  1. Been out to the borrow pits north of Nordegg lately?
  2. I run Kenwood in my trucks and Motorola for a handheld. You need a radio that can Tx/Rx 136-174 MHz. You also need one that can hold at least 100 channels, Alberta hasn't got with the program of streamlining all resource roads like BC to get everything down to 40 channels. I work all over western Canada and my radios probably have 300 channels in them, and I've had to use nearly all of them. Communications shop purchase, program, and setup will run you around a grand. My suggestion would be to find either a kenwood, icom, or motorola mobile unit on kijiji that can hold quite a few channels for 3-4 hundred bucks and get a place like sundance comm in calgary to program it for you and install it/give you whatever accessories you need.
  3. I'm sorry if it came out that way, I didn't mean to lash out at you. Just wanted him to know that he would have options locally if he wants to chase browns or brookies, agreed it's not the most ideal base for cutt fishing but the nordegg motel sure could be. He did mention he was already going to be in the pass otherwise I agree fully, it's a much better base camp. Good suggestions there yonderin. I quite like learning about the local history, and the pass sure does have a lot. As a newcomer, you'll also notice the way of life changes as you come north too. Southern Alberta generally is much more laid back and slower (the way it should still be all over), as you come towards my neck of the woods where oil and gas is king, you will notice people aren't as friendly, everyone is in a hurry, etc. We have as much diversity in people as we do landscapes here. There is lots to see and do up this way as well if you decide to make it up. Lots of accomodation options in Rocky and more water than you could ever fish. I'm still working on it!
  4. Hi Delray, Don't let the above post discourage you. We have many different types of rivers and species to fish for up here, within 3 km of town or within 200 km of town. I'll send you a PM later when I have some more time with some info. I'm going to be up in the mountains bighorn sheep hunting at that time but if I was around would for sure take you out fishing! There are several places to access the south ram on foot and a hundred to access the north ram. The blackstone and tributaries also offer great fishing. As for Medicine Hat, cool name, nothing to see. Just a city on a parched prairie. The cypress hills an hour south of town, however, are beautiful, but you dang near need a few days just for that!
  5. This would be my #2 recommendation also excellent tires.
  6. Duratracs are the best all around tire I have found, there's a reason they are so popular. I've had them all working in the oilfield and they are hard to kill.
  7. I'm sorry tell me who you voted for in the last election in Alberta? If you do not vote you cannot bitch or cast stones. Get off your horse pal. That pipeline is headed your way too. Smitty, I just spent 30 minutes writing up a big reply of how I'm on the same team as you, the website decided to have a hiccup. I was just stating that Ms. Phillips has a double standard and does not engage ALL stakeholders when making decisions, and we will pay for that down the road. I like the positive changes we are seeing so far mostly especially with trying to get our economy off the tit, but, what, do responsible ATVers just not a have a right to public land, but us as fishermen do? There are three keywords this province needs, and that is Integrated Land Use. I voted NDP the last election and I will this one too, even though we've too many narrow minded rednecks gobblin up Jason Kennys bring back the alberta advantage BS. The oil price is on the climb and certainly that will have everything to do with the right being re-elected, much in way the same the NDP were responsbile for killing the economy. And yes, I do believe that she is the worst we've ever had. She's almost an ecoterrorist in my eyes. You could literally put anyone else in that role and I feel there would be way better stakeholder engagement, integrated land use management strategies, and a greater Alberta for all, not just the ones with the double standard. It just goes from wild west to shut everything down. There needs to be a middle ground, we can find the balance. Most of the NDP will engage all stakeholders, Phillips and her regime will not. Send me a PM and we can chat on the phone about this in more detail if you want, I don't have the energy to type another 20 paragraph post.
  8. Good year duratracs, I've ran them all working in the oilfield. Still behave nice on the highway and have enough meat to get you through gumbo. Otherwise as stated I'd get the toyo at 2s, or if you want something a little less agressive look at the cooper discoverer at3. Blaskin and Laine in calgary when I lived there carried coopers for hella cheap and I never had an issue there.
  9. While I agree with a lot of it, I would NEVER give Shannon Phillips a pat on the back. She has the biggest double standard of any environment minster we've ever had, and is never willing to listen to both sides of the line. There are some major proposals up here in my neck of the woods now, which, mostly would do a lot of good, however there are a few things I think are far too extreme. We need to develop better ways to adopt integrated land use management, and a lot of her plans for this area would threaten a lot of peoples livelihoods. Hits me in the feelers for sure and I won't bite the hand that feeds.
  10. To echo what scel said I grew up fishing the tailwater too. I was fortunate enough to catch a few donkies in the last ten years even but the consensus is that the original monsters have died off. The good news is there is a great crop of 8-16" browns. Sure the coarse fish may be impacting the brown trout negatively but as stated, the few browns have found a way. Unfortunatrely as the prussian carp advance further and further upstream I think we're going to see detrimental effects on the native and "wild" brown trout. Guys like sanky on here spend a lot more time there now than I do and can chime in with more information.
  11. Any communications shop could help you out, I see you're out of Edmonton.... You could look at Pioneer Offroad rentals, they rent them for cheap.
  12. That's fine. People don't need one. But the signs at a haul road entrance indicate that you do. And if anything happens and you don't have one, you are liable. I'm not saying its a necessity but I work on call roads a lot, like almost everyday. And I've seen, a dozen times, what can happen. It's not pretty.
  13. You don't need one on the trunk road... public road.
  14. Wow, I had no idea it was that much of a hassle. I was under the impression from our radio dude in Rocky who does our installs and programming that if you were using low watts for haul roads and t/t then it wasn't an issue for a licence. Are you a HAM operator? I've been looking into getting into that.
  15. Wrong. You don't need a licence for VHF radio. If you did, we'd have over a half million people in this province breaking the law everyday. Nevermind all the communications shops who sell them - you can walk right in and buy one. Technically, you do for a HAM unit, however for mobile use to operate on resource roads you do not. Most people up here have radios, since the majority work in the oilfield or forestry. I know several people who don't that still have radios because they recreate in areas they need to travel radio-controlled roads to get there. As was stated, illegal or not, I'd rather be breaking the law and know where the big trucks are than be pancaked. There are lots of front programmable VHF handhelds, check out the Baofengs. Terrible transmit range but at least you can hear people with mobile units. No - This means they have the right, and plan to, salvage all timber along the road right of ways - new and current construction. Why would you assume the worst! This is good and ensures sunpine is accountable for every salvageable tree. When it comes to right of way just hold your ground - If you're on a hill and see a logging truck comin down, of couse you better get the hell out of the way! At the end of the day they need to get home safe just as you do. The ram country is going to be brutally busy with activity. I can see the amount of conflict on the road already between campers, ATVers, fishers and three seperate log hauls. They are sure planning to log the piss out of the ram triangle. I am hopeful that better care and stewardship of buffer zones and stream crossings is taken this time. We do need some major forest cleanup out there, it's all an old, sick, monoculture of pine and spruce. And hey timber prices are still good so lets get at it before a big fire does. I've been saying for the last ten years that the rocky/nordegg area is going to get hit with a massive fire one of these years due to old forest age. All the new development for this camp has sure opened up more fishing access. Now, if this open pit coal mine is going to happen, then we're in for total doom for the ram watershed. Guys, at the end of the day, if you plan to spend lots of time in Central and Northern Alberta AND/OR BC backcountry, invest 500 bucks in a radio. You can find them on kijiji. Shops will install and program them for you for very reasonable prices. They last for 20 years especially if you don't use it too much. You can get weather stations on it, and they are a great safety tool where there is no cell service even with a booster. There are a lot of roads that are PRIVATE that you are not allowed on without a radio. These hired guys Don reverted to, will ticket users for not having a radio.
  16. You hit it on the head. Not as many dollars to chase these days like there used to be, working the weekend and getting 12 hours of OT isn't an option to lots anymore.
  17. That appears to be fairly accurate ftom what I saw. This is generally the time of year they go around and calibrate/repair equipment (before high water) so your story adds up on that assumption. The clearwater has been fishable I suppose, but the visibility has been terrible (especially below Prairie, short stretch til the N Sask I know). I generally use the Saskatchewan as a pretty reliable weathervain around town. At the treatment plant if the river right is quite turbid and river left not so much, I know the clearwater is bad. If the whole damn river is bad then I know the Ram is bad too.
  18. That's no big deal I see no issue. I thought you were asking what was wrong with this photo and on first glance looked like that rainbow was passing that poplar branch. I had to double take and reread to realize you were wondering why people complained. Because they do, as other people have said everyone is too sensitive nowadays (note how I said everyone and not guys/gals, lest we forget theres more than two genders now). A lot of elitist NIMBYs out there and frankly a few on this site. I'm done.
  19. Depends where you plan on taking it. If you're fishing some backwoods BC lakes then you definitely want as Brian suggested and get a topper/rack system with or without a winch. If it's all lakes you are comfortable driving to with a trailer then buy a dedicated boat trailer and don't look back. I run a 30 year old aluminum V hull and just replaced the trailer last year. Bought a shoreland'r trailer and love it. Deal with these guys and ask for Barry. http://www.recreationalpowersports.com/
  20. No sir it is not. The Clearwater barely is. We have feets of snow in the timber to melt off simultaneously which will murky things up. I'd say in two weeks you should be good to go.
  21. Short term pain for a long term gain. That road would benefit greatly from a week of sheepsfoot packing and lots of gravel.
  22. They don't want people on it when it's greasy, for safety and because agressive tires will chew it up worse. Good news is its a south facing descent so will not take long for it to break up and dry.
  23. Lloyd Clark in Alder flats would be a good place to start. He can point you in the right direction if he doesn't have any in the works. http://www.pinkmountainoutfitters.com/
  24. Exactly. People were bailing off ACB like they were the titanic to buy CMED shares so they could get "more" ACB stocks. A guy on stockhouse did a really good analysis with a model of 10k, it made sense for the early ones who jumped pre-noon and the volume wasnt ridiculous. A lot of people are going to get caught having paid even more for CMED and after trading fees and uncertainty really not coming out ahead. I just kept cool and stayed long, I've been an increasing owner of ACB since 2016 and will continue to be until we hit a specific mark. I'm starting to get a number in mind. As for HIP, CBW wasted no time and is now in talks with them, so, watch both of their stock prices closely next few weeks. jason is correct in his assessment that it could be a great short term addition. I did buy some CBW and started to invest in some more industries, I feel that lots of these new companies popping up are going to be insignificant now. Stay long on ACB fellas. It's likely doing to dip or level out for the next week or so, once all this dust settles hold on for a big bullish run. And everyone will have more RRSP room, more funds and firms buying in, up we continue. Anyone wants to get (back) into energy stocks, might I point your attention to Emerald Bay Energy (EBY). Do a little dd and make the decision for yourself.
