lonefisher Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 OK so does that mean that if we have nearly 1000 members and 2 or 3 are female then we can make a blanket statement that .2- .3 % of flyanglers are Female? How optimistic does that make you single guys feel? LOL By the by I have been around long enough for Bi-annual flowering plants to come 12 times to Bloom. Quote

How optimistic does that make you single guys feel? LOL from what i understand there are a few more than .3% maybe 5%, that being said, i almost never see another woman on the river. maybe they are just clique-y and all fish together. maybe they aren't that adventureous or social. personally i only know 2 other than myself and a few others who want to try it. but the ones i do know ARE single. if that helps at all i have also heard that there is a group for women only and has something to with breast cancer, stroke or something to that effect. i read an article about it a few years ago. women learing to fly fish and teaching other women who have had breast cancer as a way of rehab and exercise etc. i'm ok with being a minority Quote

Back in my younger days when I didn't have much of a life otherwise, I ran both of them for a few years. The WFFAA (Women's Fly Fishing Assoc. of Alberta) was alot of fun - we had 50 members in Alberta - mostly Calgary but a few from up north and down south. It eventually dissolved due to lack of interest and a bunch of other things. The other group you're speaking of is Casting For Life - a retreat for breast cancer survivors. You can read more at castingforlife.com. Even though I'm no longer involved with it and it's completely changed hands from the original founders/directors, I still have a spot in my heart for it as I believe it to be a great cause. I'm glad they've found others to carry the torch and organize the main retreat each year. And even more grateful that the sponsorship continues because, by far, that was the hardest part of my job when I did it and probably still is. Oh ya....I'm not cliquey, I'm quite adventurous and I'm very social. However, I"m not single and that's probably why you won't find me on the river alone - I fish exclusively with my husband and my golden retriever. And I wouldn't trade it in for anything But on a board like this....being a single fly fisher chick would sure have its advantages. I'll leave it to you to find them Quote

Brownee Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Hopefully this will help bump up the women flyfishin stats a bit. Including myself I know 3 women who are not clickey, are adventureous, very social and love to flyfish. Now for the bad part the other two aren't single Quote
ladystrange Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 thanks Lynn, that is the outfit i was thinking of and it must have been on tv, you know, one of those lazy winter sunday mornings and the only thing to do is watch fishing shows... it was one of those days and it was a commerical or an interview, i dont remember which, but i remember thinking what a great idea it was to have an organization like that. by the sounds of it we are up to .6% be careful guys, we are going to take over... really slowly. providing, husbands, children, work, school functions, inlaws, pets, laundry, work functions, groceries, other house work and paying the bills doesnt get in the way. dryfly Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 George Carlin's Views on Aging Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. "How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key. You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. "How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!! But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED ; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone . But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would! So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT ! You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backward; "I Was JUST 92." Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!" May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!! HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them." 2. Keep only cheerful friends . The grouches pull you down. 3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer , crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's. 4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, long and loud . Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive. 7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music , plants, hobbies , whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it . If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9 Don't take guilt trips . Take a trip to the mall , even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. 10.Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Quote
SteveM Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Amen, Brother Carlin! There's a whole lotta wisdom in George's comedy. His tips on "How to stay young" & the last line about " moments that take your breath away" are absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting 'em, Clive! Quote

I thought the part about "Tears happen" was especially good. Hard to face the tough times that you know are inevitable, but you have to face them nonetheless. Quote
