  1. Got the lead, sat back, and Kipper hasn't stopped anything. Hope they can get it back together in the third. Edit: 5-4! 6:42 to go!
  2. If you are doing some sort of tight line nymphing, then fishing by feel or watching the end of your fly line is easier. But if you are dead/drag free drifting, fishing by feel is effectively impossible due to the fact there will certainly be slack. You can still use your fly line, or sometimes even your leader as the "indicator", but you really need to pay attention.and if you are fishing much weight this is even harder. But to your question as to whether you should stick with indicators- I find it overall more effective, but as someone else said, Ive seen people be very effective without them as well. But frankly, the best fishermen I fish with use them much more than they dont.
  3. I've had it with the biased liberal media in my country. Here is a story about Canada and I saw no mention of beer, igloos, dogsleds, moose, or hockey. Unacceptable! http://m.cnn.com/cnn/ne/world/detail/289188
  4. I actually got them yesterday, but didn't open the letter yet. Waiting for the weather to improve.
  5. I use the Medium mostly on The Bow (I have used the tank late in the evening or in really fast water to limit the amount of hangs). On small water/small nymphs I will use the small one, but usually when I would be using the small one I'm using some sort of dry instead.
  6. One of the members of the board, MikeG, sent me several furled leaders for me to try out. I think his theory of asking me to test is: "he may no know what he is doing, but he sure fishes alot." So to help him out with actual knowledge, I gave a few to troutlover to try. I hope he has something intelligent to add. Anyway, here is what I think: I've been using a couple of different nymph leaders, both around 6 ft. One is all mono and one is a braid indicator on top, mono after. Both leaders turn over unbelievably well. The mono sinks pretty fast. I'm thinking of appyling xink to get it to sink even faster, but I don't think that stuff will work on mono? Anyway, I haven't tried the indi part yet because for the most part I've been setting my indi pretty shallow, like 3-5 feet and since I have 3 ft of tippet tied to the bottom of the leader, that means an indi on the leader itself. I'll try the indi hopefully next week. Crow would be nice. One of the other benefits, apart from the wicked turnover, is that the braided leader does not seem to have any memory for the thingamabobber, at least after a couple of hours. Seems like they would last for quite a long time (like as long or longer than my fly line?). Also, I used the all mono at Bullshead in heavy wind with very few, if any, tangles from the wind. Same thing on the Bow. I can hardly think of any tangles (other than some catches on the indi). I also have a short streamer leader, which is pink (mike claims that fish can't see it. I think he's laughing at me.) Again, casts and turns over great. Can't say much of anything else as I've been struggling with streamers lately. The only issue I have had is torque. But a quick stretch of the leader and all is good again. I also have a couple of thread 8 or 9 ft leaders for dry fly fishing. I just put some waterproofing on them tonite. Can't wait to try them out. So far, I really like these leaders. And Mike seems to like making them, so win-win for me!! Mike-I do want to tell you how much I appreciate you making these. They are fun to fish with.
  7. Ok, that's just bragging. Did I sound jealous there? I wonder if it's because I'm not a member yet. Congrats!
  8. Tough question. After catching several of either species, I always want to catch the other just for the diversity. But if you told me I could only catch one? Give me a big rainbow when they are at their peak. I remember a 22" during runoff last year that hit my backing in like 5 seconds. Like hooking onto a rocketship. They are just a riot to catch.
  9. This is a quote from Kenny Perry, several days after he lost the Masters: "I hadn't been playing like that all week. I was playing conservative aggressive, if there is such a word. And I was playing great golf. Then all of a sudden, when I knew I had to make two pars, I got defensive. All of a sudden, I tried to hang on. That's the worst thing you can do in golf. When you start to hang on, bad things happen in golf." When you start to hang on, bad things happen in hockey too. I was at the game last night. At no point did it look to me like the Flames were trying to hang on. They played "conservative aggressive" the entire game (or maybe just aggressive aggressive), and were never really challenged in the 3rd. Everyone is praising Kipper, and he did save their asses in the 1st. But I thought the Flames did a great job of keeping the shots to the outside and giving Kipper a view of everything in the 2nd and 3rd. Drew is right, that's how you beat the Blackhawks.
  10. One thing I find interesting is when hockey is discussed, very rarely do people talk about matchups. I don't know why that is. In basketball, and even football from time to time, how one team matches up with the other is dissected. In hockey, not so much. So I will try: Chicago is a TERRIBLE matchup for the Flames, particularly when they are missing a key defenceman. They have no answer for the speed/skill of Chicago's young guns. Their only hope in my limited view of the game is to try to maintain their physical play throughout the game. It has put them in the lead in both games, and in both games when their physical play stopped, the 'hawks came back. I don't think it is an effort thing at all. As anyone who has played any sport can tell you-if you have a sizable lead at any point in a game or a late lead, it is hard not to mentally change focus. You don't do it on purpose, it just happens. Calgary has to fight the temptation to ever sit back against this team. If they don't take the action to Chicago, they have no hope. (and they may not have much even then)
  11. Forestry trunk road is gravel, except paved through K-Country. All of the Bow access points south of the city are gravel, I think. I think the back country map books tells you which are paved and which are not?
  12. Not a bad place to leave it as that's where I bought it in the first place. I think it was originally designed to place in deer. And I do fish at the confluence from time to time and from what I understand, that's the same as fishing at an aquarium! Nice video as always Mr. Jones.
  13. Jay, Neither link seems to be working. I'm sure it's a Youtube problem. I know you wouldn't have locked me out just because I put that GPS chip in your dog......
  14. You're only 40? Man, I thought you were older! Happy Birtday buddy! Give me a shout if you ever make it to civilization.
  15. You should have thought about the t-shirt Taco. It was probably on sale.
  16. My first trip on The Bow was with Dee. I had never even touched a fly rod before that day. Caught a fish on my second cast with a streamer. I called it a "suicide fish." Dee is just fantastic. I ended up catching like 5 or 6 doing hopper/dropper (though I didn't know a hopper from a dropper then) that day which I though was awesome considering my casting skills were ummmm, limited. I ldr'd a bunch more. That day totally hooked my on fly fishing. Listen and you will certainly learn.
  17. Interesting writing style. One sentence per paragraph. Could have guessed he was from Sun Media. Don't know what he is so mad about. If it reduces squatters, it can't be bad. All kidding aside, weren't the most popular campsites mostly reservation only anyway? What is the difference if it's telephone or on-line? I just reserved 3 days in the group spot and Dinosaur Provincial with no problem, but I did it over the phone. It would have been just as easy on-line, except I wouldn't have had the pleasure of talking to the very pleasant staff (I'm serious when I say that, they were very nice). I think on-line should work well? Maybe I'm just naive.
  18. Nice! Looks like she might have had a growth spurt Max!
  19. That was cool. But I don't know why everyone is so surprised when such a big voice comes out of someone that is slightly less than attractive. At least the blonde judge didn't cry this time! Paul Potts turned out to be a bit more than a cell phone salesman. From wiki: During the programme there was some controversy as to the "undiscovered" nature of Potts' talent. He was portrayed on the show as simply a mobile-phone salesman, whereas he had in fact appeared in six amateur opera productions and in a concert for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and had plans for a summer tour with that Orchestra. Potts responded to his critics saying that he had not claimed to be completely untutored, that he had never performed any concert for pay and was therefore amateur and that the lessons he had received in Italy had been paid for from his own savings. Whatever though. He can sure sing. As can Miss Susan it seems.
  20. Maybe you should alert the media.
  21. I didn't really notice any anti-Cabrera sentiment-and I was pulling for him. But could be I'm biased myself.... Phil on the other hand had the opportunity to do something truly truly special. 30 on the front at Augusta? Are you freakin' kidding me? But the sploosh into Rae's Creek on 12 really seemed to change his round. His iron shot on 15 was a thing of beauty-but Tigers putt confused him and once that eagle slid by that was it. Fun tournament! Good for Cabrera. World class save from the trees.

  23. I'm not going to get into a global warming debate with you. It's pointless for both of us. I trust your sources just as much as you trust mine. Do I think the media can fabricate a story where there isn't one? Again, there is no "thing" as the media. Do I think a member of the media can? Well of course. People will do things to get ahead in every industry. Usually they are found out, sometimes they are not. A better question is do I think this story is a case of a story made up where there isn't one? I'm not all that familiar with the particulars other than there are two girls, one needs a heart I think and the donor is hanging on when her doctors did not think she would. I'm not even sure who's father went to the media (or I should say a member of the media) with this. A story was probably then put out, interest was generated, and the story spiraled out of control as these things are prone to do. So there is definitely a story there. Do I think it is appropriate? No, I don't. But I don't know what you do about it. If enough people are interested then someone will keep the story out in the open. If interest wanes, then the story will run it's course. The "media" is a reflection of society, not the other way around. For the most part the various main stream outlets provide an incredibly valuable service. Do they over sensationalize things? Well of course. And people eat it up. Who's fault is that?
  24. A stinger hook would never be a circle hook, they are always J-hooks or even trebles. A circle hook wouldn't work as a stinger as the point is turned back in on itself toward the shank (hence the name circle hook). They are used quite often when using natural bait because they almost completely eliminate gut hooked fish. If the fish swallows the bait, the hook cannot catch on anything internal. The gap of the hook catches on the side of the mouth on the way out and rotates the point into place by tension. You don't jerk to set the hook, just apply tension and the fish hooks itself. I used them all the time when fishing with bait and cannot think of a single time the fish was hooked anywhere but in the side of the mouth. You missed a lot of fish with them though, but if you were practicing catch and release they were priceless. When my dad started doing catch and release I told him about circle hooks. He started using them and said "if you are fishing for fun, use a circle hook. If you are fishing for food use a treble hook." All that said, I have a hard time seeing how they could be effective as they are advertising for this system. The best way to hook a fish using a circle hook is the steady application of force against the fish. The worst way was to quickly set the hook. They would not rotate properly and just come out of the fish's mouth. But as a foul hooking device, they would be useless. Far far less effective than say that 2nd or 3rd fly in a 3 nymph system.
