Need Some New Reading Material
reevesr1 replied to cdock's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Love Ames and Geirach. I read a book called The River Why by David James Duncan (bcube lent it to me) that I really liked. Bcube actually has a book of mine (not the Ames one Brent, the other one) that I can't remember the name or author. If he is around, maybe he can put the title and author up. It's really good as well. -
Yowza! Fantastic fish.

So I fished water this morning that I fish quite often. While it doesn't particularly lend itself to czech nymphing, the lesson did remind me to really fish the water close to me hard. So I high sticked (stuck?) the run much more thoroughly than I normally do. And hello Brown Trout! Not that I hooked more fish than I normally do, but I did hook bigger fish. Anyway, I highly recommend this course to anyone. It will teach you to look at water a bit differently. All that said, I have some really fast water in mind for this.........

Oh, ok then. Nothing like forgoing the explanation when brevity will do.

Now This Makes Me Laugh

[[insert raspy inhale voice]] Fixed it dude. -
My wife is starting to get fed up with the early morning fishing (if I went in the evening, I'd get 0 sleep!). She does not care that I'm tired at work, but that I'm tired at home. If this stupid river would just stop fishing so damn good!!

So apparently Marc Emery, the "Prince of Pot" is going to jail in the US for distributing pot a,d money laundering. Here are a couple of quotes "Sometimes being in jail, the right person like me can insire people to get angry and to get motivated, to do something to take up the cause.". Cuz as everyone knows, pot smokers are known for their anger and motivation! And this gem: "I'm always shocked how many people in our movement still don't vote, still don't think it is worthwhile." Really Marc? Out of curiosity, have you ever spoke to anyone in your movement? Would have thought you may have picked up on a touch of apathy. Im just sayin. No offense to some members here, but seriously. This guy is utterly hysterical.

Was taught the same thing in saltwater fishing. Strip strike HARD, then lift. It takes me a few fish to remember that. But typically in saltwater fishing, you are significantly farther from your quarry than in fishing pools for bullies. I wonder if proximity to the fish changes the need for the strip set (less stretch, more direct contact)? But the correlation between a bony mouthed tarpon and a bony mouthed bull trout is interesting. I'll have to remember to try that.

The truth is that if it hadn't been a "class", we surely would have switched. That said, I don't think it is an accident that we got several pretty pretty large fish for the body of water AFTER groups had been through that water. And yeah Jay, that was a pig of a rainbow. Tim seemed surprised that it was pulling as hard as it was. When I went down below and saw it, I said "you are going to be shocked at how big this fish is!!" But really, most of them were fat-what with chowing down on stones and salmonflies!!

Fished with the 10 footer on the Crow, czech nymping and back on the Bow this morning high sticking, roll casting, and tossing some long casts at some outer seams. Love the rod! I got to handle a really nice, fat 22" brown with it this morning. Fun, fun, fun.

Nice start to the season guys!

Thanks for the pics marc. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm better looking low holing, head of run hogging, or hole jumping. That Amundson looks good, don't it! I've been looking for a picture of you with a fish. Can't seem to find one.

I think that guy had more hair! And the low holing didn't work.

Hit the Crow today to learn how to Czech Nymph with John Bransfield teaching. I was joined by reellife (tim) and headscan (marc). We had a blast learning this technique on this gorgeous body of water. Only problem was all the damn hatches going on distracting us! Actually, it is not easy, nor effective to cast salmon flies on a like 20 ft mono leader with 6 lb maxima (and a 10 ft 6 wt rod!!) Got some refusals and a couple of misses, but mostly we did stick with the nymphing and lots of fish, some very nice, were caught. The biggest was caught by Tim, and is pictured below along with some other shots from the day. I'm sure Marc and Tim have more. Thanks guys for the great time, and thanks John for the lesson. BTW, I HIGHLY recommend taking this course as it it highly effective and goes to help fund the Junior National Team; Finally, ignore any forthcoming posts about "low holing" or 'hole jumping" or "head of run hogging." First stop: The boys rigging up: Hard to nymph with these flying around...... A little rain never hurt anyone, but hail can be tough on the fly rod! Tim's big fish:

Here is what she looks like all 'bowed up:

Yes, the rod is a custom build. I did not think it was the still water series, but when I look on their website it looks like the stillwater is the only 10 footer. Whatever the case, I got the blank sent to me directly from Jack. I saw on their website that Wholesale carries them?

Sorry about that, don't know why I thought Shaw. Whatever the case, I hope I get up to his neck of the woods someday and do me some BC lake fishin'! Got the rod out today on the Bow for a morning session. Very, very happy with it. I did quite a bit of roll casting with it, and was very pleased with the results. I also landed around 10 trout, so was pretty happy about that as well. Sure was nice having the extra foot to mend with. I'll have some photos later.

Appropriate on a couple of levels. A 10 ft for czech nymphing- and a Wind Warrior for the Crow. Perfec

Lets see: 3 wt TFO Finesse 5 wt TFO Sig series (big yellow) 5 wt 10 ft Amundson Wind Warrior 6 wt Traveler from Wayne Hanson (his store rod, love it by the way-it is my go to rod for the bow) 8 wt TFO TiCr (I think) I've also test driven a couple of Guidelines and had a 10 ft 6 wt Bow River Special from G&L Flycraft for a couple of weeks (an absolutely fabulous rod-same rod hawgstoppah uses-for anyone looking for a custom fly rod, I couldn't recommend it more). How many reels is another question entirely!

A workmate just handed me my new Amundson 10 ft 4 pc 5 wt Wind Warrior he assembled. Looks absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see what it looks like all bowed up tomorrow!! Thanks to Jack Shaw for supplying the blank so quickly! Fabulous customer service.

Not denying that "women in waders" is a beautiful phrase, but when I looked at the contest it does look like they are looking for someone who is not that experienced aren't they? I've heard second hand of your fishing skills, and from what I understand they are formidable!

Landed a 25" redfish on a 5 wt, no problem (and trust me, redfish pull way harder than any pike). Problem with the 5 wt, as tungsten said, was the wind, not fighting the fish.

Thanks for the laugh Paul!

Is it bitching and complaining when you bitch and complain about the bitchers and complainers? Seems we have more than one or two on this site (bitchers and complainers I mean). I call them "Black Holes of Fun," you know, whenever they see fun they are compelled to suck it in and not let it back out.
