Curious About Kanaskis Area
northfork replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
I've heard the stories.. This was back 2007-2008, but still to this day the biggest cutt I have ever seen was dead floating along the shore in Lower K in springtime. I won't even write how big it was for fear of people not believing it. Wish we had camera phones back in those days. I remember when the upper lake produced very large rainbows too. There's still some good trout in both lakes. Fishing partner caught a 28" rainbow out of Lower last spring. -

I can agree with your points, but also do not forget these lakes only exist because of TransAlta. There may come a day where the dams are removed. -
Log Haul On North Fork To North Ram Road
northfork replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
That's sadly what it's come to. The only logging outfit who is somewhat courteous and friendly is the Coleman bunch working on the Fall Creek compartment. They are good guys.Keep making examples for them its the only way some of these tools are gonna learn. I don't care what they do on their private roads but the second they touch the north fork or the trout creek roads they need to play nice, theyre provincial roadways and they don't have any exemptions to allow for them to be dicks. I have given a few of those guys some choice words the last couple months over the radio for not calling or not playing fairly. A fellow ran me off west of thunder mountain into a steep ditch. Didn't even stop to give me a tug back onto the road or ask me if i could get out. Nice guy, And EMT I agree there is not a lot of people calling KMs. Seems to just be us oilfield guys. You might not be hearing the loggers call cause they never switch off the ram haul channel. They got a repeater on the ram road off the mainline so they can all hear each other from the bottom of the gap to the highway. Makes sense for them, very unsafe for the other industries and general public at large. If I had it my way I really wish that the haul guys would flip over to Ladd 2 whilst on the north fork road between the Gap Lk and Mainline to call their kms but they don't. They only care about where the other loggers are. Luckily for me I have a feature where I am able to monitor two channels at once and it's been a blessing working up in that area the last two years. Construction project will be a while yet, the contractor who won the tender grossly underbid it and there will be a lot of stop and starts due to financials and weather. Next one is re-decking the bottom ram bridge just above the north saskatchewan confluence and that one will take a while and effectively lock the public out from the east access. Sunpine doesn't like the public on their mainline road, so next year or whenever they start the bridge work it will be a long miserable drive to go fish the N. Ram. The 2500 is taking a beating this year. -
Log Haul On North Fork To North Ram Road
northfork replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Government owns the road. Commercial traffic required to call kms. Ladd 2 on North Fork Rd, However Sunpine (SFP/West Fraser) contractors call on their private channel "Ram Haul" 159.555 tone 100. They have been doing this for years now Don, they call the section of the North Fork Road between the Sunpine Mainline and Trout Creek Road part of "their" mainline, and they call trout creek road the "mainline" too. They have been hauling out of the Gap & Jock Lake compartments for quite a while now. If you want to see some destruction head up the trout creek road all the way to the south bench of the north saskatchewan river. Nothing left. When they are jockeying from Gap mainline back across to the sunpine mainline there are indeed some very scary sections, the inverted downhill switchback at km 53 and the blasted hillside that narrowed the road to 1 vehicle wide at km 46. They'll have all that country tore up before much longer. And they'll keep locking us out of public land too. Anyone travelling in this country is foolish to go without a VHF radio nowadays. Some of these loghaulers are absolutely nuts and DO NOT care about your SUV or small pickup. They WILL run you off the road! There is also a huge re-build construction project happening on the North Fork Rd right after the pavement ends. If you really need to get out to the Ram country fast, take 752 west and go up the trunk road, or come south out of Nordegg. I work out in this area a lot and these have been my observations. -
Maligne has got to be the worst launch I have ever seen for this as far as trout fishing goes.

Thanks for the link I will check it out even though I'm not on Facebook. Further to your post, try and speak with government forestry staff as opposed to actual contractor PR staff when seeking answers. They do tend to be helpful despite the fact that they side with industry on a lot of things.Just don't forget logging has its place in helping the forest with its cycle as long as the government continues to supress every fire in SW Alberta. The entire east slopes is old, sick, diseased, and due for a major burn. There needs to be some common ground, integrated land use management is a big thing and is a growing concern in this province. This is another classic case of perhaps we should look to our neighbors to the south (Idaho, Montana, Washington). But also be careful what you wish for, first the greenies got the Castle watershed logging shut down, and now everything is/will be a wildland park, despite its proximity to Waterton National Park. Next will be no fishing, hunting, hiking or mountain biking - theres lots of people in some of those organizations who, if they had it their way there would be nobody in the backcountry. -

Not to derail guys but there has been BC-based logging contractors tearing up the west country up here for years now. A lot of it is not staying in one of the local mills for processing either. I agree with the above, however this is not something new. Forestry regulators are just puppets for the timber industry. -

Two small clousers in tandem has produced well for me. Hard part in those lakes is getting it down to where they are (usually bottom). No matter what you use just know you're never gonna outfish the guys bottom bouncing or using leeches or minnows. -
marks post. Auto marine specialties fixed mine up great. they are/were? an authorized service provider ?

I see Aurora has put a halt on trading today pending company news. Hope it's good news. -
Your friggin right it does. Don't leave the house looking to do it. But fisheries are a public resource. Poachers steal from all of us, As others have said with the new regs on the bow there is absolutely no way to plead confusion. They know damn well what they're doing. There is certain people you can give the benefit of the doubt, but if it's someone you talk to you can get about a 5 second read on them. It happens all the time up here,

Good to have binos, but a word to the wise, it sort of relates to the post above you, wait til you're out of sight and earshot to make the call! Same situation has happened to me too.

Join Bow River Trout - Support The Bow River Fishery
northfork replied to fishteck's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Though I don't fish the Bow anymore near as much as I'd like, I am all for putting my money and muscle where my mouth is. I will be in line to volunteer. People take the river for granted. I know that now more than ever. I like that this all goes back to the fishery, and half of it isn't eaten up by various administration and other costs. -

Don't believe everything you read in the finance news. If all these guys making predictions were ever right they wouldn't have to keep writing speculative articles for a living. The ETF is a safer bet for sure, but you're not going to do as well. Higher risk, higher reward. That's not to say that some companies will flop or things will happen, but if you individually buy one of the "big 10 or big 5" then if it does pay off, it will pay off better than an ETF. My hope is some of these companies stay the same, but if tobacco companies did in fact buy in, there's pretty good odds they would buy out some of these larger established companies. Who really knows for sure though. Don't bet the house on it. -
Can confirm I have seen them in Newell. Heard rumors of people catching them in the Red Deer in the city.

North Central Alberta Trout Stream Opportunities?
northfork replied to Komp's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Trailhead's post reaffirmed my suspicion. Based on stories I've heard, in the 60s and 70s, they would stock trout in almost any flowing water, beaver ponds, anywhere they thought they might be able to sustain themselves. Some paid off, lots did not. This is what I was referring to as gambler biologists. That stretch around Lodgepole sure looks just like any other brown trout creek you'd find in my neck of the woods. Potential is there. Again, if you find yourself with some spare time, a call in to F&W may shed some more light. They can dig out old stocking records or notes, if there is any! -

northfork replied to Komp's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
We don't have gambler biologists anymore like the ones that established browns in rivers not that far south of where you speak. It's definitely worth a call in to the Edson/Rocky F&W Office and speak to a bio or tech about it. They can provide you with info you wouldn't find online. The Pembina has had some issues in its own recently, moreso higher above where you speak and more relating to grayling, but that drainage is having some major enviornmental issues due to logging and oil and gas development. albertatrout on here might be able to offer some more info, he has more experience with this then I do. -

Same for me as of late, chalk up Organigram to that list as well. It is such a small chunk of the portfolio that it won't hurt if you lose or break even, but I am starting to get apprehensive about holding onto them. Perhaps sell everything while they're up, albeit only a little. -

I agree with you 100% Jayhad, there's a direct correlation with stock prices and media reporting in regards to pot stocks. And troutpanther I also agree with you, I currently have small holdings in 4 marijuana companies but that comprises ~5% of my portfolio in what I like to call the "what the hell let's see what happens" section. Agreed crazy uncertainty/volatility. Thanks for the input guys, these were the kind of replies I was hoping for because they're exactly the way I see it too.
