  1. You don't absolutely need waders, you can fish from shore , an awful lot of people I see fishing are standing where the fish are. barnes has a good point about fishing in winter though. I use mine more for crossing short channels to get to spots, keeping dry in the rain and keeping the bum dry when siting for lunch. I often just wear rubber boots.
  2. Nice find, most of the old gut leaders where made of silkworm. It's a totally limp leader with so little memory it will forget your name after every cast. I have fished with silkworm gut leaders, tied to (eyeless hooks) gut triple wetfly casts, certainly not on a regular basis but for the experience. The material could only be drawn down to about 4X. It also had a memory problem, which required it being soaked and or kept wet in a leader tin. It kind of looked like a "slinky" when you first went to use it. And when making knots if it was dry, it was rather brittle. although they should be used as nice collectors Items. Post pictures, it's fun to see and collect.
  3. How about something like this.
  4. Those are great Jay. I tagged them to watch again during those winter days when I'll with it was spring.
  5. Ah a trick question, non of the above its a fish fart.
  6. When stocking foot waders first came out we usually used hiking boots in those days. The boots didn't last long with constant water exposure, and the soles where like you had skates on. Felt was a boon. There's nothing like buying a product built for it's task.
  7. Didn't know you where a hairdresser?
  8. think good thoughts... fly fishing related

  10. Got to convince the wife to move to a lake community.
  11. I always add enough backing to fill the reel nicely. Mind you there are times when I felt there wasn't enough like when I was visited by that Sturgeon. He was very greedy with the line.
  12. Well in the end the conformance kept me so busy I was unable to sneak away. The bad thing is I had a view of the river from my room. Pure torture.
  13. Dutchie is away this week chasing Steelhead. I have a Meiser Highlander 4 wt and absolutely I love it,use it a lot on the bow. Give me a shout If you want to give it a try.
  14. pm me you serial number
  15. It would depend on the model. Some where only 50 other in the thousands. Do you have a model you are curious about?
  16. Have quite a few silk lines some vintage and some new. My oldest silk was my Grandfathers bought in 1928. Wonder how many modern lines would that long. I fish a number of bamboo rods but don't presently own a Bamboo Spey, had a few in the past good and bad. I am looking though. Is it a spliced rod, most of the lighter better ones are. Your line rating in silk should be written on the side of the rod usually in letters like "G2AF". If you could look for that I can make a recommendation for a manufacturer of lines. The big three are Phoenix Lines, Thebault and Terenzio Silk Fly Lines. If you want you can pm me and we'll chat. By the way Dutchie is chasing Steel for the next week.
  17. No ballets for me where I needed to vote. I was not impressed that I could not take advantage of my legal right. Just like a third world country, not good.
  18. Thanks I'll hit hit the shop, hoping to have some sneak away time from the conference.
  19. I have a few vests that I really like including on old Orvis and a two year old Gillie and a few others, although I usually carry a Hardy bag. But won't suggest on to you. What you should do is take your fly boxes to a local fly shop shop, try on a couple of vests loaded with your stuff and make your decision based on that.
  20. With all due respect my results over the last 55 years tying and fishing have been different, I have found nochange in hooking and holding power in up, straight and down eyes. This as long as the knot is well tied for the hook. Most Steelhead and salmon hooks are up eyed with solid holding power.
  21. Am at the Fairmont Banff Springs for three days later this month. Am curious if anyone has fished the bow and adjacent waterways to the hotel lately.
  22. Good Wife with a Good Heart, Good Family, Good Health, Good Friends, Good Trout, and Great Hatches And good God, you give us great a life.
  23. Have very Happy Birthday Greg, have a dozen of those special streamers for you we need to get together for coffee or fish.
  24. That is the saddest statement I have heard. We have lost may very good highly knowledgeable members, who at one time gave much of themselves to this forum and its members, and posted here on a regular basis. Many where driven off my mindless dolts who have no idea about common courtesy and decency speaking like children trying to break into an adult conversation. Very sad indeed. Please treat other members with respect and think a bit before pressing the "post" button.
  25. Neither, it's the guy who poaches a dozen.
