Waders With No Neoprene
DonAndersen replied to SanJuanWorm's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
SanJuanWorm, ÜberFly is correct, I use Red Ball Waders - no neoprene. Unfortunately Red Ball is no more. My waders are getting more than a tad ratty looking. Thank God Aquaseal still exists. I'm looking for a replacement w/o neoprene also. regards, Don -

Invasives - kill 'em I say. Specially all them critters in GoreTex and plastic boots with long things strapped to their legs. People have no place in Parks. Don

Sun, I was raised @ Turner Valley and fished the Sheep, Highwood et al from 1955>70. The Sheep is about as good now as it was then from what I saw when I fished it 2 summers ago for the best part of 6 weeks. There were more Bull Trout and a lot less opportunity for anglers to access the water. But the areas I did fish, were the same. And Cow Crap is flushed through the system quickly. Human crap is a daily addition. Works a whole lot better except for the birth control pills and latex paints. And with that note - get ride of all them damn cows and get some buffalo in the west country. catch ya' Don

Sun . The Crow nutrient load has diminished a lot from years past. The blanket hatches are about gone as are the midges hatches in early fall. Other streams would certainly enjoy some help but you gotta convince Calgarians that putting the sewage back into the Bow in Banff and Canmore is a good idea. Worked once to furnish decent fishing. Upper Bow fishery has been much poorer since sewage was removed. But, helpfully, Calgary does keep sewage in the Bow for those folks that get their domestic water in Brooks. Attempted once to get the Town of Rocky to dump their sewage about 30 miles upstream of the town. It would serve two purposes. 1] If you didn't want to drink it, don't pour it into the sewage & 2] Sure would increase the bug life in the Clearwaterr. BC uses fertilizer in some lakes. Sure it would work. Just gotta convince the Dept. of Ignorance. Don

Taco, Did you fish the river in the gold old days? Nobody ate the fish and they did smell like gasoline. Boy was there lots of them and did they fight!!! Nothing like a refinery or two dumping into the river. catch ya' Don
-
How in the h*** can anyone eat a fish that looks like this. Greatest sport fish that ever was. If you going to kill some, do it in the Crow, Got one in there about 25 years ago. They must be breeding like flies according to the accepted pap put forth by Alberta Govt. Biologists.

Taco, Didn't quite happen although it was close. Had a herd of high school kids in a outdoor appreciation course. Casting practice in the gym got one of the sprinklers hooked. Got him stopped before he could pull the plastic thing out of the valve. catch ya' Don

And watch out for the sprinkler nozzles. Jerk the *hit outta them and it's gonna get wet. Don

Jeremie, I and I'm sure that others could and have written articles or even books on the methods of chironomid fishing. But I'm not about to. What you need to do is join the guys @ http://www.flybc.ca/ which is a BC site. After you register you get more privileges than those that don't. One of them is access to articles written by some of the best chironomid fishermen out there. The articles appear on the right side of the home page. Some that are listed include: Deep Water Chironomids By John Sclar (Jonnycronny) Long-lining Chironomids. By Jason Majoskey Fishing the Long Line By Randy Paskell (Floon Just added!!!! And I just about blew it. There is a new site available that has a sack of info in it regarding stillwaters. See: http://www.flyfishingtechniques.co/ And if I recall correctly, you fish from a Fishcat. Do you anchor it? Chironomidiing w/o an anchor is near impossible. catch ya' Don

Advice Needed For Gear Buying
DonAndersen replied to splasher5's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
splasher5, Some pontoon boat frames are made of aluminum and bust. Friends and I have broken 3. Go steel. Things get real exciting when they break. Don -
olddieselguy, Line weights for rods is a very personal thing. The manufacturer or rod designer had or may have had a line weight in mind when he did the taper. However!!!!! His opinion is just as valid as yours. If you think the rod needs another line weight to perform to your expectation, by all means, use it. Here is a selection of Old Wive's Tales for your FF enjoyment: 1] you must line the rod with the builder's recommendation 2] Over-lining rods will cause them to crack/bust/split or may in extreme cases cause your latte to get cold. 3] You must never use sinking lines with bamboo rods. 4] Bamboo rods are tender. - Do try the rod on rod test - lay your favorite plastic rod next to your bamboo rod and walk up them - go fishing - test complete. catch ya' Don PS: took a run at a 7'6" 4 wt.taper this winter and built 2 rods. Finished them up and lawn cast. Casts a 4 wt. fine, a 5 weight fine and kinds runs outta gas with a 6 wt over 65' out or the guides. One of the rods is heading for the Edmonton TU Lloyd Shea Fund and should be available for examination in the Northern Lites Fly Tying Club booth @ the FF show in Calgary the other is on my web site.

Outdoor Responsibilty
DonAndersen replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Few give a *hit enough to do it right. Don -
Taco's comment "Outdoor use comes with a certain responsibly, fires and fire pits are no different. " Got me wondering. What is outdoor responsibility? And if you have it, how would you describe it? And if you need it, how do you learn it? If you don't treat the outdoors responsibly, are you banned and whose the judge? We've all seen examples of the lack of outdoor responsibility IN OUR OPINION. Some of mine would include: 1] Quadding within 100 meters of water 2] Lack of winch on a 4*4 - + other tools like shovel, extra chains etc. 3] Fires for no good reason 4] Riding a snow machine up an avalanche path. 5] Timmies cup/Bud cans in the vehicle - we all know it's going on the ground - the question is where. regards, Don

Guys, Something to consider. The burnt soils from casual fire may last several lifetimes before nature repairs the damage. I know if I was a landowner and some nimrod started a fire on my land out of an established pit, he'd be boosted off quick. Do recall an landowner that owned a place on the low Bow. I went to school with the guy. We used to take out our boats on his property. Got there one morning to do a spot and he refused us permission. You guessed it. Some jerk with a bank fire burnt down 80 acres of oats. So his response was to ban everyone. It's worth your time to wander off the banks of the Oldman, Livingstone, Dutch et al and look for fire pits. Some are located within feet of each other. All are ugly. Don

School Zones In Calgary
DonAndersen replied to fish4trout's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Hi, Have wondered for years the logic of school zones. OK, I buy into the "keeps kids alive stuff" but how come there is a school zone on Highway #11 just east of the Leslieville turn-off and another on Highway #22 @ the Westbrooke School south of Cromona. Both school zones are located in rural areas with all white kids attending. Now there is a religious group with a school just to the west side of Airdrie - no school zone and yet another example - no zone on the native school located just south of Bragg Creek. Are religious kids or natives less important? I'd guess the Alberta Govt sees it that way. Don -
