  1. The nearest open field works just as well. Put a leader on the end of your line, tie a bit of wool to the end of the leader and cast away. You don't need water to practice casting. In fact, it's probably better to practice in an open field because you'll be concentrating on your cast rather than catching fish, plus you won't have to worry about snagging on trees or getting your fly caught on bottom. Don't forget to wear some form of eye protection, especially if you have a fly on.
  2. I just did a quick search of the NFR forum for the word "warming" and none of the threads are closed. Oddly enough, the majority of the threads were started by the same person.
  3. As opposed to the same people who start yet another one of these threads every time the mercury drops or it snows? How many of these threads do we really need? If someone started a redundant topic on something fishing related everyone would tell them to use the search function because there are already a bunch of other threads about the same topic. Just sayin'.
  4. Yeah, using fine wire for the loop would make a big difference. You'd want to go with as small a diameter pin as you could too.
  5. I agree. Big streamers with a sink tip line could be a little much for a 6wt depending on casting ability. Add some wind into the mix and it gets a bit tougher. I used to use an 8wt single hander as a dedicated streamer rod for the Bow.
  6. That sounds to me like it would work. I just wonder if the material or thread wraps would be too loose after you slide the pin out.
  7. If you took a lesson you should get out and practice your casting while it's all still fresh in your mind.
  8. I found that kept the hook too close and my rhea would often foul on it.
  9. Where did you find it? The last issue of the Drake actually had a really favourable review of it so I've been meaning to pick it up. Funny how they're the only mag I've seen that has had the balls to recommend a competitor.
  10. The truth about H1N1 is that they're sensationalizing it to convince everyone to get the vaccine. That's their cover to inject the tracking chips in everyone. Fortunately a good tin foil hat will block the signal. Seriously it's called cya. The media already made a huge deal out of it so if govts do nothing and a lot of people die they can kiss their reelection hopes goodbye.
  11. I've been using the Sharkskin running line on one of my spey rods - lots of shooting and stripping line - and haven't had anything close to that. It can make my fingers a little raw, but that's it. Think of how many times you scrape/nick/cut your hands in a regular day of fishing (hook in the finger anyone?) then stick your hands in the water. I don't think many of us have gotten blood poisoning from that. Sounds like a unique case to me.
  12. Maybe they all live in cities with lots of crack and meth labs and the fumes are causing them to post stuff like that.
  13. Take a look at Wanny's post in the tying thread... http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?...st&p=103188 Brad, I like how recent those pics are since you can read the first post in this thread on your monitor.
  14. Nice bench! Might want to take the pic down before you get flooded with requests from people wanting you to build them one too.
  15. Sounds like similar fishing to the Kanektok in Alaska. The Deneki lodge up there is over $5000 USD per person per week plus airfare. I'm guessing Kamchatka would be around the same price and more expensive for airfare.
  16. Those are nice and buggy looking. Should work well as both a hopper and stone.
  17. Yes. Tell them when and where it occurred, the plate number, and a description of the guy. At the very least when they know that someone is doing something wrong they can keep an eye out for their vehicle or at that spot in the future.

  19. Not too much material on those intruders. Dubbing or polar chenille, tinsel or wire, schlappen, marabou, lady amherst, krystal flash, and rhea (the only expensive thing). Ostrich can be substituted for rhea and it's much cheaper. You don't need a spey rod to cast intruders and stuff, it's just easier on your arms if you chuck them all day. Anyhow, this thread isn't to debate single vs double handed rods (that's already been done to death). Nice ties everyone. Keep 'em coming. I tied some chironimids... Then got incredibly bored with them (slightly ADD) so I tied another intruder.
  20. Came across my RSS feed from cnet news. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-10372447...ag=2547-1_3-0-5
  21. http://calgary.en.craigslist.ca/trp/1373376861.html And just in case it gets removed, here's the ad text in full: Astronaut Needed (Northern Alberta) Date: 2009-09-14, 3:52AM MDT Reply to: job-nypzm-1373376861@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] Astronaut needed for experimental flight to Titan. I have been working on this project now for near 40 years and am afraid I'm no longer fit enough to go. My secret space craft is the result of my professional experience and imagination while serving the U.S. military in advanced aeronautics as a scientist. The craft harnesses a revolutionary propulsion system and its fuselage is fabricated with the most advanced material. While considerably safe, I am certain you will make it safely to Titan but there will not be enough fuel to get home. This is for someone unique that has always wanted to see the universe first-hand and has perhaps a terminal view on life here at home. Here's your shot at romantic history. Must be: -physically fit. -mentally sound. -over the age of 18. -a dreamer. -a believer. -not afraid of heights. -not afraid of extreme conditions such as speed, pressure, heat, etc. -brave. -no taller than 5'10 and relatively slim. -good eye-sight & hearing. -manual dexterity (although the craft is largely cpu controlled). -OK in cramped conditions for long periods of time. Location: Northern Alberta Compensation: $25,000 CASH. This is a contract job. Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster. Please, no phone calls about this job! Please do not contact job poster about other services, products or commercial interests. PostingID: 1373376861
  22. Yeah, all of those rods are pretty high quality. I think it'll come down to personal preference. Might have trouble finding the Loop AEG 696, though since they're out of production.
  23. I tried that Tyger stuff and didn't like it because it was too thick and I couldn't change the hook after the fly was finished. I use 80lb Berkley FireLine, though lots of guys use Rio Slickshooter. As long as you use something that keeps the hook from dangling I think you're good. Miguel Morejohn used to have a great video showing how to tie an intruder including the stinger hook but he seems to have taken it off his site. Here's a step by step: http://www.isomedia.com/homes/celestev/ins...st_intruder.pdf
  24. Well, the weather sucks so I figured it was time to get down to tying while watching some college football. Whipped up some intruders and wrapped some wire worms. On to some midge nymphs next. Green and black Chartreuse Hot pink and purple So what's coming off everyone else's vises?
