troutlover Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Day 1: Drove ten hours it was dark no pictures today. Arrived at 2 am. Sleeping at a questionable Super 8. Today we hunt trouts, tonight I try to figure out how to post pictures (this might be a very short thread). The goal for the next six days. Catch enough fish to hold me over to spring time in Calgary, to avoid break down of my soul! ( dramatic I know, but true) stay tuned there might be pictures. 2 Quote
troutlover Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Day 2: Yikes! it was cold this morning. We knew we would have to get on the river early to be on the water we wanted. I laugh to myself when i her guys talk about how crowded the Bow river is> The Bow river is solitude compared to down here. In order to get good real estate we suffered through a couple hours of slush in the morning. Things were really slow. Then as the slush stopped coming so did the fish goodflymclovin had 6 in a row and i knew it was game on! soon everyone was into some nice fish Was a solid day and the therapy has begun i hope we continue to have such great success there was several dozen fish caught today. I was amazed at the fight these fish had for the temp of the water. I got schooled a couple times. 7 Quote
Popular Post troutlover Posted March 9, 2015 Author Popular Post Posted March 9, 2015 Day 3 Well the fishing was so great we had to go back to the location we were at yesterday but it was Saturday and again getting there early would be key. We got there at 8am and it was COLD. No slush on the water so we started to fish and hoped for some early morning success but the fish were asleep and our feet froze after a half hour so we decided to wait for it to warm up a bit and we warmed our toes by the fire The traffic on the river was insane we were across from a boat launch and there was a steady stream of drift boats launched throughout the day. Lots of people on the shore we had a nice run tied up with three of us and we rotated throughout the day and had another day of dozens of fish. I took a few photos of one to remember. Brow trout are a special suprise on a section of this river that sees mostly rainbow trout. Many of the fish are a standard size of 15 to 18 inches beautiful color and FULL of fight i am amazed at the pull of these fish! Today something special happened i caught the fish of a lifetime i dont know if the pictures will show it but it was HUGE. He took what we call a purple Mailey (named after Mike Mailey who shared it with us) This fly absolutely SLAYS Idaho Rainbows. The fish came up and thrashed the surface immediately but i didnt see it. Then it started to PULL and i mean it pulled hard. Really I thought the i had a fish foul hooked. It was a game of me pulling a hard as i dared and this fish just sitting and holding finally the fish started to move and i was able to put some side pressure on it . It finally broke surface again and i saw the dorsal fin WHAT! is that thing! my heart started to race i had confirmation this is not a fish i wanted to lose. By that time goodflymclovin was ther with video and he got a better look at the fish and he was knid enough to mention " oh man the hook is just in the tip of his nose! don't horse him!" now my heart is really going with a bit more firm pressure fish head finally comes up and i scoop him into the net and let out a whoop and laugh. It was Epic. Have a look. There were a couple fish in the class caught this day. Day 3 will be remembered for a long time. 11 Quote
troutlover Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Day 4 Today we needed a change of scenery so we headed to the high alpine. We didn't know how the fishing would be or if there would be too much snow but we wanted to get into a section of the river that went through a box canyon and had a reputation of being beautiful. We got a later start today and the weather was perfect. We were into fish right away and i was thinking we are in for another special day. These fish have a harder winter than the fish on the lower section of the river they are noticeably skinnier but WOW are they ever beautiful! Lots of walking on this section, a steep gradient. Lots of pocket water and its amazing where these fish materialize out of. The tricky part is this river is full of huge boulders of lava rock and if you don't handle the fish they cant cut you off quickly. Here is a picture of a nice fish i really like the band of red on this fish. And another pretty nice couple of fish I have to mention that goodflymclovin caught an absolute slab there is a clip on instagram of it and a bunch of other clips from this trip at Mogum50 or search #slabracadabra. This section of the river has given up some real monsters in years past, it was cool to listen to the stories of goodflymclovin who grew up in this area and has stories of rainbows over 25 inches and over 15 lbs. Day 4 is going to be great we are headed to no name creek our hope is for some BWOs to hatch and the fish to notice. 8 Quote
SteveM Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 You posted the same pic of a brown trout in day 2 & day 3 reports. I'm beginning to suspect you're making this whole thing up. 1 Quote

Guest bigdirty Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 That rainbow looks like the type you describe in pounds, sweet! Quote
monger Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Great fish Jared. Makes the drive worth it. The canyon section is a cool place. I remember the wading being a bit tricky through there. Locals like using girdle bugs for stones there. Quote
Muffin Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Wow that Rainbow is a beast, the first picture doesn't quiet do it justice but you really get a great appreciation for the size in the second picture. Looks like a pretty awesome trip, thanks for sharing. 1 Quote
