  1. I have camped at Cataract a ton and I have never seen it full on a regular weekend, love that campground. I have camped at Racehorse a few times of the past two years and only once have I not gotten a spot. Sometimes the only spots left are near the FTR which kind of bites. I like Dutch creek up the road a bit better. I have also looked into but not stayed at the Oldman campground and it has been pretty empty. Love that entire area!
  2. Congratulations Birchy and Lynn. Birchy, if that job is through the contact provided by Lynn then that is wicked. Very great for you to provide that for him Lynn. And good luck with your new position Lynn. I hope my wife has the same luck as she is out of work at the end of the month.
  3. I think it is due to the drop in gas prices making it cheaper for everyone to drive to go fishing.
  4. Depending on where and when I may be able to do it as well.
  5. I (and my wife) did the basic fly fishing course through Country Pleasures about 6 or 7 years ago. At that time we got the discount coupon too. It was absolutely awesome. I thought it was smart too that all during the day they suggested you switched rods so you could feel the difference. Each one of those rods had a number so if you wanted to go back to the store at some point to use the coupon you could just tell them which rod you liked. I buy all my major stuff from there and will continue to do so. I have not gone into the other shops mentioned but I can imagine based on what was said by others that you would likely have a similar experience there. So all I can say is that the course at CP was fantastic and would recommend it to anyone. We also did a guided float through them as a second level-type course geared at what we wanted to learn next. That was even better. I also hope to do something with Jim some day.
  6. Is there any place to return or recycle an expired can of Bear spray? I don't want to leave it the garage or basement and would like to recycle it somewhere.
  7. I am actually a bit dissapointed with some of the reactions to this seamingly innocent question. I see no harm asking what guys like as their favourite Bull stream, especially when you mentioned some of the more popular to begin with. I don't think there are too many on here who don't know that those 3 rivers hold fair Bulls in them so if someone was to say that one of them was their favourite I really doubt there would be an influx of anglers to that river. Secondly, I do not understand why someone would not answer what their streamer of choice would be. Is there some kind of competition I haven't heard of that would require others to keep their streamers a secret? Is there a worry that suddenly everyone else is going to enjoy catching these fish? Anyways, enough complaining on my part. I wish I could help you out with this question but I don't hunt Bulls. I would like to but I am not a big streamer guy. But if I was you, I would go out to any of those 3 that you mentioned, find some deep pools and rip some big streamers through them and I would imagine you should be able to have some fun. And if that doesn't work, throw on a hopper-dropper and have some good times with the amazing Cutties in those waters!
  8. Great pics and wonderful scenery! Nice work.
  9. I have the Rivershed and have been using them for a couple of months. I absolutely love them. They are very comfortable and do well in the water and especially on the wet banks. One of the things I like most about them is they almost feel new everytime I put them on because they do not shrink once they dry. I don't have anything to compare them to as before I had glued felt to a $30 pair of boots from Wallymart. I don't have to tell you how good those felt after a few hours of walking. Rivershed is money well spent in my opinion.
  10. Yes, have tried to the Dude Beer and did not like it. Brewed by the same company that does TnT Beer which is also not good. Seems to be a competition on our sumer hockey team for who can bring the worst beer.
  11. Great post! Happy Father's Day!
  12. This is kind of an interesting thread although it has been covered numerous times, around and around we go again. I kind of take exception to someone saying that posting a pic or report is plain ego stroking. So are saying that my post a week ago about my time on Fallentimber was all about stroking my ego? I am not sure how it came across to you but it was certainly not about stroking my ego. It was all about how much fun I had hitting this new water and that I managed to catch something that made my day and I wanted to share my story. If that gets someone else to do some exploring than great, it is one of my most favourite things so why shouldn't someone else be allowed to do the same? Someone else said something in that thread about creating a lot of buzz about that creek. Any previous reports had nothing to do with me going there (I got hints from a local guide on different waters and possible access points). I fish the Bow at most twice a year so there is not a lot of options near Calgary at that time of year for stream fishing. I also fished the Little Red Deer a few weeks ago and did pretty good...oops I guess I should say anything about that secret stream either. The bottom line is that I enjoy this sport and will continue to share the water with anyone else out there as they have just as much right to be there. When I have a good day and I want to share, I will do that too. This is a forum and that is one of the reasons why I come on here. Flame away if you want.
  13. I am not sure if that device will get you any further as it appears to provide the same functionality as the Pinnacle device. Does the video that you captured flicker as well when you try and play it back after? It is possible that your computer can't handle the processing, be it memory, processor or video card, of the incomming video while trying to display as well as writing it to the harddrive. All of this is fairly intensive on the system.
  14. Looking at the link you attached it is a firewire output (IEEE1394) to the computer. I think you are going to need to buy a firewire card for your computer if you don't already have that type of port. I am not sure if I have ever seen a firewire to USB adapter. I bought a firewire PCI card for my computer from MemoryExpress for transfering HD video from my camera and it works great and simple to install.
  15. Hmm, I am not sure about that one. Usually the red, white and yellow are for audio and video and so I would say that you will not be able to connect to a firewire port but perhaps can connect them to your audio/video ports on a capture board. What is the pinnacle board? Is it capable of doing video capture? When you say usb to firewire, are you saying usb on the camera to firewire on the computer? If so, why not just go usb to usb? You will not get the speed of firewire unless both sides of the connection are talking the same protocol.
  16. I have the Simms Rivershed with the Vibram soles and really like them. Prior to this I was using very uncomfortable $20 boots from Wallymart with felt glued on the bottom so anything is a step up in terms of comfort. But the Simms are really comfortable, 7 hours covering a lot of water on the weekend and my feet never felt better.
  17. I wet waded yesterday on Fallentimber. Perfect day for it. I refuse to wet wade the Bow any time of the year. Personal choice.
  18. The more I thought about it the more I believe it is a "fly too big". This often would happen when trying to tie on a big stone nymph on a 4x leader. I looked at the knot I was using and it was a Clinch Knot. Had a look at the duncan and will give that a try tomorrow when I am out. Thanks again.
  19. Thanks all for the advice. I am doubting that it is a defective leader as this seems to happen more often than it should and leads me to believe it is something I am doing. I will look into using a different knot and see if that helps at all.
  20. Be it lazy or whatever, but, I don't usually tie tippet to the leader until I get the leader down to a size that is too small requiring me to tie on some tippet to extend the line. And yes, I use saliva when cinching the knot. I keep my tippet in my vest so it won't be UV damage. Thanks for the info guys. Perhaps I will start putting some tippet on, I am just lazy and don't really want to.
  21. I think I probably already know what the answer is but thought I would ask anyways. I have found fairly consistently in the past that when I put on a new leader I often break it when cinching the knot at the fly. This happens more often when I upsize the fly I am using. I don't know the name of the knot I use and so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I also do wet the knot before cinching it tight. Does anyone know why this is happening? Should I be tying on some tippet to better match the size of the hook? Thanks.
  22. I wasn't sure if anyone actually realized that my handle was a play on words and not my name. Good on you for catching it.
  23. You are right, probably not enough people seen to measure efficiency. Perhaps I shouldn't check this forum during work hours as I get my work buzz words mixed into flyfishing talk.
  24. This brings to mind a question that I thought about when I read one of these reports awhile ago. I think he gave him a written warning for possessing a hook with barbs but not catch him fishing it. I believe he would have gotten a ticket if he was actually fishing with the hook with barbs. That is what I got from it (and from a previous report like it). Now, it is not written in the regulations (or point it to me if I am wrong) that it is illegal to carry or possess hooks with barbs so why waste time and paper writing a warning? I am an offender of this as I tend to buy my flies and they all seem to come with barbs. I am too lazy to pinch them all right after buying them and wait until I tie them on. Yes I know, I could forget but I have not forgetton once to date as I have made it a routine every time I string up or tie on a new fly. If the warning is just a way to educate then that is fine, just thought writing a warning out for something that really doesn't provide a consequence is a bit inefficient in my mind.
  25. It is a good idea to live in a community that fits your lifestyle but there are plenty of houses near the core that have dogs that bark all day too. And perhaps people move to the burbs to get away from the noisy neighbours. I moved to the burbs without having a kid and it was fine. I still live in the burbs and now have a kid but continue to sit on the deck and drink and swear. Now its with the neighbours. But I agree, find a place that fits your lifestyle. I like the affordability and sizes of the houses in the burbs. I don't work downtown so no need to live near there. You found your reason to live where you live and that is perfect.
