Brookies will do ok in warmer water I have seen them in damn near stagnant swamp water, they get big there, but it has to be clean water... If you do the nutrient injections then you will be boosting the introduced species, if they are in the sys, the browns and Brookies will be all over that like a (bad fat joke here) and it would be artificial any way, the bugs may surge but then the fish eat them, then back to starting point, if you put lime stone in the head waters of the stream that is supposed to do something , maybe the OP can shed some light on that, but I think again that the non-native fish would get the benefit of the Limestone.

A lot of good reading there, read most of what I could until 0130am this morning, a lot of it, supports that the Brookies do take over when cutts are co-mingled but they the brookies tend to live in the lower and slower geography of the streams with the bows.. one article stated that the majority of the lakes stocked were barren to begin with, and that they were stocked for the tourists..the bulls and the brookies do hybrid, but not often and the hybrids are fertile, i would think that the smaller brookies for the most part would be a good substitute for the cutts the bulls usually feed on. so maybe we should move bulls it the over populated areas.. oh oh back down a slippery slope.. for the most part brookies will stay small and over populate a section of a river system, this I would think would allow larger bows,bulls and browns and to an extent Cutts to feed on them and actually thrive, so maybe they are a blessing in disguise, a lot of the rivers here in the west are not as nutrient rich as in the east, and even then brookies do not get large unless they have a large rich food source, and the genitics to get large, Minipi comes to mind mice, and prolific caddis, but only a small (relatively) number of the brookies get really large.. As to what the Nat parks and the province is to do about the Brookie "problem" I am not sure, but and there is always a but the wholesale slaughter of an introduced species does not ring right to me.. Through Pm's I know what this thing was about, and for my part in the shitstorm , well it is what it is.. and PGK I of course will keep my eyes open for you buddy..

I do find beauty in an intact ecosystem, even with the introduced species that we all love! Agreed ! there is more to the post then that one line! You have to be a fair bit away from the hubs of the parks as we know them today..

Not now nor have I ever been a meat fisherman, just stating the historical facts.. The Brooks and Browns did not cause environmental damage, just species displacement.. these are not the rats of Australia, or the Cane Toads..those were introduced and invasive.. I strongly challenge you to find me a true intact ecosystem, were at no time did a species show up after the start point! it does not exist, ecosystems are not static, they change all the time, for good and bad.. but what is the time frame for them to return to what we would call stable, There always is a winner and loser in nature.. Note: at one time when I left home as a kid in NB, I did serve on Brook trout and rabbits and blue berries for a very short time, but that was the extent of it. I do hunt, and I have taught my sons to hunt and fish with the highest regard for the rules and regulations and for the resource. but and there is always a but - this petty "we have to return the world to "what it was, or what we think it was in the good old days" is wrong, these are the good old days.. It can't be done don't waste my tax dollars on it..

At one time the Nat parks were focused on Fishing and harvesting of fish, then for what ever reason they stopped stocking, 70/80s maybe in response to greenpeice/PETA types that were emerging at that time.. well here we are now , "fishing brings in Little Revenue" well if there are no fish then No revenue! the native species are not conducive to big catch rates that tourists want, so they turned their attention to other things and now we are at Zip lines for a thrill in a Nat park.. Weird right.. they are supposed to be a place of beauty and natural wonder! I do not find anything beautiful in a zip line.. I do find beauty in an intact ecosystem, even with the introduced species that we all love!

The original idea for the parks was to establish a place for TOURISTS to go and enjoy nature, have a place to fish, as the industrial age, had destroyed that opportunity for Canadians in the past. That is why the large lodges and rail sys was put where it was and why the parks were put were they are.. and the prolific Brook trout and the iconic Browns were INTRODUCED.... Not to be some shrine to what some think things should be or were..

The mountain pine beetle (MPB), Dendroctonus ponderosae, is a species of bark beetle native to the forests of western North America from Mexico to central British Columbia. And last time I checked the Brook trout was one of the first Trout/Char discovered in NA, and very native, to a much larger part of NA then the local trouts, and not conclusively, to only semi eastern NA We are talking about Alberta parks.. I do not rate the Brook trout, as invasive, lets look at real invasive species - Didgimo, Zebra mussels, Whirling, sea lice.. and you have still not told me and truthfully you don't have to what is your area of study? or answered the question is this just a way for Boilinjests to carry on a larger experiment. BTW I have some Biologist friends that I respect very much, but not always agree with!!

a student of what? What course of study are you in? just curious what course would allow you to use this type of "very scientific" data gathering ? Here's a question, what was the thought process that motivated the Parks managers to stock the Browns and Brookies in the first place? Was the thought process that the waters were barren, unproductive, not conducive to holding the local native species? I for one do not see them Brown and Brookies as invasive, I see them as planted. introduced. The pine beetle, now that is invasive, it was not introduced by the Parks sys or Boilinjests, (yes I spelled Biologists, wrong and that is on purpose). So were do we draw the line and say well lets take them away they are no good or not worthy.. return the waters to the native trouts - which may not really do well there, so is this just a science experiment for Boilinjests and Student Boilinjests... Answer honestly! As I have answered honestly, but of course I am biased, of course I am!!!

This months theme is reels, and this reel has been around for a while, approx 1800+/-. the fly on top is one of only two, it was made from hair from my German Shepherd Dog, Fischer, it was made for a heroic Police service dog from BC, who had past on. The reel is a all brass reel, not marked but marked up some, it was found in a home near Loch Lamond lake. The home belonged to Charlies Baillie, a famous Rod maker who was a contemporary of the Leonard's of Maine and other famous rod makers. I have other artifacts from the home. I chose this reel for the display as I could picture the fly, reel and an old bamboo or Lancewood rod being fished for a massive sea run Atlantic Salmon..

you're right I should qualify that "Organic" as in not local "organic" ,most if not all unless marked, "organic" come from very far away.. I would rather pay for not local Canadian non-organic, then not local not Canadian organic, and I always buy local non-organic and organic, produce.. or if I have to Canadian not local organic, I also grow organic with household compost, no pesticides or other nasties..

If that is true that makes us (Canada) by definition a third world country - a country that has natural resources but not the infrastructure to refine them..so we sell them and buy them as refined goods.

Damn even if it is government propaganda it is a damn good message, I do not believe in "organic" so to say But and there is always a but - I much prefer local and Canadian..... had a hard time buying English Cucumbers until my wife told me they were gown in Canada!!!

Hi Rick Great story and great thoughts and memories.. Fathers and indeed grandfathers of yesteryear played a great part in shaping today's slightly older Fly fishers. It is by their example that we share our love of the sport and stories with younger Fly fishers and our own prodigy. You sir had a fine guide, and it is easy to see that he did a great job with his little sport! Ray.
