  1. Now that last week's snow has melted down South ... unfortunately not west of Edmonton. And since there is a frost warning for most of central and southern Alberta and since Lethbridge set a record for this morning's low at -5°!! ... And since the trees are barely showing signs of green .... I just thought I take a moment to present this public service announcement: The days stay getting shorter in four weeks. Clive the Bastard
  2. Thanks to all. RE: Tax receipts "The tax receipt is issued to the donor of the item." Not necessarily. What I recall from last year was that donors of trips are not able to request a tax receipt from TUC. Can someone confirm? We were told we could not claim expenses incurred for our donated trip.) However, donors of hard goods can ask for a tax receipt based on real value of goods donated (receipts) and I have done so many times for donated pictures. CRA has always accepted tax receipts for "art" within reason. Many years ago they would allow a claim for all cash costs plus $100 for artistic value and so that is what I have stuck to. So if I have (say) $50 into a picture for the print and frame I can (and have many times) submitted an "an invoice for the purpose of issuing a tax receipt" for $150 (or whatever) to the charitable agency. I've also requested receipts for the sale price but RCA can get pissy if the framed print sell way high. i.e. not fair market value because someone wanted to donate to a worthy cause. I've submitted invoices in recent years to TUC, Schizophrenia Society, local library, Kids' Wish, DU and the local museum. So it does work. Sometimes you have to hound these folks for receipts as they are often run by unpaid volunteers who are busy. A purchaser can request a tax receipt if it can be shown that the price paid was above the market value. Normally a buyer cannot get a receipt of they get goods in return. If you buy a $200 item for $1000 you should be able to claim $800 as a donation. Many folks complain about not getting a receipt. I would strongly recommend that donors take the initiative and send an invoice to TUC for this auction. Here is sample wording I use... Invoice Date: October 21, 2008 To: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX For the purpose of issuing a tax receipt, this is an invoice for the value of the framed photograph donated to XXXXXXX for the October 2008 auction. Description: Framed 14 by 11-inch sepia print of an American Bison, including printing costs, framing and artistic value. Total $150.00 Sincerely,
  3. I LANDED a rainbow on a yarn indicator on the OM once....hit indy .. got teeth stuck in yarn and tangled in leader ... landed it. Try to explain that in a closed river. Stay on the grass or you will be wasting time trying to get out of a lot of tickets and remember they can take all of your gear. Just not worth the possible hassle and they will be on full alert looking for potential law breakers. Perhaps more importantly, it will waste the time of officers who have more important things to do.
  4. Been reading over the posts here. Love the humor regarding the cake. Sorry, Chris, no bids from me. GREAT donations from lots of folks and GREAT bids as well. Thanks to all! Clive
  5. Winnie the Pooh on Swine Flu
  6. Good stuff Greg. Thanks. I will donate a one-day outdoor photography "workshop" for one or two people with DSLRs only. This offer is open for any day (we can agree on) in July through September, 2009.) Depending on your travel needs, we will go from mid morning until whenever ... The winner will have to travel to either Pincher Creek or Coaldale...depending on when and where we can agree on. I will provide transportation from there. We will basically spend the day taking pictures and attempting to cover many photography items such as: lighting, composition and technique. We will cover apertures, shutter speeds, ISO and their applications. We can practice macro (closeup) photography, wildlife and scenics. (If we agree on meeting in Pincher perhaps we can do Waterton and find some bears. I'll drive.) The winner will be responsible for lunch and refreshments and of course appropriate hiking shoes and clothing. You will need your DSLR, lenses, polarizing filter and tripod or monopod. QUALS I have taken pictures for fifty years and owned SLRs for 41 years. I have conducted many workshops and made dozens of photography presentations and just completed a two-session outdoor photography workshop. See here...scroll way down to my name..or <ctrl><f> and search for "photography." I sold pictures commercially for 20 years and I took the front cover pictures for the 2007 and 2008 Alberta Fishing Guide magazines. Here are few pictures I took in 2008. And here are three pictures I took yesterday ... ♂ shoveler duck Honey bee American robin
  7. rickr .. it's your new president's fault.. It was once said that a black man would be president when pigs fly, Indeed 100 days into Obama’s presidency, swine flu. Hope all is well with your son. Very scary.
  8. Comments from the cultural backwaters of Coaldale ... Agree with the elevator thing .. get off in a manner so as not to create a logjam. If there are two or three only, I normally let the ladies go first. You know what absolutely drives me crazy? (It is a short trip!) When I am nice, step forward and open a door for a woman and she walks right by me as if I was her personal butler and she says nothing to acknowledge my consideration. We all do things and expect no reward but I get POed when it is obvious I am trying to me nice and the lady does not have the decency to say, "Thank you." I loudly say, "You're welcome." If I held the door open for my wife, she'd get suspicious.
  9. "Just Another Unlicensed Angler" ... Geez Don, I thought you had turned 65 and did not need a license this year!! The otters will be (are) a big concern if there are no countervailing predators and they are left to populate at will. There are a lot of mink on the Crow and I've seen them with small trout, but I think mergansers eat way more fish on the Crow. It is all one happy balance I guess BUT add a new predator and they can have an impact.
  10. For rickr .. ================================= NOAH TODAY In the year 2009, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said: "Once again, the earth has become wicked and over -populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me." "Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans." He gave Noah the blueprints, saying: "You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights." Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark. "Noah!," He roared, "I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?" "Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed." "I needed a building permit." "I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system." "My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the Ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision." "Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it." "Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl." "I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!" "When I started gathering the animals, an animal rights group sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space." "Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood." "I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew." "Immigration and Naturalization are checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work." "The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with Ark-building experience." "To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species." "So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark." "Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky." Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?" "No," said the Lord. "The GOVERNMENT beat me to it."
  11. A man was laying in bed with his new girlfriend. After having great sex, she spent the next hour just scratching his nuts-- something she seemed to love to do. As he was enjoying it, he turned and asked her, 'Why do you love doing that?' 'Because,' she replied, 'I really miss mine.'
  12. Maybe Oilers' fans would want one. Sort of a step up for them.
  13. Funny one Weedy...will deal with you later. Cool turkeys! Lots of nice hopper wingers there. Porkies or S of Hwy #3... i.e. the "Burmis flock"?
  14. Yeah it is a tad weird. But it is very cool what the camera shows. Brian I posted a couple last year and a couple of guys cried "BS" and "Photoshop"... all true stuff. I decided to upload a bunch of whiffling geese pix into a slide show and figured to show them here. It is fun stuff.
  15. Finally uploaded a bunch of pictures of "whiffling geese" ... nothing to do with fishing, but interesting stuff for you outdoorsy types. Like Yogi said, "You can see a lot by looking." Read the text at the bottom first. Whiffling geese slide show Click once on the first image and use left and right arrow keys to move ahead or back.
  16. Aquaholic got it. On the final cast "pretend" the water level is at waist or eye height ... that's where the line should lay out...and then let it fall. If the line tends to kink up (or pile up a bit), then, as the line falls, simply give it a slight pull backward.
  17. hehe .. thanks all .. .. love all of the 'mart-ass jokes...and no one even mentioned 'tree' chilling here in hot and sunny casablanca, chile for 2 days before we head home... been uploading pix as we go ... wine ountry was (is) great ...interesting stuff... and i don't even drink.... http://clives.shawwebspace.ca/photos/view/chile_2009_/ catch you on the river one day... ciao clive
  18. " finding good guides that cater to fly fisherman can be damn near impossible anywhere in a 6 hour radius..." a guy from lethbridge went to hatiguanico from veradero last year...a one-day trip ... 3 to 4 hour drive ..not expensve ... you just need to set a time and place .. it is easy to find hatiguanico on google earth (have link on home pooter..not at home now)... it's another 2 hours to las salinas so that's hard for a one-day trip...you should be able to get in (say) 3 or 4 hours of tarpon fishing in the rio ... it is not as much 'fun' as sight fishing in the chuck but maybe you have to compromise...there are some seriously big tarpon in the river.... yeah .. mike over at CP can also help .. but the 'gardens' is out for a one dayer.
  19. from veradaro see if you can arrange a one-day to the Hataguanico for tarpon .. 10-wt..poppers and streamers ... fish the side chanels for tarpon with poppers...just ask adc about that ...my avatar is a hataguanico tarpon last march....las salinas is a very long day trip from veradaro....the rio is closer and still a 3 or 4-hr drive...ask david at fish tails ... clive
