  1. Al, Bring any tarpon eggs back? Those suckers will go into some pretty brackish water. Might want to drop a few in Outpost, you know, as an experiment. Just out of curiosity, I know someone already asked, but how good is the fishing from shore? I can bring my pontoon, but I have the wife and 3 kids to consider, and it would be nice to get them on a few.
  2. Gravelman, I'm noting a bit of ambivalence in your feelings for Timmies. How do you really feel?
  3. Ed, Almost exactly 2 CAD dollars for 1 GBP, so $258.00 CAD
  4. The wife said: "Sounds like fun" I'm in.
  5. Most high priced waders are excellent. When you pay for quality, typically you get it. That does not mean that there are not less expensive options, which in some cases can be as good. If you know someone who has had a good experience with a less expensive option, it gives you a level of comfort if you choose to go with the less expensive option. Snowbee sounds like an option. I didn't see the prices, but I know Islandguy fishes a lot and I trust his opinion. The primary one being "they do not leak." I also think you would be hard pressed to find many on this forum (Max, LK2, toolman, BBB, and maybe a few others) who have fished around here than I have this winter. I also think you would have an even harder time finding someone more clumsy on the water! The waders I use are less expensive, I've beat them up, and they do not leak. In my best Forest Gump accent "that's all I have to say about that."
  6. Well, the good news is it's really cold this morning, so no fishing anyway. Great story, thanks for the early morning laughs. I think we've all had that day. I do have one question: How tall is your truck?? Tall enough to clear a 5 gallon water bottle apparently!!
  7. I have the waders Troutlover is talking about. Milano is the company. I think Hanson's is selling them for $239 if you say you heard about it on the board. They are breathable, built in belt, lined front pouch, inner zipper pouch. Very well constructed. I've used mine all winter, no leaks. I love them, they've replaced my Simms. 1 yr warranty.
  8. Don, I fully intend to watch. I`m really not as conservative as I pretend sometimes!
  9. Sorry about that Ed, but I only have like a dozen nymphs left!

    Cuba Si!

Just awesome Clive! Gotta tell a very quick story. There used to be (back in the 60s) millions of Tarpon in Galveston bay in the fall. Spawning I think. Dad said no one really fished for them because you couldn't eat them. But he said the first time he hooked one he didn't care if you could eat them or not. First really big one, 200lb class fish, he hooked ran straight behind the boat, or so they thought. The first jump was perpendicular to the boat, 80 yds out. The fish was running so fast that the line was essentially a big parabola in the water. Anyway, he ended up loosing him when the fish ran under a bridge and the line hit a piling and cut off. Did I mention that this was after two hours? That had to suck. Haven't been tarpon in any number in Texas in years, though they are starting to make a small comeback. Water got too polluted. But it is coming back. Maybe I'll take you boys down for a trout and redfish run in the fall, and we'll see if we can jump us some of those big scaly suckers. Maybe some big sharks just for fun. I'd go to Cuba, but I can't. Drats.

    Cuba Si 2

Nothing in the whole world like big fish slammin' topwaters!! I've never caught a tarpon or a bonefish (not many opportunities in Texas or Louisiana), so you can't imagine how envious I am. Great job Al!
  12. Taco, Do you think they could catch cutties on remote mountain streams? Like to help me experiment?
  13. Its on again Sunday night on CBC Newsworld at 6 PM. Reading the synopsis, it looks very balanced. As long as your version of balance leans WAY to the left! Here is a balanced quote: "As Fort McMurray bursts at the seams, children from Thunder Bay to Cape Breton are made tar-sands orphans by their migrant-worker parents. Canada's petrodollar breaks the back of the manufacturing economy in the East. Cancer rates skyrocket downstream of Fort McMurray while Rocky Mountain glaciers melt and disappear. And all the while, Alberta crude goes south to U.S. markets while Eastern Canada pays ever more for insecure Middle East oil." Doom, despair, and agony on me! Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
  14. So I just ordered to restock my lost nymph box. 125 or so flies coming my way. Hope I like 'em!
  15. I think horsepower is right up there with air bags, seatbelts, and front and rear crumple zones when talking about a vehicles 5 star safety rating. Sorry, couldn't resist, but I tried to, I promise! All kidding aside, if you ever want to read a discussion of how safety is used as a marketing tool, read a book called Freakonomics by Steve Levitt and Steve Dubner. Its actually a very enjoyable read and will certainly make you look at things with a different perspective. On the horsepower issue: when used correctly, you are absolutely correct, horsepower can be used to get you out of sticky situations. However for many, knowing they have the horsepower gives them the false confidence that allows them to put themselves in sticky situations. I bet if there was a study of accident rates and horsepower, you would find the two correlated. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. I just find this topic interesting.
  16. I was there last night. Enjoyed the show and will probably buy one or more of the movies, particularly the Mongolia one. I did do a quick check on fishing in Bristol Bay. 10K or so would do it for a week. Not cheap, but sure looks fun!
  17. Hey Brent, Did you notice who sponsored the movies? Also, when you pay for their waders, you're paying for the advertising as well.
  18. Now Brent, you kniow I'd never disagree with you.... Warranty is a year I've had one of their rods for about a year, broke it twice (both totally my fault) and they replaced both times no prob, and I think no charge. I've owned a few waders in my time and these are sweet, and at 250 bucks, way less expensive for similar features. That said, please don't think I'm doggin Simms or Patagonia. I'm not, they make great stuff. But just remember when they give you a long warranty, its basically an insurance policy on their part hidden in the price. nothing is free!
  19. This morning I drove past the Tim Horton's on 130 Ave just off the Deerfoot, on my way to the bank to get some cash. Noticed the line was shorter than normal. Got my money, and drove down to the McDs to get my Sausage and Egg McMuffin and large coffee. There was a line. First time ever. I blame myself for posting about McDs coffee on this website. I've gone and ruined it for everyone. Stupid website.
  20. Not trying to start a fight. And I fully understand my somewhat (or fully) hypocritical stance. I think it could have more to do with relationships. When I'm dealing with the smaller shops, I know my individual sale means more than at Wholesale. I've really gotten to know the owners at a couple of fly shops , so I would feel I was cheating if I tried stuff their and bought online. So back on topic: Here is some free advertising for one of our local shops. I bought some waders by a company called Mirano from Hanson's. I tested them over the winter and bought the test pair. They are less expensive than more name brands (I also have a pair of Simm's), but the quality is fantastic. I've worn mine probably 20 times this winter and love them.
  21. Ooh, this one could get touchy, but... I have to agree with Rusty, mostly. I have a hard time going into small Brick and Mortar stores, trying on their stuff, and buying online. I find myself accepting that I have to pay a bit more for stuff in the smaller stores because they have overhead the online places don't. And I need the small stores to stay around for when I need something fast. And while I agree with 1-4 above, and that it is capitalism, it is short sighted to not purchase from your local store. You really do need them around. And they can't compete on price with American on line shops. That said, I have no issue trying it on at a big box store, and buying it somewhere else online. Maybe because the big box stores have on line options as well as physical locations.
  22. Hydro, You got the nuts and bolts of it. Now just make up a bunch of *hit before and after! Nice story. Hell of a lot more dangerous in the mountains than my little wading episode!
  23. James Earl Jones, line is at 1:40 or so. People Will Come Ray
  24. What's up with that? Coffee was created to give man something to "go get" on a Saturday morning. Satisfies that hunter gatherer instinct. What's the fun of making it at home when you can overpay and/or get irritated at long lines.
  25. But the line really goes fast. I've heard that BV is the busiest Tim Horton's in the country. There is routinely 4-6 people taking orders there. FC is horrible. Terrible physical location, with slow staff added in for fun. I rarely go to Tim's. It's a cultural phenom, and I'm not Canadian. I'm with Taco (twice in one day Taco!), McD's coffee is better. Here is a line from MSN Money: McDonald's introduced a line of premium coffee that earned first place in this month's Consumer Reports issue for best in coffee. The brand beat out Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts and Burger King (BKC, news, msgs) for both taste and value. No line up either!
