hydropsyche Posted February 19, 2009 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I shopped the BassPro in Michigan and the fly fishing section really, really sucked. 200 million square feet of hunting, camping and clothing and the "other" fishing, but pitiful on our love. No lie, they had a hut about 1000 sq feet dedicated to flyfishing. Michigan has some great flyfishing water too, so you'd think??? bighopper Posted February 19, 2009 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I visited the Bass Pro Shop in Las Vegas, which is actually connected to the Silverton Casino/Hotel. The fly fishing section seemed to be OK. The wall on one side was largely a giant glassed-in aquarium filled with an impressive population of large rainbow and brown trout. Brownstone Posted February 19, 2009 Share Posted February 19, 2009 can't wait I got a gift certificate for xmas .. as for your guys who think that big ass building is gonna be full of fly fishing gear, your gonna be dissapointed, Ive been in a few and best I can say is it is very similar to Wholesale Sports only bigger but with more "attractions" (I'll call them for lack of a better word). BPS will not offer much competition to your local fly-shops, but will be a larger threat to places like Wholesale Sports, The Fishing Hole, Campers Village, MEC etc. Its an all under one roof place, not a fly shop. acurrie Posted February 19, 2009 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I've never been in a Bass pro shop, but have been in Cabela's many times, and once you get over the shock and awe of the size it's really not that impressive (In terms of the fly fishing section). Did some quick math and you saying you can not live in Calgary unless you are making 935 a week (1870 every two week for 140hrs) before taxes? So you better be renting a 1 bedroom apartment for less than $600 month, eat only $200 a month in grocery, have no car payment, pay very little insurance and not purchase to many items you dont need. I understand that BassPro sets up the stores to serve the market they are in, so the store here will be different from one in Michigan or other stores out there. I'd imagine they will see what sells and make adjustments accordingly. I agree, the setup is similar to that of Wholesale sports where the flyfishing gear is tucked away in large exhibit like room area, but there was more than enough space and the selection was excellent. Great varieties of tying materials, rods, reels, waders, float tubes/pontoon boats etc. The prices however were no better than what you'd expect to pay here. Not to mention there is a stream flowing throughout the store with Rainbows, Brookies, and Brown Trout that they feed twice daily and encourage participation from the kids. Really cool setup. I am starting to get sick of odering from the internet becasue the stores here dont have anything for big pike /musky lures. Its amazing the amount of pike fishing we have here but the stores dont carry any of it, they must figure knowone is going to spend $20+ for a lure. murray Posted February 20, 2009 Share Posted February 20, 2009 I agree with the other comments about the Fly Fishing section being smaller and tucked away in the corner. I've been in two of their stores, one in Nashville and the other in Las Vegas. Both stores were set up very similar. That being said, they did have a pretty good selection of rods and such. The prices were O.K. but not blow your mind cheap. They both had a fairly decent selection of tying material but not better than any of the dedicated shops already here. My impression of both stores that I was in was lots of clothing, shirts,outer wear, rain wear etc. lots of electronics, fish finders and the like and lots of other fishing gear(spinning,spin cast and big fish tackle. They also had a pretty big selection of big ticket items like boats,motors and trailer packages. These(the boats) were the only things I looked at that seemed like a great deal. When it's all said and done, you bet, I'll certainly stop in to check it out but it will never replace the stores that I already shop in. Fish Tales, Country Pleasures, Russells, Wholesale Sports and The Fishing Hole. These fine stores have always treated me well and I will continue to support them.
