  1. That is so awesome. The wood grain couldn't have worked out any better. Nice job.
  2. IMO - Bauer Junior Mac series. Large arbour, cork/polymer disc drag, machined of areospace aluminum bar stock, and anodized. http://www.bauerflyreel.com/jm.html Happy shopping! Current
  3. Hey ham, If you think there is anything suspicious about this, by all means, give REPORT-A-POACHER a call at 1-800-642-3800 and also give the Calgary office of the Alberta Fish & Wildlife Division a call at 403-297-6423. It's possible that there's some sleazy poachers in the area. If you go back to take a closer look check to see if the bones have been cut with a saw or something. Cheers.
  4. Get the biggest hard drive you can afford. Movies take up about 1 gig each. I bought the 32 gb earlier this year for the same price that the new 64 gb is now fetching. I will likely get rid of the 32 gb and upgrade within the next year or so. Great for travel. Awesome little pocket "laptop" with the wifi capabilities. I use it constantly when not at my desktop. They now come with headphones with mic. Download Skype on it and talk to anyone in the world using your iPod! Amazing.
  5. Hey deek, If you're hitting yourself in the head you likely aren't waiting quite long enough on the backcast. Focus hard on this and it will help you in all types of casting. Probably the most important part of getting the most out of your casting stroke. I know it hurts but don't feel bad as we've all been there. Also try to focus on shooting it at the trees on the other side of the river. i.e. Throw it up into the air and across to get more out of your cast. You're setup is a good cheap alternative to extra spools/reels/lines and $$$. Otherwise, a SA Wet Tip Express is good but I think the 25' sink tip is a bit much. I like just the SA Wet Tip V which has about a 10' sinking section. Can't speak for other brands as I usually stick with SA. Good Luck!
  6. Right. These are all good suggestions. I guess it all depends on the student/teacher and whether the fish are looking up. You'd probably nail 'em on the parts of the Sheep with a light nymph rig...as a last resort of course! Haha jk
  7. Lot's of great places to take a beginner angler within an hour of Calgary to toss a bushy dry to willing fish. Try anywhere on the Sheep, Elbow, Cataract, Waiparous, or any tributaries of the above with a humpy or stimmy. Have fun and enjoy watching her learn about small streams and small (not always) trout in a natural setting. Learning to nymph and throw streamers can come later. Of course, no offense Hawg. Yours is good advice also. I just know if I wanted to teach someone to flyfish I would do it in the most basic essence of the sport, especially if I am tying their knots! Cheers. It's summer! Have fun!
  8. Nice work! That setup should do.
  9. The advice to test was given to me when I posed the same question to a bear expert and bear safety instructor and I trust his judgment. Of course, if in doubt, certainly go grab a new can. Good question about recycling old cans, Pete. If anyone knows please post. Cheers.
  10. Just give a test. Outdoors, firing downwind of course.
  11. Yeah, that's funny. Definitely pics of the same fish. I wonder how often that happens? Were you fishing dries?

Ok. All I'm trying to get at is that if you are going to lift a fish by the gillplates you better be extra careful not to touch the gills that are layered underneath. Also you better keep two hands on it at all times while your partner lays your rod across your shoulders and shoots a pic before release unless, of course, the fish is headed for the bbq. I really don't see what's wrong with saying this. My criticism is not so much for you guys but for any inexperienced fishers who may think that this is the best way to hold a trout. I have had to correct friends who are beginner fishermen from doing this (or lipping a 10" cuttie, etc.) If you say the gills were not touched and these fish were not lifted vertically by the gillplate, I believe you. It's just the whole "public forum" thing where the next thing you know people without experience are lifting all the biggest fish in the river this way. But mostly, in my original post, I just found it funny that nobody else said or did anything about the fingers under the gillplates in the photos. The very first rule listed on this site about posting images reads: "When posting pictures of fish please do not post any images that show fish being handled in the following ways if practicing catch and release. - fingers under gill plates or lifting fish by the gills (it can harm the gills and stress out the Fish)" I believed that if the fish were bow river browns or large bull trout things would have been different. I'll try to keep my tongue-in-cheek comments to myself in the future. I have better things to do than waste time going back and forth like this.

Take it easy, Taco. I don't think it's cool to be telling people you don't know to "FO" on a public forum or anywhere else for that matter. Please use some manners. Feel free to tell me to "FO" in a pm in the future and I can reevaluate any posting which may have offended anyone. Sorry to the original poster. I think it's a great feat to catch lakers on a fly rod. Good job! I've never done it. I just don't like seeing people's finger in trout or char gills. That's my opinion and I think I'm free to share it. I added the wink to show I was being light-hearted. The fish don't appear to be harmed I just had to say something after seeing the discussion in another thread. "Double standards," etc. Peace.

Edited Post. Wasn't exactly "constructive." Sorry, Ayr. Watch those fingies!
  15. Realistic idea. Some places have special retention licenses vs catch and release licenses!
  16. Watch out for those "crack needles!" Lots of great neighbourhoods throughout the city. Sundancefisher's reply is really great. One thing that stands out is that a lot of people who grow up here stay here. This says a lot. Although the city is not quite the one I grew up in it's still a great place to live. FF heaven. Good luck.
  17. True, especially with barbless hooks regulation BUT if you really think you need a hook remover, this is a good one.
  18. It's a great tool. Even the large size can remove small hooks. Pick it up!
  19. Yeah, it's certainly nothing to argue about but it is interesting to see the poll results.
