  1. There are a lot of coyotes in Calgary and quite a few have little fear of people. There's a pack that regularly hunts on the berm behind my place and they don't run away when I go out on the balcony to try and scare them off. They're also very organized hunters forming a wedge with the one at the top of the hill in front and each lower one a bit behind it. I carry a big stick with me when I walk my dog for this exact reason. And there were two of them that attacked a couple kids in the city about 4 years ago. I remember they were tracked and shot right under the Centre Street bridge.
  2. Agree with Tungsten - BRBs, woolly buggers, and all that. Might have some luck swinging intruders and clousers as well.
  3. I'm not a doctor, but I play one on internet forums...
  4. I think you just showed your own ignorance with that statement. There's nothing in the original post to imply where this guy was from. There are lots of us around here that are from elsewhere and follow the regs. That really sucks about the tire. I agree that you shouldn't tell poachers that you called them in. This time it was only a tire that was slashed - next time it could be worse. Good on you for making the effort.
  5. No more than overhead casting one.
  6. Only a 3-5 hour wait at the clinics... http://www.calgaryherald.com/health/Calgar...4840/story.html
  7. I fished today with a 6wt 99 courtesy of Country Pleasures. Really weird to cast at first. No matter how hard we tried we couldn't make it cast a tight loop on an overhead cast. Even with lots of double hauling we couldn't tangle up the nymph rig. At first we had a 6wt Orvis Wonderline on it for overhead casting, but after a while we put a 40+ on it. I feel the 40+ is a terrible overhead casting line, but when we single hand spey cast it the thing launched some serious bombs. Like cast further than you could fish it distance. I think we were launching it as far as some guys do with a two-handed rod. The extra length made it easy to mend line and high stick, but without being so long that it was unruly or too heavy. We also got into a few fish with it and it never felt like a broom stick. Can't wait to pick one up when they ship in November.
  8. Actually just picked a copy up today at Fish Tales. I think they had one more left.
  9. He doesn't have spey casting figured out either. Maybe if he took that bobber off...
  10. Exactly. I think licensing would be good to ensure that guides have insurance, CPR, pay taxes on income, and the sort of thing that was mentioned earlier, but my taxes better not be going towards the escalation of a childish turf war. However, I'd rather see the money spent on reclaiming banks and habitat, enforcement, and studies like the current one on didymo. Next thing you know this group of licensed guides will be building a power bloc to lobby for quality water studies like the Skeena AMP (gotta get them back for that one too, right?) that only benefit them and not the fishery or the regular angler.
  11. I consider all flies to be lures. A definition: something that tempts or is used to tempt a person or animal to do something Describes any fly (dry, nymph, streamer, emerger), spoon, rapalla, etc. doesn't it? I think describing a fly as something other than a lure is just another way for the elitists to make themselves feel better. Always thought fly fishing just meant you were casting the line rather than the lure regardless of terminal tackle. Rick, I guess we aren't elitists.
  12. Wow, if the primary motivator is revenge then all I can say is grow the **** up. That makes you sound like little kids on the playground plotting revenge because someone wouldn't let you play with their ball.
  13. Received this today: Only skimmed it so far and it isn't looking too good. Wonder how much money they've blown on this whole thing so far.
  14. I don't know about that. I have a 12' 6wt Loop Goran Anderson (definitely a European rod) and use a 420 compact skagit on it. My friend Al has a 12'6" Deer Creek 5/6 and he uses either a 420 or 450 compact skagit (can't remember which). The biggest difference between the two rods is the action - I prefer faster action rods while he prefers more traditional medium to medium-fast action like DCs and Burkies. The Vapor is a fast action rod, while the Meiser you have on order is more of a traditional action rod - Meiser had a hand in designing the Deer Creek too. That'll be your biggest difference. If you like the Meiser then the reason you preferred a heavier line on the Vapor is probably that it slowed the rod down to an action more suited to you. I think it comes down to the rod's grain window, action, and caster preference. As for what weight rod is overkill, both my Goran and my friend's Deer Creek have been bent right over by Bow river browns and rainbows. I wouldn't mind fishing a 4wt two-hander for trout, but the only one I've tried - the Decho 4119 - is too slow for my preference.
  15. I know where you can get t-shirts with something almost identical on them... http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/me...t?p=51547-0-078 It's a great idea Brian, but the problem with simple logos is that most of them have already been used and even one that's slightly different makes you recall where you first saw it (which is why simple logos work so well). I'm not artistic at all, but my suggestion would be the silhouette of a classic fly like a caddis or adams. Either that or ask Brian Niska if his brother would be interested in designing a logo for the site. Still one of the best fly fishing logos out there in my opinion.
  16. I'd match the rod more for the size of fish. There are more 4, 5, and 6wt two-handed rods coming out for trout fishing like the Dec Hogan Echo series, TFO Deer Creeks, and Sage Z-Axis (pricey). One thing I've learned is that if I fish a skagit setup with sink tips I can tie streamers with little or no weight to them and instead use different sink tips to control my fly depth, so the size of the fly isn't as much of a concern.
  17. So I guess my question is more about enforcement of whatever licensing system is put in place. I can charge a couple of guys as a guide then claim that I'm out fishing with my "buddies" if questioned. If we all deny that money exchanged hands then how do you prove I was guiding? I'm in favour of some sort of license and agree with all of the requirements Teck posted, just wondering about enforcement particularly when you consider how thinly stretched the CO's are to check regular angler licenses.
  18. The ones on the right are a lot skinnier than the ones with the white beads. I've had roughly equal luck with both and found it depends on the fish's mood, phase of the moon, and alignment of the stars (in other words I have no clue why they take one over the other on different days).
  19. Apparently Sylvia Grinnell falls is the hot spot...
  20. I don't get it. Pretty sure treble hooks are legal in Alberta. Edit: never mind. missed the barbs.
  21. I thought it looked pretty nice at first, but with the stain it looks really high end. Great job Mike.
  22. Really interesting. Hairwing patterns using synthetics instead of hair?
  23. Tied some more midge nymphs, four colours of copper johns, two colours of DNA clousers, and some quick leeches. All the nymphs are on scud hooks. I think they look better that way and the wider gape should make for better hook sets and fewer LDRs.
  24. If it does can I blame it on global warming?
  25. Hasn't been one in ages. I think ideally one or more shops or manufacturer reps should get involved to do a proper clave or something. Hmm, Fish Tales, Country Pleasures, and Southbow are all site sponsors and each carry a variety of spey rods and lines...
