  1. Well said Missing the bow. I know and fish with that certain individual also and he is a hell of a good fisherman and I can't recall him ever telling me about keeping any fish. He mainly swings flies like the rest of us and would probably school most of us on this board. There aren't many centerpinnners on the bow but you guys sound like your classifying all centrepinners as poachers. No wonder the fishing community thinks we are a bunch of elitists. As soon as you see someone not flyfishing and catching decent numbers, you, check that, some of you instantly assume that something illegal must be happening. The guy that MTB and I know has a great understanding of CP and covers a ton of water with his method so maybe that's why he does so well. Plus, I've never had a problem getting a hold of the regs at any can tire, maybe check he fishing section and you'll see them. That's a load of hoo-wee
  2. Me and a buddy ran into a couple of guys below Policemans this early spring at the hole below power line and asked the guy how much room he wanted. He asked the guy he was fishing with and the guy wanted "about 50 yards upstream to that corner and about 50 yards downstream." We were ok dude and went downstream and before we left the guy with stated he was a guide on the river and when come back up stop by and he'll give us one of his cards. Never did go back for his card. We we wrong to be a little peeved at this guy or is that acceptable?
  3. Don't expect to stay for a long time. Usually 2 hours for my 2 boys, same age and it's time to go home. They might become disinterested rather quickly and start playing around. I usually watch their rods and call them when they get a fish. I use spinnig rods for them and dare I say BAIT. I found they can use the open face better than closed face reels. If it's their first time or they are learning to cast, I bent the hook or removed it without them seeing for their safety and mine. I also bought one of those $10 tackle boxes from can tire. Bring a net because mine love using the net to discover the lek bottom. Good luck and remember you're out there for them and bring loads of patience. PS Don't forget the camera
  4. Dryfly you hit it on the nose. Nothing drives me more crazy than holding the door or giving your seat to a lady on the bus and they act as if it were your duty to do that and no thanks given. I'll thank a guy or lady when they hold the door for me when entering a store. I want to know what happen to the wave when you let someone in or make a space in traffic for the person to get in your lane. I believe it boils down to the lack of respect people show these days to each other.
  5. Fisheries Management Branch of Sustainable Resource Management developed a discussion paper, with input from the Provincial Fisheries Management Round Table, on the subject of Quality Stocked Trout Fisheries in the province. According to the Quality Stocked Fishery Survey Results September 2008 question 6, 55% of those surveyed believe that Winter angling should be available on quality stocked trout fisheries as long as the goals of quality fishery can still be. It did not sound like most of the ice auger crowd were using bait on Bullshead or on Police according to reports on this site either. AND Garlic marshmallows don't work that good either 1/64 oz jigs tied with olive marabou are killers when fishing for rainbows though the ice
  6. Maybe you guys are misinterpreting what I said or I misinterpreted what adc meant. I'm not against zero limit lakes, I'm against trying to designated a lake as a fly fishing only lake. After rereading Al's post I believe he meant to change the regs to a zero limit. I thought he was put off by the method of angling. My bad
  7. And while we are making the changes to the regs can we make that only people that only use Sage fly rods can fish it. You've helped changed the regs from a popular put and take bait lake to a limited harvest no bait lake and you're still not happy. I guess what you're saying if the fly anglers can't fish it, other methods shouldn't either even if they are following the regs. That's a bit of an me and methods only are right attitude
  8. I think this was a great change to the regs. Now those buck bios who think that they'll throw some perch in this lake and come back in a few years and reap the reward now have their reward removed. This is a move by the government to combat those anglers or bucket bios that are doing this for harvest reasons soley. Places like Cow are a popular perch fishery now were once a great trout fishery. Too bad you can not keep any from Cow now, but were there really any quality fish coming out of there now in good numbers? I think this was a bold move and maybe the only move the Government had left to combat these clowns. If there is no reward why risk getting caught?
  9. Whack them in the head right away, process them (gut or fillet were size not n issue) as soon as possible and keep them cool. I can't believe the way folks teat the trout out of Arbour Lake. Some just throw them on the grass or in a bag in the heat of day alive and and let them bake in the sun. I'd rather eat my socks after a day of wet wading below the treatment plant than eat those fish. The only fish I've kept in the last couple of years have come from Spray lakes after ice out. I'd never keep a fish out of a pothole lake in the summer. They tend to taste really muddy and their flesh is not firm as in the winter. The worst fish I ever ate came from the bow about 25 - 30 years ago. My dad caught a large rainbow from below the city. My grandmother was in town and we thought we'd treat her with this great catch. One taste and everyone spit it out. I don't know why the poachers on the Bow take the fish home. Worse fish ever
  10. Got a Norvise at Christmas and won't go back. The added bonus of emailing the manufactor himself is well worth the money. I needed the arbour for spooling the thread, emailed Norm and he sent one to me no extra charge. Another bonus is that I mounted it to a thick board and now I can sit on my couch and watch my shows while tying flies comfortable. I'm not stuck at my bench tying anymore. It takes a little to get use to but I'm 250 + flies since Christmas and I love it
  11. I loved bouncing stoneflys down the upper bow when I was younger and would do it today if it was legal. That was some great action
  12. What percentage do you folks believe that you are using bead headed flies over non bead headed flies. I notice with my tying lately that less and less flies are of the non beaded variety. Other than the worm, 80% of my flies fished are now of the beaded variety.
  13. Thanks for bringing this up silverdoctor. Just got a batch I order online never thought to test them till I read your post. To make a long story short they are being sent back. They don't nearly compared to Mustad and Tiemco hooks when I bend them with a small pair of pliers. They snap easily. You get what you pay for I guess
  14. Thanks Doc, I'll look at these in the next couple of days. Appeciate the help
  15. Do you guys know where a guy can get more tips and tricks on the web other than Norms youtube videos which are the same as the ones included on the cd when you buy the vise. I got one for christmas and can't seem to find much on the web. Never tied on one before but after emailling Norm, he said as long as you go in with the perception that you're not a pro right away you'll be ok. So far I love the vise but I don't crank out the flies just yet.
  16. Gary if your lab had a little gray on the chin I would of swore you stole my dog. Here is one of him with a good friend of mine.
  17. Got me a Nor-vise. With 3 young kids, I'm waiting until they go to bed tonight to give it a spin.
  18. As a former graduate from the conservation enforcement program at LCC and worked in the field for a few seasons, like everyone says, just because you don't see them, they are around. I had the pleasure of working one of my seasons as a STEP officer in Calgary and trust me, these guys want nothing more than to get out in the field and catch people angling illegally. There is just a ton of other things to do also that do not include checking anglers. I was told the exact same thing by the senior officers that the folks here are saying, if a guy has about $500 worth of equipment on him, he probably buys his license. Chances are if you are near to a spot that F&W park their vehicle they may check you if it's a slow day, and if your a bit of a walk they won't bother and they'll go looking for the fellow with the $20 Mohawk rod and reel sitting on his case of beer. One fellow we watch for about 20 mins from the top of Bearspaw dam used his rod and his three daughters was doing pretty good below us until we confronted him. He denied it until we showed him the notes and where we were watching from. He got a fine. GM
  19. Looks like that cut has been caught before. Check out what's left of his lip on the first pic
  20. Best way I found is to use a roll cast. If there is any sign of trouble stop and check your line. That helps avoid huge tangles
  21. That's a sweet fly. I'll have to give her a go on a local lake.
