ULTRAlite Posted August 26, 2007 Share Posted August 26, 2007 Heyo - new poster here. I'm an albertan by birth - born and raised about 3 hours east of Calgary. Have loved to fish and hunt all my life (have family to thank for that), but just starting to get serious with fly fishing recently. When I was 12, I started on a the same fly rod that my father and grandfather learnt with. Until 2 months ago, I was still using it (now and then - a definate hack!). I've hung that one on the wall now and upgraded to new technology - WOW what a difference. I'M HOOKED. Fly tying is the next venture... I've got the basic tools and materials as I've been tying jigs for a while. Even been repairing some of my chewed up flies already. I've had a pretty decent summer so far - catching my first White and Brownie on a flyrod. Really looking forward to a productive fall. Next summer I wanna try getting a Pike on the fly... Love the Avatar - Thanks! - from icefishing last winter I love reading fishing reports and looking at pictures of big fish - Me too, I'm an admitted Fish porn lover try the weaslehead under the foot bridge - Will keep that in mind - probably a hot spot in the spring hey? or chestermere if you have a float tube or pontoon - no pontoon, I do have use of a canoe and a float tube is on the list - which brings us back to the deep wallet comment!!! ladystrange Posted August 28, 2007 Share Posted August 28, 2007 the few times i have fished the weaslehead, my fishing partner and i have been the only ones, so i guess it depends on the time of day. the last time was kind of funny, he was using a spinning rod - no idea why, something about refinishing guides and hadn't gone to pick up his fly rod or something, but anyhoo... he cast first with a squid like thing, about six casts, dont get a hit in 6 casts, move on is his mantra, so he's working the water, and i'm sitting back just watching, fully expecting him to catch something because he usually does. but nothing for him so he moved upstream a 100 ft and starts chucking his hardware again. i move to where he had been fishing and cast my god awful, creation of green and yellow maribou, sage green tinsle and yellowblack squirl hair. and cast number 3 (once i got my line out a bit) BAM!! FISH ON! i hear from behind me, like i said, 6 casts, just not my 6 casts. lol it was a nice 20inch ish pike. a little skinny though, poor thing kept trying to slide out of my hands, i ended up with pike slime and muddy silt all over me. guess u had to be there. farther down the stream is a beaver lodge and a submerged log, i've been told that both will hold fish, but it was a hot day in july so nothing else moved. as for chestermere, you can fish from shore, canoe will do. i caught my first pike on a fly there last summer from shore. i see most people chuck hardware. try under the causeway/bridge, in front of town hall but the boat launch, and the park on the northeast side of the lake. if you have a canoe, try the south east side by the private boat awnings. if you want to head out, let me know, i have wanted to get out there again, but havent had a chance since may.
