, and 6X. 3X for the Bow (I mostly nympth), and 5X/6X for everywhere else (Highwood, Liv, creeks, and mountain lakes).

On the Bow, typically 2X to the worm and 3X to the bottom two. I will sometimes drop to 4X. I will use 6 lb Vanish from time to time, but frankly don't like tying knots with it. The 2X, 3X combo has been killer lately.

i agree with rick, i love vanish, but you gotta watch your knots..not my favourite for night fishing, as you really gotta watch to make sure the knot 'took'..lost many a fly thinking it took, and it didnt

I use 10lb Vanish and then 3x and then 5x for nymph rigs which is mostly what I fish.

If you boys like the Vanish, you should check out the Maxima 100% Flourocarbon..I used vanish for a bit and went on to Maxima. about the same price.

I start with:

1X for streamers (~12-15 lb floro)

3X for nymphs

5X for dries

 

Be careful about buying too much tippet. The stuff does not age well.

Where in Calgary are you getting Maxima Flurocarbon?...it is absolutly great stuff...4x and 3x are the size's I use most of the time in fresh water and in salt water 6 and 8lb Maxima Fluro.
