  1. How many of you attended one of the South Saskatchewan Land Use Framework meetings held in Southern Alberta Last Fall. The locations were on a previous thread here. This was one of your many opportunities to provide public input. How many have written their MLA (He needs to talk to the minister to ensure it gets cabinet attention), The SRD Minister and the Premier? :derby racer: If your answer is None of the Above, Quit your Bitching and Do Something About It. Although discussing it here creates some awareness, it doesn't solve the problem. We're preaching to the converted.
  2. I had it about 1 year ago, i feel your pain it #@*%# hurts. Went to the Doc and was told I had Rich Man's Disease? ??????? Gout. You can control with diet. Items on the list include Red Meat(which I didn't stop eating), Salmon, Oily Fish, Shell fish, Beans, Asparagus, Cauliflower among some others. A few months ago I had a couple of Salmon sandwiches for lunch, Baked Salmon for dinner and a couple of more Salmon sandwhiches the next day for lunch. The pain was starting to come back in the toe. I still eat most of the above, although now I try not to each too much in a short period of time. Dried Cranberries and Cranberry juice is also an antidote. For me initially though the Meds worked great.
  3. TAX INFORMATION TAKEN FROM TU DINNER PROGRAM Revenue Canada has ruled that the price paid for an item at a charity auction is the fair market value of the item. The price paid will therefore not be allowed as a charitable donation for tax purposes. However where the value of an item is ascertainable and made known to bidders in advance, a donation receipt will be available if the successful bid is more than 25% above the listed value: in this case the donation receipt will be an amount equal to the excess over the listed value.
  4. Phil: Welcome to Edmonton. The closest water that is open for fishing right now is the Stauffer. A spring creek with spooky Brown Trout. Another few weeks until others open on April 1. As for stillwater, most of the lakes are froze until Mid to late April. In the meantime stop in at Northern Lights Fly Tyers - Trout Unlimited Edmonton. We meet every Wed. at 7:00 at Queen Mary Park Community League 108 Ave. 117 St. We have an extensive library containing over 600 book titles and 150 DVDs available to members. As one of the most active clubs anywhere we pride ourselves in educating in all aspects of fly tying and fly fishing as well as conservation. Visit us at www.nlft.org We will have 6 booths at the Boat & Sportsman Show this Thurs thru Sun if you get a chance drop in and see us.
  5. Not alot of conversation about the Flames here. Will Steve Staois replace Dion Phaneuf????????? Everyone in Calgary must be happy with the new Flames look.
  6. Athabasca Rainbows have been stocked in one lake that isn't open yet. They apparently don't follow the small reputation of Athabasca's, and are growing huge with the food supply.
  7. ALBERTA FISHERIES ROUND TABLE is in Edmonton April 17 is a note that all participants were send by Ken Crutchfield last week. Agenda to be announced shortly. On another note Ken Crutchfield is retiring next month. Who attended one of the 10 meetings held in Southern Alberta last November and December requesting PUBLIC INPUT on the South Saskatchewan Watershed?
  8. As a strictly fly fisherman only, I OPPOSE any implementation of FLY FISHING ONLY water. As a licenced fisherman you pay the same taxes etc. for this resource and FLY FISHING already has an elitist reputation and FLY FISHING ONLY WATER ONLY ENHANCES THAT. What would be the benefit?
  9. This looks like a great presentation. Getting the opportunity to learn some entomology for a specific water body like The Bow River, that is used by so many is invaluable to any fly fisherman. I'm sure you will come away with a better understanding of the Bow and the Bugs that has made it famous worldwide. If you are in the Calgary area you should attend this event.
  10. Headscan: I would probably use imitations as well for fishing. If I were tying display flies then the Jungle Cock would require the investment. Thank God my tying not any where good enough (all my ties are cripples) that I don't tie Full Dress Salmon Flies. If you want to talk about spending money on materials and a specific size and or quality these guys are unbelievable. When it comes to the artistic part, heck I have trouble drawing a STICK MAN.
  11. Don: It would have been a heck of a lot cheaper buying flies than what I have invested in tying equipment and materials. Granted by tying I have the opportunity to tie flies that I can't buy or to tie something that I don't have but when out for the weekend I can tie some up for the next day. The biggest advantage that I attribute to tying my own flies is that once I started to tie I then became more aware of the entomology and the relationship to fly fishing, thus making me a better fisherman. I'm not necessarily the best fisherman but I'm a way better than I would have been if I wouldn't have tied my own flies. Plus this passion has also given me the opportunity to meet some great people I otherwise wouldn't have known. Maxwell: Nope, Don't own a $1000-2000 outfit. Top end would be a couple in the $600 range. Going to have to win the Cane Rod that Don Anderson made that we are raffelling. My intent was that a large number of tyers seem to be cheap. Not that they don't spend a lot of money, lots do but I guess my thoughts are with so many people shopping on the internet etc. for the majority of their stuff they don't realize the impact on the local shop. I realize if you are looking for a certain specific item, this may be your only opportunity to source. My experience is that if you get to know the local people in the shops, their advise and recommendations may save me money rather than buying some new dubbing at a super low price when I probably have 30 plus styles and 15 colors of each (or more I'm afraid to look)
  12. Why is it that a lot of Fly Tyers are so cheap? :derby racer: They would drive across town to buy 1 pack of hooks just to save a nickel. I don't get it. They don't seem to worry about quality, consistancy. I believe all fly tyers would save money if they only bought the materials that they will actually use rather than having boxes and boxes of stuff that they will never use. I count myself in this category. My time is the most expensive part of tying flies.
  13. Can you not find a local builder if you want a custom built rod? Is it that much cheaper? Are the components the same? The components can be as much to do with the overall price of the rod as the blank. Add to that how do you know the quality? 100% warranty is only good while they are still in business, what guarantee do you have? Add the currency exchange and Pay Pal costs, add the brokerage fees and shipping. I won't take the risk. I like the support that the local shops provide to Clubs, Trout Unlimited, Streamwatch, Casting for Life and Project Healing Waters just to name a few. I suggest SHOP AT HOME :derby racer: We all expect alot from our local shops and every time that we go some where else to save a couple of bucks it weakens our local shops. I don't know what industry you work in but for an example If you where an Insurance Agent would you care if we all bought our insurance on the net? Please Look At THE BIG PICTURE. ps: I don't own or work for a shop.
  14. When is the Streamwatch Auction? We want to get items for it. Let's stop poaching!
