Xplorer Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Hi Guys, I have been fishing streamers for a bit now and I was thinking about getting a rod that may be better suited to tossing larger streamers. I have been using a 10' Amundsen Wind Warrier 6wt but it feels a little slow/soft. Maybe I need to move up to a 7 or 8 wt with a faster action. I will be using sink tip and full sink lines. I will be using it on the bow and for bulls in the mountains, I have a budget of about $700....maybe more if I can convince the wife I have been a good hubby. Thanks Quote
bcubed Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Personally I'd recommend a 9 foot 6 weight, fast like a Sage VXP or TCX (if you can bump that budget a bit). I've always felt that a 7 or 8 is too much stick for the vast majority of the AB trout 1 Quote
darrinhurst Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I use a 10'0" 7wt for streamers. Its a custom made Dan Craft blank done up by CDone on the board. Its a great rod for chucking streamers and hooking fishing partners (sorry again BBT). Has served me well. Quote
Jayhad Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 as with DHurst, I'm a fan of 7wt 10' for streamers... I use the Sage One Quote
vhawk12 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 What about the St. Croix Bank Robber designed by Kelly Galloup specifically for streamer fishing? I've never tried one, but I like Kelly Galloup, that must mean it's good...$399.99 at Wholesale, you could almost buy two....or a sweet reel and line to go with it! Quote
Flytyer Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 The show is this weekend, why not go and test some out? Testing a few in a relatively short period of time gives you fresh memory of whatever number you try out. Quote

I've always felt that a 7 or 8 is too much stick for the vast majority of the AB trout I agree. I find the Sage VXP to cast more like a 7wt. It is my streamers/hella-windy-day rod. It is a little small for pike though. Quote
Xplorer Posted January 25, 2013 Author Posted January 25, 2013 The show is this weekend, why not go and test some out? Testing a few in a relatively short period of time gives you fresh memory of whatever number you try out. This is kind of what I was thinking, I just wanted to get some ideas on what to try before I was there and distracted by everything shiney and new. If anyone has anymore suggestions, fire away. Thanks guys Quote
SilverDoctor Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Somthing to remeber is we all will have different needs when casting a rod. A lot of personal preferance comes into play as far as weight and rod speed are concerned. Like Flytyer said the show is a great place to see what suites you. Quote
agbff Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Ever thought about getting a light spey or switch rod? Something in 5/6 11 foot range is what I find ideal...You can also get some extra distance in the lakes. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I very often use my Meiser 4 wt 12.5 ft Spey rod for streamers; I can cast and swing all day without getting tired. These old shoulders aren’t that keen on double hauling that much. Quote
jjthom2 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 as with DHurst, I'm a fan of 7wt 10' for streamers... I use the Sage One I second this - got to use this rod on a float last summer and it was the perfect streamer rod. The extra foot makes throwing big flies and mending much easier. Highly recommended.
