  1. Environment Canada has some historical data, but it is somewhat limited. You may be able to find what you are looking for here. At the bottom there is a Historical Station search page that may be able to help you.
  2. Was out at Policeman's last night, they have a bunch of no parking and open excavation signs on the road after the parking lot right now. Was walking on the bank upstream of the parking lot and it looks like they have started the work on it.
  3. Done and done. Really short survey, if you want a quality trout fishery closer to Calgary, take this survey to show our support for the idea!
  4. I attempt this all the time, but never seems to work
  5. Call it in. Just this past weekend I saw some containers that looked like sardine (or some other type of fish) tin cans at a spot close to Longview along the Highwood, wish I could have called it in myself.
  6. Anybody ever have any luck with mouse patterns on any local rivers before? These sorta videos really get me excited to tie some of those bad boys, but haven't had any luck the few times I have tried them.
  7. So how long do we need these lower temps and rain until we see the rivers start to cool down?
  8. That is a great point Toolman. While we are at it, I'd like to throw out the idea of putting restrictions for water flow change to be a certain percentage of the flow rate per hour (something like 10-20% perhaps?). This would hopefully alleviate those sharp spikes or drops in water flow we tend to see on the Bow River. I do not have any knowledge of how the dams work, but there must be some way to gradually lower the water level, rather than drop it significantly for a couple hours then pop it right back up.
  9. Any fly shop in town will likely be able to find you a guide for the day. My personal favorite is Fish Tales, but there are many others out there (Country Pleasure, Bow River Troutfitters, etc...).
  10. I have had some success on a Kaufmann stone pattern, and have heard Jimmy Legs produce pretty well in the Bow as well. I haven't tied them myself yet, but a quick google search produces some how tos on tieing them.
  11. I don't own one but I am thinking of getting one and will throw in my two cents. The head mount will probably give you the best POV perspective, but will also look the goofiest (IMO). If I end up getting on, I plan on mounting it on a monopod to try and get some good shot of the fish underwater, or hopefully even coming up to take the fly.
  12. Griffiths gnat is my go to for midge imitations, looks like a big clump of them together. Works well even in the summer months as well.
  13. Same for me, except it is a google sheets spreadsheet. Don't keep track of my skunk days, although maybe I should. I am curious how many fish people catch a year? I am at 63 for the year as of right now, which is a pretty big improvement over the 30 something I caught last year.
  14. When is it safe to start targeting them again? I wanted to this weekend, but now I realize that might not be a good idea.
  15. Where was it taken? As far as the species, I have no idea personally.
  16. I have had my first couple of experiences random camping this year, and I have to say, I was impressed. The sites I stayed at were clean, free of garbage, and those that camped nearby were very respectful. I hope they do not put too many restrictions on it, as it is something I hope to do for years to come. As for the OHV, I have not run into many of those while out, although me and a friend were disheartened when we wanted to fish fallentimber one day, and there was a big motorbike event happening, so we went out to panther instead. Its not just OHV messing up the rivers though. In August, I was staying near the Panther river, and there was a guy who drove his truck across the river to access what looked like a trail. Needless to say, the people horseback riding laid into us fisherman as we were walking by it mistaking the truck for ours, but glad to see people out there looking out for the rivers. Hopefully this regulation goes smoothly and doesn't hinder those who respect the environment too much.
  17. At least you get a view from your place of work! But then again, that could be the problem...
  18. Flows are back up as of around 1:00 this morning.
  19. What about Beavers? I see them all the time by my favorite run on the Bow, and they always seem to eye me up and splash their tale at me. Always wondered if they would ever show aggression and attack, anyone ever seen something like that?
  20. I am looking to hook into my first Bull this weekend, looking for a good place to go. I am not interested in the Livingstone or Oldman area, as I have heard those areas get extremely busy in the summer months. Was thinking the Kootenay River in BC in Kootenay National park, but was curious if there are any better streams nearby (Calgary area) for Bulls?
  21. Don't think you would really be able to cast with it attached to a fly line, but could see it being pretty cool to use when sinking a chronie to the bottom of a lake. Only 480p though...
  22. Welcome! Don't get discouraged with the Bow, its not an easy river. It all makes up for it when you finally have a good night on it! I have been skunked on around 60-70% of my outings this year on the bow (only my second year fly fishing), but those couple times I hooked into fish, boy was it worth it all in the end.
  23. Thanks for the help guys. I have taken half a dozen trips out to various creeks (highwood, racehorse, etc...) and had a lot of success on the dries on those creeks, but when it comes to the bow I am stumped. I think the guide option will be the best bet, so I will be looking around for that. Thanks again!
  24. Hi All, I started fly fishing last year, got myself a beginner TFO NXT rod (5/6 weight) and fished a lot of dries on smaller streams. Tried the bow river numerous times with no luck on the fly rod. I am currently trying to decide between two options: 1) Buy a new 7 or 8 wt rod to toss streamers or 2) Buy a new reel (or just spool) with a sink tip line on it for nymphing and streamers with the 5/6 wt. My question is would buying a heavier weight rod help with tossing streamers out, or is it just my technique with the 5/6 wt? If i did get the new rod, would it still give me good results (compared to the 5/6 wt) while nymphing? Pretty much my goal is to have a viable option to nymph or streamer with, as I have found I have been having problems casting out a weighted nymph rig (or just getting the nymphs to the bottom without the weight), would the sink tip line be hard to cast too? Thanks for any and all help.
  25. At first, I was striking on the rise. Then i decided to see what was happening, and they would approach it, but it doesn't seem like they take it. Its as if they are nudging it over and over. Ill go out and buy some smaller BWO, see if that makes a difference.
