  1. I saw something similar years ago coming out near Southland dog park. There were crews there sampling. Just some JA dumping detergent, I’m sure.
  2. Down south there are eroded valley slopes that are packed with fossils. I also heard about a fossilized buffalo skull found by drifters. For anthro stuff, you would be more likely to find them walking to to the river than on it. The river has cut deep into time so the bed and shore were last exposed a long time before people were here. Also note that archeological and paleological finds are protected by the Historical Reasources Act and should be left in place.
  3. No one goes there anymore; it’s too busy.
  4. I could use a learning or two, also.
  5. Mike, send a PM to me with your address and I will mail a copy of Mitchels book. Just need it back from you.
  6. Pull them inside out. Go into a completely dark room with a good flashlight inside them. Circle light spots with a sharpie.
  7. Any temps taken in the Castle drainage lately? Flows seem on the low side compared to the Oldman drainage.
  8. I would rather deal with a fly shop. Thanks for the tips guys. I might start a new thread about lenses. I was angling toward chromapop bronze mirror. Hmm.
  9. Anyone have a preferred Smith dealer in the city? I had a pair self destruct on me. I'd like them looked at and also to grab another pair.
  10. Something is up with your tipper, as mentioned. With stream fishing, it is likely being abraded on your back cast. You should be able to put almost rod breaking pressure on fresh 3x. Speaking of rods, a stiff rod will break tippet a lot easier. Get some bamboo or glass and you'll never break off another fish. Promise.
  11. Sorry. Poor phrasing. I'm looking more for locations and timing. Timing more so. I checked out Weed Lake and Langdon Res last fall, but I think maybe it was a bit late in the year. Considering the extent they have spread I didn't figure it would be hard to find a few, but so far no luck.
  12. Does anyone have any tips for catching these near Calgary? I'm interested in checking on their suitability for table fair.
  13. I've used fold over nail knot in place way. Sturdy and pretty slick. If I recall I used tippet in 3x or so. My preferred way now I think is saw on SFOTF. 20 lb amnesia nail or uni knotted on both ends to the line. Firm up against each other and glue. Pinch the end.
  14. If interested, go into the AEP approvals page and pull the approval for the works. Likely a Water Act approval, but possibly EPEA. It will have specific conditions for instream work, likely turbidity monitoring with specific limits and timelines threasholds. For works like this, a provincial or municipal inspector will be on site regularly checking that all approval conditions are followed.
  15. I have been a dad long enough to fully embrace the nuances of dad-humor. There is usually a few of the IKEA secretary desks on kijiji.
  16. I'd recommend something you can close up, like a roll top or secretary. Keeps materials, hooks, tools, etc. away from kiddos and doggos and out of view of the tidy police. My inlaws dog once ate a piece of red dyed deer off my desk, and left an expensive mess of red dye-arrhea all over the carpet.
  17. I wouldn't hesitate to learn the ropes on the Bow. It is a big, powerful River, but pretty tame. But if you can spare the cash, getting someone who has guided for a long time to teach you will save years of learning. Guides fish with so many inexperienced anglers that they learn to fish with the boat. Add that skill up with a few decent anglers and you will have some good days. Just the few spots they focus on or stop at will save you a season of trial and error. McClennan did it at one point. He has two or three decades of Bow river guiding experience to share.
  18. Or if it was peer reviewed and published. Or repeated. Etc etc. Journalists aren't scientists, but a bit of information othe than a random summary of specific results would be helpful. Rainbow trout are commonly used for bio assays of toxicity. I suspect this study had less to do with trout than general toxicity of completions fluids. It is more concerning that it sounds like the fluid would have passed for toxicity, which is more of a story than was reported on.
  19. I'm so tired of journalism like this. The article itself is fine; just a summary of a recent scientific study. No better or worse than any other media coverage of a scientific study (i.e. piss poor). But the only reason CBC picked up on it is to facilitate public alarm on a hot button topic. I'm no expert on journalistic integrity, but my hunch is that this sort of fear propagation is irresponsible. Did anyone think that completions fluids are good for fish? If you put 25000ppm of coca cola in a fish tank, nothing good is going to happen to them. And a lot of people drink that stuff. This is non-news.
  20. The bow is full of invasive, introduced species. What good is it, if not as a recreational resource? Nada, that's what. Open it. All year. If the trouts can't deal with the pressure, roll it back. It is not a high stakes game. Try to keep things in perspective. We have headwater creeks with pure strain west slope cutthroat that are still open to angling, not to mention grazing, forestry and road/pipeline crossings. Let's prioritize.
  21. What would you call a piece of furniture like that? It is not quite a secretary. I'd consider replacing my roll top with something similar. Smaller foot print.
  22. Absolutely practice with a cartridge. I pulled an old out one for use and the cartridges were expired so I tested it out. Apparently I had packed on a few pounds since the last time I wore it. The straps were a bit snug. The thing went off like a cannon and damn near choked the life out of me!
  23. I don't think those would go for more than $50 on an auction site. They look foshable though. Cast them and see what they are worth to you. Start with a 6 WT and move up or down from there for the fly rod.
  24. My kids always want to get an IKEA tree. Lame. This year I am going to force everyone into forestry to cut one. Mandatory Christmas fun! Grizzwald caroling and all. Patience is not needed if expectations aren't high. You can be in and out of forestry in 10 min if you are fine with a Charlie Brown tree.
