  1. I sure spent a lot of time around what is now Fourchon. Hundreds of trips with my dad and brother. Can't believe there are still charter captains that stupid. The fines will be stiff, and if memory serves, will be levied per fish over the limit. I hope so. Managing the Red Snapper fishery is a delicate subject. Violators need to be made examples of. Really quick Bayou LaFourche story: When I was about 12, my dad, brother and I were making a trip the the rigs about 12 miles (I think) out into the gulf, leaving out of Bayou LaFourche. We were in a 18 ft boat with a 50 HP Merc on the back. It was BLOWING! As we are making our way into the rollers at the mouth of the Bayou, a much larger boat is coming in, waving their arms shouting "Its too rough, go back" Dad replies "It's just right!" We make it out to the rigs, and get on the snapper. Unfortunately, my brother and I get on our knees and chum for the next several hours. Dad, utilizing all his compassion, allows us to stop fishing when we are actively puking. Otherwise, we had to fish (we sold our excess back in those days. Don't judge, different times). We probably caught 200-300 lb of snapper that day. I also probably lost 50% of my body weight! I hate snapper fishing to this day. Still love to eat them though. Hijack over.
  2. Lynn, Mike, and Hayden, Jackie and I would like to send our heart felt condolences to your family. We hope this week is one you can cherish. You guys will be in our prayers. All the best, Rick and Jackie
  3. Don't be afraid to use the rubber as a tail as well. I used one recently and it was a' slammin'.
  4. So change #1 is: Date change to Aug 23 so Brownstone can participate and to stop Teck from complaining!! Seriously, we decided that late Aug might be a better date as everyone will have had several cracks at their favorite streams down south and it might be a good idea to give the fish a bit of a Saturday off in the heat of the summer. Hopefully this is the final date, but I ain't promising anything!!
  5. Sure wish I could make it, but divorce would follow. Missing one's own 20th anniversary would be a problem. I have a 9 ft Outcast Pontoon with all the stuff ( but a crappy anchor) if anyone wants to borrow it for the fish out. Let me know. I live in Chaparral, so it is on the way out of town. Might be nice to have an extra on there for anyone who wants to use it.
  6. what I want to know is what is the penalty for catching live bugs and sticking hooks in them? Wow.
  7. Guinness? Is that some sort of Scotch Whiskey or something? I first tasted Guinness in Pau, France of all places. I'd never tried it before because I couldn't get over the look of it. Suffice it to say, i cursed myself for my lifelong stupidity on the first sip. Instantly my beer of choice. 1 week later, I was in Aberdeen. It was like it was a different beer, much smoother. (Every time I taste one on this side of the pond, I'm always a bit disappointed from remembering how good it was in Scotland.) My friend from Aberdeen, who had been with me in Pau, said that the change in quality from Pau to Aberdeen was nothing like the change from Aberdeen to Dublin. I will one day go to Dublin for the express purpose of tilting a properly poured pint of positively pure Guinness! I can also confidently state that the bliss I will feel upon lifting that pint will pale in comparison to the bliss you will feel upon hooking your first 18" Bow River Bullet!!
  8. I may be wrong about this, but I think the sink because their feathers absorb the oil (they are water resistant, not oil resistant), they loose their buoyancy, can't fly, and sink.
  9. So we have tentatively decided on July 26. Stay tuned, we'll have an official announcement soon.
  10. Hell, I voted for one of them. Three times, once for prez and twice as vp. I could very well be the only white, male, Texan engineer who can make that statement. I don't know how many of you ever use the Urban Legend website to debunk outrageous stories circulating the internet. My favorite urban legend is "Al Gore said he invented the internet." Al Gore was involved in approving funding early internet research, and in fact, has been honored for the fact. Al Gore said he helped CREATE the internet. Much like Eisenhower could have said "I helped CREATE the Interstate Highway system." Big difference. Al Gore Urban Myth Truth be known, I like Al Gore. Always have. I think his heart is in the right place. I have no idea whether or not he is correct in his views on GW. But I personally do not believe he is doing it for any reason other than he believes he is doing it to help. I also believe he needs to change his personal footprint as well. Wish he would have won 8 yrs ago. My homeland would almost certainly be in a better place. Could hardly have done worse.
  11. Yeah, but each side does this. They take any piece of information that supports their belief and beats everyone over the head with it. I mean both sides of any debate. Particularly any debate that is extremely difficult, if not completely impossible, to prove one way or the other. Unfortunately, like politics these days, environmentalism as a whole and GW specifically has become more like a religion than an issue. Two sides standing on opposite sides of the proverbial road shouting slogans at each other. Each side convinced the other is 100% wrong all the time and they are 100% right all the time. And dryfly is completely correct. We all have a footprint and should do what we can to minimize it, within reason. And each of us defines what is "within reason" Oh and castus-the older, dirtier and less well maintained is me!!
  12. I didn't say the same. I said closer to the same. Like books, cars, etc. 50% more here is indefensible. Unless of course we continue to pay it. Marvels of capitalism.
  13. Hell Rich, that one's easy, but it depends on the definer. For example, since you are more ecologically conscious than I, you my friend are an eco-weenie. Since dryfly is less environmentally conscious than I in a GW sense, he is a planet raper. (remember, this is an example, not a declaration! ) I on the other hand am completely fair and balanced in my approach to the environment. But your definition is probably different: David Suziki is more environmentally conscious than you (I think) and is therefore an eco-weenie I am less conscious, and a planet raper You are completely fair and balanced. See how it works? Simple, yet terribly complicated.
  14. 1.5 to 2 yrs of excess stock? I hope the have better inventory control than that.
  15. You guys have just explained today. Slow water, 3 ft deep, well inside the seam. Lots of hits inside my rod, <5 ft from my feet. I also found that I had to really, really be on bottom. I tried to use a lightly weighted worm because the water was so slow and I was striking at every twitch, which was mostly bottom. Got to really be a pain. So I put on the lighter worm. Didn't tap bottom nearly as often. Also didn't hook nearly as many fish. Went back to the heavy worm. Still a pain, but more fishies for sure! Brownstone, I hate to disagree, but there are no catchable fish on the bow during runoff. All people need to concentrate on improving their golf game.
  16. I absolutely love my TFO rods and their warranty, but their decision not to adjust Canadian pricing to get significantly closer to US following the runup of the Canadian dollar is truly puzzling to me.
  17. You are right about that! I, like everyone else, am feeling pain at the pump. Particularly when oil is going up more on speculation (read: emotion) than anything else. But I will say it is not the responsibility of the oil refiners to lower margins because the cost of their feed stock is going up. But it don't stop it from suckin'. As far as the eco weenies finding fault: True. But I can make the same observation about many who argue the other side as well......
  18. So, eating seems to be dangerous. But on the bright side, no problem with getting a tattoo!
  19. Teck, Absolutely nothing has been decided yet. We are trying to consolidate our schedules.
  20. Flyangler, That would be fantastic. We are at least 6 weeks away. We are trying to get a date pinned down, but right now I would say late July at the earliest (post run-off and Stampede). Do you need me to do anything to get this rolling? PM me.
  21. Another difference is, if Taco ever said "I'd like to bust your knee caps", your fear factor should jump up a little bit. I've never caught a smallmouth. I grew up chasing saltwater fish in the US, and did go largemouth fishing from time to time. Unlike the vast majority of my brethren, I didn't find it all that fun. Probably because to crank them out of the heavy cover you had to use such heavy gear. The few times I caught them on lighter tackle, it was a kick. Catching one (a largemouth) on a fly rod would be a blast. And from what I've seen on the fishing shows, the smallies fight much harder. Next time I'm in the BC interior I'll certainly take a day to try it out.
  22. Clive, I understand people's aversion to the "obscene" profits the oil companies are making. Sounds like everyone is getting screwed. You cited Shell's profits in Q1. This is Shell's North American President's reply to a reporters question: "Look at our revenues and our income for the last quarter. If we had made $7.8 million on $114 million of revenue, nobody would call that excessive, because that's 7½ percent. We made $7.8 billion profit on $114 billion revenue -- same 7½ percent. So to me that is not an excessive number when banks and pharmaceuticals and IT companies earn a whole lot more." Of course the statement is self serving, but 7.5% profit isn't that big a number. Now 114Billion is! Almost all of my oil patch work has been in Canada. Several years ago I went down to the States to help train on one of our new systems. I was shocked at the difference in the states. Everything was dirtier, older, less well maintained, etc. Environmentally, Canada is orders of magnitudes over what I saw in the Northern US. While there is lots still to do, you guys really are on the right track.
  23. Isn't it funny how this almost instantly turned into a Big Oil/GW debate? The company screwed up, hopefully they will fix it and move on. Not every event has to be turned into a oil good/oil bad, gw true/gw false debate, does it? Clive, If we can promise to play nice, I'd love to sit down over a beer to discuss sometimes!
  24. While I could be led to believe that the company in question has made significant efforts to keep birds off the ponds, when they fail they need to be seriously held to task. It is not a valid argument to compare ducks landing in a toxic tailings pond to a botulism outbreak. Unless I am missing something? However, "Failed because of snow" does not mean they failed to take snow into account. Tires "fail because of nails", electronics "fail because of vibration." Does not mean they did not design for these occurrences, just that it was the failure mechanism. The question is what they failed to take into account, and was it realistically preventable.
  25. I don't want to put the kibosh on any good ideas, but I'm personally not interested in putting this together for another river. Not because I don't think it's a good idea, but from a logistics standpoint. I'd rather keep it close to home. That said, if someone wants to organize for another river, please have at it. They could use it too.
